Juli Vercuiel, saam met haar pa, Hein, en ma, Grizelda. Juli het 4 keer Akademiese Erekleure verwerf, 1 keer Kultuur Erekleure vir Debat en 2 keer Sport Erekleure vir Atletiek. Ons is saam met haar ouers trots op haar!

Dit is hoe Stellenberg water bespaarOns waterbesparingsaksies:

• Water-meter reading twice a day (07:00 and 16:00).

• Sport fields: Use of borehole water by means of a programmed irrigation system. This happens early in the morning on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

• Bathrooms: Only a single internal tap left operational per bathroom. Alle toiletbakke is met kleiner bakke vervang wat waterverbruik met 50% verminder. Boorgatwater word gebruik om toilette te spoel. Waar nodig word water aangekoop (33 sent per liter). Dispensers installed in all the bathrooms to provide hand sanitiser in the form of a spray/liquid.

• Lugversorgers: Lugversorgers se water word opgevang en hergebruik.

• Personeel en leerders: Personeel en leerders word aangemoedig om hul eie drinkwater skool toe te bring.

• Water storage: Five 5000-litre water storage tanks to store borehole water for toilets and six 1000-litre water storage tanks to store borehole water for sportfields have been acquired.

Die Fotografieklub het ‘n baie geslaagde eerste byeenkoms op 19 Februarie gehad. Die tema van die aand was:

“Action – fast shutter speed. Freezing the action.”

Daar was ‘n hele paar inskrywings vir die maandelikse kompetisie. Die wenners was:

Meet the new teachers

Nuwe Stellies onthaal

Die studenteraad hou elke jaar ‘n informele funksie vir alle nuwe Stellies van graad 9 tot 12 om hulle te ontmoet en meer van die skool te vertel. Ons moedig ook die nuwe Stellies aan om betrokke te wees by die verskeie aktiwiteite van die skool, aangesien dit die maklikste manier is om nuwe vriende te maak.

Elke nuwe Stellie is ook bederf met ‘n kolwyntjie en ‘n SteriStumpi-melkie. Ons hoop al die nuwe Stellies voel al tuis en het hul voete in die skool gevind.

On Monday, 15 January, the Grade 8s arrived at Stellenberg High where they were met by the student council. They were divided into groups and treated to an escorted tour of the school. The theme was introduced and so the “school of Jellyfish” floated into the Stellenberg ocean.

Die studenteraad het die graad 8’s Dinsdag vergesel na Eversdal Laerskool vir die swemgala. Die interhuis-dirigente het gees gebou met helfte van die graad 8’s terwyl die ander helfte geswem het. Nadat die swemgala afgehandel is, het al die Jellievisse in die swembad gespring en deelgeneem aan “water aerobics”.

The Grade 8s arrived at school in their Jellyfish outfits on Wednesday morning. Later that day they participated in athletics. They wore shirts representing their house colours – green, red and blue.

Die Jellievisse het Donderdag-en Vrydag- oggend op die B-rugbyveld aangemeld in hul uitrustings. Hulle het hul graad 8-liedjie, die skoollied en parade gedoen onder leiding van die Ontvangs-en-bekendstelling- koördineerders. Tydens pouses het die graad 8’s ontmoet met die skoolhoof, hul graadvoogde en sportonderwysers.

On Saturday the Jellies took part in a team building session lead by The Venture Group. The session was followed by the “Waatlemoenfees” where the Grade 8s finally had the opportunity to take vengeance on some of the “mean” SRC members.

The Grade 8s returned to school after revitalising themselves at home. They attended a praise and worship session with CROSS and the Stellenberg NG Kerk band, Plofstoff. Afterwards, the SRC members joined their groups for dinner. During the evening, the Grade 8s were introduced to the different SRC committees and were entertained with a few cultural performances. They also received “sokkie”-lessons and participated in a fashion show.

The Jellyfish commenced their Sunday morning by singing their Grade 8 song for the last time.

At the conclusion of a long and tiring week, the Grade 8s proved on all accounts that they definitely deserve a spot in the Stellenberg family.

Ansbach-Kassel-uitruilprogramAnsbach is a small town in Bavaria and the managament of the Thesiengymnasium wanted to include South Africa in their vast pool of exchange destinations. Tygerberg High School has been involved for 5 years and invited us to join the programme.

Slegs twee leerders van Stellenberg, Kirsten Mostert en Mignon Humphries, het hierdie jaar meegemaak aan die uitruil. Dit was ‘n reusesukses gemeet aan die tranedalafskeid en die Duitsers se behoefte om te bly.

Die program was vol met uitstappies na die stad, Houtbaai, Kaappunt, Boulders, die Waterfront en Robben Eiland, om net die hoogtepunte te noem. Na die Kaapstad-besoek, was hulle ook 3 nagte in die Kruger Wildtuin op safari.

Our pupils were true ambassadors for our country and the German people will be able to spread the news of good will, hospitality and a wonderful country.

In July the South African group will travel to Ansbach once more to learn more about German culture and to strengthen existing ties.

Elke jaar het leerders van die hoërskole Tygerberg, Stellenberg en DF Malan die geleentheid om deel te wees van die Kassel-Kapstadt-uitruil. Dit behels ‘n 3-weke-lange kulturele uitruil na van die beeldskoonste plekke in Duitsland.

This year Celeste Calitz, Nicola en Karla Hanekom, Jané Swart, Enja Keller, Christi Liebenberg en Amelia Kopper had the absolute pleasure of visiting the country at Christmas time, and it was truly a sight to behold.

Germany is a very festive country, and twinkling fairy lights and

large Christmas trees in city centres could be seen everywhere.

The shops (even clothing stores) sold Christmas-themed merchandise.

