PASTOR’S CORNER

WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED

Question:In our church, on the feast of Epiphany, we write the initials C+M+B over the doorway, what does this stand for or mean?

Answer:Epiphany, like Christmas, is celebrated in various ways by different nationalities and cultures. The customs and traditions surrounding these days give them a distinct feel and meaning.

In many Slavic traditions, Epiphany is observed by marking the year on the mantle of the entrance to a room or house. In the center of the year are the initials of the traditional names of the three Wise Men: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. An alternative explanation asserts that the initials stand for the Latin “Christus Mansionem Benedicat,” “Christ bless this house.” Regardless of the interpretation, the purpose is to ask God’s blessing on the home, marking it as though the Wise Men had come and found therein the Christ Child. It also recalls the marking of the doorways in Egypt with the blood of the lamb so that the angel of death would pass over. God’s blessing comes to each home as a source of protection and grace.

Financial StewardshipToday we remember the three wise men from the East who came to pay homage to the infant Jesus, bringing him rich gifts of gold, frankincense and

myrrh. The gifts we bring - our time and service and some share of what we earn for the work we do - are

equally precious in His sight.

All are welcome to attend this trialogue on Muslim, Jewish, and Christian interpretations of Scripture, as embraced initially in the Catholic Church’s Vatican Council II document, Nostra Aetate. The panelists include Dr. Sameh Asal of BIS Hoover Crescent Islamic Center, Rev. Ray Dunmyer of St. Thomas Catholic Church, and Rabbi Johnathan Miller of Temple Emanu-El. The panel discussion will be moderated by Sr. Mary McGehee, OSB, retreat and spiritual director at the Benedictine Sisters Retreat Center in Cullman. Please RSVP to [email protected] to reserve your seat for this enlightening evening.

Stewardship: Parishioners Answering God’s Call in ServiceA group of young mothers from Prince of Peace recently visited Her Choice Birmingham Women’s Center for a tour and to

learn about service opportunities there. They didn’t go empty-handed, however. They took newborn items for donation to the new moms serviced by the Center. The moms who couldn’t make the trip worked on a knitting project to make pom poms for

infant hats and congratulations cards to be given to the new moms through Her Choice. Please submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected]. They may be edited for space consideration.

Centering PrayerSave the date for January 21 as Sr. Mary McGehee will present an Introductory Workshop on Centering Prayer at Prince of Peace. More details to come.

Centering Prayer is a way to deepen your prayer life by learning to “rest in God.” It helps you find Christ’s presence within the “stillness of our being” leading us beyond concepts, words and images. Centering Prayer is a simple and disciplined waiting, lovingly on God.

To learn Centering Prayer, please be prepared to attend for six weeks. There will be an Introductory Workshop (led by Sr. McGehee), which is usually given in a one-day or weekend retreat, then weekly sessions for six weeks.

The Introductory Workshop teaches this method of prayer by lectures, discussion, and practice. The day creates a beautiful atmosphere of silent listening from the heart. The following sessions include praying Centering Prayer as a group, reading from the book, Open Mind Open Heart, or watching a short video of Fr. Thomas Keating and having discussions. The weekly sessions usually last 1.5 - 2 hours each.

We hope you can join us for this introspective prayer journey on January 21.

Covenant of LoveYou’re Invited! Covenant of Love Date Night is a marriage ministry that allows couples to reconnect and refocus on what’s important, as well as impart practical wisdom to become the husband and wife God desires them to be. The next Date Night is:

Religious EducationIs Religious Education a Substitute for Regular Mass Attendance?

Reflections taken from Aleteia Newsletter - A Catechist’s Perspective Part 1 of 3

It was the first day of my first year teaching second grade religion and we were going to learn about parts of the Mass. “OK,” I began. “Think about the last time you went to Mass. What was the first thing that happened?”

A hand shot up. “We opened our presents!”

I shook my head. “No, I’m thinking of something that happens every time you go to Mass...”

A small voice piped, “We found our Easter Baskets?” I shook my head again.

“Aunt Mary died? My mom got married? My baby brother got baptized?” Each child helpfully volunteered their memories of the times they remembered going to Mass.

Finally, another student sighed and raised his hand. I knew him. We sat behind his family every week. “First we all stand and sing a song while Father comes in. Then he starts with a prayer.”

When I’m with my religion classes, I can tell which kids have been going to Mass since birth and which kids only go on special occasions. For the kids who go weekly, I’m basically reminding them of things they already know. The kids who haven’t gone to Mass are a different story. They’ve missed out on years of prayers, readings, hymns and liturgies. They haven’t experienced the liturgical year. Everything they’re learning is totally new for them, which means that it’s too much to learn in an hour a week. They don’t need the worst catechist in the parish. They need more time with Jesus. Over the next 2 weeks we’ll learn three reasons why Mass is the best way to ground your children in the faith. (Aleteia Org)

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-4)Let Us Give Thanks - About Death Penalty

For the first time in over 40 years, public support in the United States for the death penalty has gone under half, so is no longer a majority opinion. The number of executions and death sentences is also lower than it’s been in decades.

International actions against the death penalty are still vigorous. (Consistent Life Web Page, issue #338 11.25.16)For more information on the Seamless Garment, please contact Tom & Elsbeth Germanson: 205.565.3456, [email protected].

- Agregando esperanza, fidelidad, generosidad y bondad.

¿Bautizaron a mi hermanito?”
