ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

A NOTE OF THANKS . . .

On behalf of the The Undies Project a big thank you to St. Catherine of Siena for participating in Undie Sunday 2018 and for all the hard work of Betsy Parker again this year. Your congregation generously donated 480 items. We have begun to distribute these items through 16 local area organizations that we partner with who hel those in need.

The Undies Project is a non profit organization dedicated to serving low income men, women and children by providing them with new underwear to improve their lives.

With your help, to date The Undies Project has distributed over 106,000 undergarments to those less fortunate. We rely on the generosity of the community to help us achieve our mssion and we are truly grateful for your support. We look forward to St. Catherine of Siena participating in Undie Sunday next year.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN Most organizations that work with children have some sort of child safety program. Through the Protecting God’s Children program, efforts are made to help Churches and religious organizations refine their roles as child-safe environments and empower adults to protect children by making them more aware of the ways children and adults interact with each other. The Protecting God's Children program educates and trains adults (clergy, teachers, staff, volunteers, parents) about the dangers and warning signs of abuse, the ways to prevent abuse, the methods of properly reporting suspicions of, and responding to allegations of abuse. It reminds adults that to protect children you must have continuous awareness and vigilance.

ATTENTION CARNIVAL VOLUNTEERS!

All volunteers must attend one VIRTUS session. The last session here before the Carnival is:

PLEASE CONSIDER BECOMING A CATECHIST! Jesus called people to action and asked people to commit, to decide

and "come follow me." Teach the Lord’s Word to our children. The Lord will stand with you and show you the way.

HELP CHILDREN LOVE CONFESSION

All children need reassurance that they are loved even when they make mistakes. That’s why Jesus created the Sacrament of Reconciliation. He wanted to give us an outward sign of his unconditional love and forgiveness. Try these tips to help children appreciate God’s special, forgiving love:

Who, Me?! Children often think of sin as relative. “It was okay to hit her because she hit me first.” “I took his pen because he took my glove.” Children need to know that God’s rules are the ones to follow. Use the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes as guides.

Say you’re sorry. Even young children can understand the need to say they’re sorry when they do something wrong. That’s the first step toward taking responsibility for our actions and changing our behavior.

Change. Avoiding future sin means deciding to change. The priest may have suggestions, but you can also help your child figure out how to keep from “messing up” in the future.

Remember – forgiving sin is what God loves to do most.

“To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable

can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth.”

Gospel Summary – MK 4:26-34 The fourth chapter of Mark’s Gospel focuses entirely on parables. In the first part of the Gospel, Seed Grows of Itself, Jesus is pointing out that the growth of the Kingdom of God is a hidden reality that operates under God’s power rather than through human work and effort. In the second part of the Gospel, the parable of the Mustard Seed, Jesus is offering the crowds words of encouragement. What at first might seem small and insignificant will, under God’s power, become “the largest of plants.”

Reflection for Parents In the parables, or simple stories that Jesus told, he used everyday objects such as salt, light, coins, yeast, and even a father and his sons to teach moral lessons. Jesus wanted people to relate to the stories he told, and to understand his teachings about the ways in which children of God are called to live. Children of all ages love to hear good stories, especially those they can relate to because the situations, settings, characters, or objects are familiar to them. How long has it been since you’ve shared a good story with your children? What books are on your family bookshelf? Be mindful of making story and reading choices that reflect and reinforce the kingdom values that Jesus taught.

Bringing the Good News Into Your Family Place a small, empty bowl and a container of various kinds of seeds on your family prayer table or kitchen table. Remind your family that every person can plant seeds of goodness, kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity, thankfulness, and love in the lives of family members, friends, and those in need in the world today. Share ideas about ways to do this. Invite family members to put one seed in the glass bowl for every seed of God’s love they plant in the coming week. At the end of the week, reread the parable of the Mustard Seed and—if possible—plant your seeds and be surprised by what grows!

Discussion Starters 1. Someone who planted the seed of love in my life this past week

is . . . 2. One seed I want to plant this week is . . . 3. One way our family can help the Kingdom of God grow is . . .

If you have any thoughts or questions about today’s Gospel, about your faith, or simply to let me know you’re reading these discussions, please email me at [email protected]. I’d love to hear from you.
