Sunday Programs - 9:45 am - 10:45 am

Childcare services are available at the POP Nursery during Sunday morning programs. Resurrection and the Afterlife in the New Testament St. Monica Room Central to our Christian faith is a belief in the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Dr. Candida Moss, noted Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of Notre Dame, helps us understand the significance of that belief. On January 10, we will discuss The Heavenly Treasury and on January 17, we will discuss Revelation 1: The Blood of the Martyrs. Facilitated by Sonya Phillips and Mike Brown.

Scripture in “Action” St. Elizabeth Room

Weekly gatherings discuss the current week’s readings and how the words of Scripture speak to us. Help share in gaining a better understanding of God’s message in Scripture as we discuss the Sunday readings, how they relate to us today, and seek ways to apply God’s message in our daily lives. Led by Tom & Elsbeth Germanson.

Religious Education: “Appearance vs the Authentic” Our own age seems to be governed by illusion and deception. We have built a whole culture based on appearance. Everything looks

good, but scratch just below the surface, and you will discover little substance. Appearance has become a standard. We have grown so numb to

the realities of good and evil that lying and cheating have become almost universally accepted as necessary evils. So we tolerate them, as long as

they are performed in the dim light of respectability. Occasionally, in the midst of this cultural darkness, the great light of the human spirit

shines forth with honesty and integrity. At those times we seem surprised, even taken off guard. Honesty, loyalty, and integrity seem almost

out of place in the modern scheme.

But beneath the surface, under the guise of appearances, this age, like any other, is made up of people that are hungry. We were

created to love and be loved, and there is a restlessness, a longing for more, a profound discontent with our lives and with our culture. We sense

that something is missing, and deep within we know that nothing we can buy and no worldly pleasure will satisfy our restlessness (Rediscover Catholicism, Matthew Kelly).

As we begin this New Year together, we can become restless with our lives, both personally and professionally, and can find ourselves

searching for meaning and understanding. This can be an incredible time to strengthen your relationship with God and your family. Take a few

moments to pray together, give glory to God for the blessings you have, and seek comfort in the Holy Spirit for continued guidance and

direction. Happy New Year to you and your family!

Sunday School classes resume this weekend. Please keep the children, their families and teachers in your prayers as they continue the

Faith Formation of our parish children.

Stewardship: Parishioners Answering God’s Call

During the season of Advent and Christmas, we were blessed in our parish to see Stewardship at work in so many

areas. It is especially rewarding to hear about our youth and their efforts. The Middle School Youth Group asked to do

the Bread and Roses Ministry in December. They bagged and distributed care packages with toiletries and candy from

parish donations. Their parents volunteered to help with the cooking, and the youth served the meal to those less

fortunate. A Christmas blessing!

Please submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected].

They may be edited for space consideration.

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19: 23-24) Interfaith Joy of the Season

Considering how much of the news involves astonishing bigotry against Muslims – including among

politicians who by virtue of stated pro-life beliefs really ought to know better than to use dehumanizing and

“eradication” terminology – we cover … Muslim groups working toward nonviolence. Pro-life Muslims, who

explain opposition to both abortion and euthanasia, quote from Qur’an 5:32: “whosoever saves a life, it is as if he

had saved the life of all mankind.” A similar thought is found in the Jewish Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:9. The idea

covers the entire consistent life ethic well. (Consistent Life, issue #291 12.18.15)

your fellow parishioners every week? Would you like to help Prince of Peace Catholic Church in a unique way? If so, why not

advertise in the Prince of Peace weekly bulletin? Prince of Peace has partnered with Liturgical Publications to start printing

our weekly bulletin. The new bulletin will go into effect February 14th, and our bulletin needs ads! The ads and

sponsorships on the bulletin will allow for us to receive a bulletin at no cost to the church. Jenny Lusk from our new bulletin

publishing partner, Liturgical Publications, will be in the parish office the weeks of January 11th and 18th working on

converting current advertisers and securing new ads for the bulletin. For more information or to make an appointment,

As Christian adults, we have a moral and legal responsibility and are entrusted by God with the spiritual, emotional and physical well-being of minors and vulnerable adults. As they participate in activities within or sponsored by our diocese, it is our commitment to provide an environment which is safe and nurturing. In accordance with the Diocese of Birmingham it is policy to offer continued Youth Protection Training to all employees and volunteers who have routine contact with children or vulnerable adults. All employees and volunteers MUST BE TRAINED. You have 2 options to take the classes.

Pope To Vatican Employees: Take Care of Your Marriage, Grandparents

By Carol Glatz

Catholic News Service

Vatican City- Take care of your marriage and aging

parents, play with your kids, and always make

peace at the end of the day, Pope Francis told

Vatican employees and their families.

Try to live out the Year of Mercy every day

in the hopes that everyone can “experience the joy

of mercy, beginning with your families,” he said

during a special audience in the Vatican’s Paul VI

hall Dec. 21.

But the most important think he wanted to

tell them, he said, is to take care of their marriage

and never take it for granted. A marriage “is like a

plant. It’s not like a cabinet that you put over there,

in a room, and dust it every now and then. It’s a

living plant, it has to be taken care of every day,” he said.

In fact, the best gift parents can give their children is to show the kids how much

they love and care for each other, he said. Parents should also focus more on doing things

together with the kids and worry less about material things, he said.

“Talk to your kids, listen to them, ask them what they think” and play with them.

“Dialogue between parents and children is very healthy,” he added.

The pope also said to make sure the children get to live or spend time with their

grandparents. “Let’s take care of grandparents. Grandparents are so important for

families,” especially because of the memories they hold from the past and the wisdom they

possess. “Don’t set them aside,” he said.

Finally, he asked everyone always to make sure that any fights or arguments

during the day ended in peace before bedtime. Couples have to make sure they have made

peace and parents need to make sure the kids have made peace with a handshake or kiss.

“It’s necessary to learn this wisdom of making peace” right away and not let it

linger, he said. “Have you waged war during the day? Is this war still smoldering? Don’t let

it become cold because a ‘cold war’ the day after is more dangerous than a ‘hot war.’ Got it?

Always make peace at night,” he said.
