Continuing on from the firm foundations of Reception,

the areas of maths that will be taught are:

• Number place and value

• Addition and subtraction

• Multiplication and division

• Fractions

• Geometry

• Measure

YEAR 1

Page 3: MATHS AT ST MILDRED’S. Continuing on from the firm foundations of Reception, the areas of maths that will be taught are: Number place and value Addition

• Count reliably to at least 100

• Counting in 2s,5s and 10s

• Read and write numerals to 100 and words to 20

• Say the number that is one more or less than any given number, and ten more or less for multiples of ten.

• Use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20.

• Add and subtract 1 and 2 digit numbers to 20.

• Read, write and use the symbols +, -, =

• Recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes.

Some of the main things your children will be learning to do this year are...

A very important part of the curriculum is that we use practical equipment as much as possible.

Children in Year 2 will continue and complete the curriculum that they began in Year 1.

The areas taught are the same as in Year 1 but with the addition of Statistics.

YEAR 2

Page 6: MATHS AT ST MILDRED’S. Continuing on from the firm foundations of Reception, the areas of maths that will be taught are: Number place and value Addition

As well as reviewing skills learnt in year 1 some of the main things your children will be learning to do this year are...

• Understanding the value of each digit in a 2 digit number. Using Tens and Ones. So 23 = 20 +3 23 = 10 + 13

• Counting in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward.

• Comparing and ordering numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs.

• Adding and subtracting numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations and mental calculations.

• Beginning to use other multiplication tables and recall multiplication facts for 2, 10 and 5 multiplication tables.

• Recognising, finding, naming and writing the fractions one third, ¼ 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, a shape, a set of objects or quantity.

Using practical equipment is still extremely important.

The new curriculum also emphasises the use of

mathematical vocabulary...

... and also the importance of using and applying the skills that the children are learning.

Solve simple problems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change.

Using reasoning to solve missing number problems for addition and subtraction