Elke gesin neem deel aan Advent, die aftelling van die laaste 4 weke, of 24 dae voor Kersfees, en sommiges hou selfs

smiddae familietyd deur Kersliedere te sing en, natuurlik, tuisgebakte Kersfeeskoekies met mekaar te deel. Alhoewel ons groep ongelukkig ‘n paar dae voor Kersfees moes terugkeer na Suid-Afrika, het ons definitief die ongelooflike ervaring van die Duitse Kerstyd beleef--kompleet met sneeu!

Van die hoogtepunte vanjaar het ingesluit ‘n drie-dae- lange uitstappie na Berlyn,’n besoek aan die destydse Checkpoint Charlie, die Grimm-broers se museum, en natuurlik al die wonderlike Kersmarkte wat in elke dorp was.

The exchange is primarily with Wilhelmsgymnasium in Kassel. This year we comprised a group of 25 students accompanied by Mrs Alta Loubser from D.F. Malan and Ms Rachelle Germishuys from Tygerberg. We attended school with our hosts every day and had to prepare a five-minute-long PowerPoint-presentation about a special aspect of South Africa, e.g. the food, history, languages, etc. Ons besoek het egter

die Duitse studente in die middel van ‘n toetsreeks gevang; dus het die Suid-Afrikaners tydens hierdie toetsessies óf in die kafeteria gesit en wag óf ‘n trem geneem na die dorp se Kersmark toe. Duitsers is ongelooflik onafhanklik en dit is vir hulle niks snaaks as jy ‘n hele middag lank spontaan die strate invaar nie. The main purpose of the exchange is to expose German and South African cultures to each other, and thus we were tasked with preparing traditional South African treats for the school. At first we thought it would be only the staff who would taste our wares, but as it turned out, the whole school wanted a bite!

This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime trip and I would recommend it to any student. Daar is geen spesifieke vereistes om te kan deelneem nie, maar ‘n deeglike kennis van Duits word sterk aanbeveel, aangesien dit die gesproke taal is. Once you have visited Germany, you won’t be the same person when you return. You will arrive home with a new perspective of yourself, and the world.

SOXThe fifth Stellenberg Outdoor Experience event transpired on 17 February.

Movie-goers were transported to a swamp far, far away where they joined Shrek, Fiona and Donkey in their adventures.

The aim of the event is to raise funds for the annual matric ball. The Grade 11 learners of the school volunteer at this event to earn points and have the opportunity to choose their arrival time for their matric ball the following year and/or to be able to invite a partner who is not a Stellie matric.

Gates opened at 18:00 so that eager patrons could claim seats in front of the screen.

It was a lovely warm and windless night under the stars.

While the crowd waited for the movie to start, they treated themselves to a variety of foods and drinks available from the many stalls at the event and lounged happily on their picnic blankets.

McStelliesStellenberg High School collaborated with McDonald’s Tyger Valley to host a McStellies event on Tuesday, 20 February. A percentage of the profit was donated to the school in an attempt to raise funds for the matric ball.

As with all other fundraising events for the matric ball, the current Grade 11 learners were responsible for the proceedings. These involved a DJ/entertainment host, counter cheer-squads, line organisers, distribution, decorations, welcoming committee, clearing crew and handing out flyers.

The one and only (on the continent of Africa) Ronald McDonald made a surprise appearance to support the Stellies. The Grade 11 learners, and guests, thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as can be seen in these photos.

Pudding Evening

The SRC’s communication committee held their annual pudding evening on the 6th of February.

The choice to have the event after MTBS practice proved to be a huge success as everyone was already at school and the puddings only cost R5 each.

It was a great way to create “GEES” before the actual MTBS event.

There was music and dancing, good food and fantastic people. We are looking forward to an even more exciting PUDDING EVENING in 2019.

Die graad 11’s het op Woensdag, 14 Februarie, ‘n graadbraai gehou en het mekaar beter leer ken.

Die aand het bestaan uit braaivleisvure, boereworsbroodjies, baie lag en gesels, musiek en ‘n gesellige atmosfeer. Marshmellows is gebraai en dié wat nie met twee linkervoete gebore is nie, het gedans.

Baie dankie aan elke Stellie wat daar was! Dit was ‘n heerlike aand en ons sien daarna uit om, as graadgroep, nog baie lekker dinge saam as graad te doen.

Ons jaarlikse uitnodigings-atletiekbyeenkoms was weer eens ‘n besonderse geleentheid waar atlete van 6 verskillende skole kom deelneem het by die Hoërskool Stellenberg ter voorbereiding van die 2018-atletiekseisoen.

Die deelnemende skole was HMS Bloemhof, HMS Rhenish, HS Bredasdorp, HS Drostdy, Paul Roos Gimnasium en HS Stellenberg, natuurlik!

Stellenberg kraai koning by MTBS!

MTBS-BraaiOn 5 February Stellenberg High School once again enjoyed the privilege of hosting the annual MTBS-Braai.

This event served as an opportunity for all the Student Council members and cheerleaders, from the respective MTBS schools, to let their competitive guard down and enjoy a night filled with banter, fun and dancing.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this night a success: Stellenberg Spar, Makro, the Stellenberg High School staff, as well as all the Student Council members and cheerleaders from the four schools.

As a Stellie family we would like to congratulate and extend our thanks to every athlete and pavilion member for making this year’s MTBS one to remember!

Baie geluk aan al die Stellies wat deelgeneem het aan die MTBS-byeenkoms op 7 en 8 Februarie. Stellenberg was hierdie jaar die gasheerskool en het boonop die atletiektrofee vir die sesde agtereenvolgende jaar gewen. Juli Vercuiel kry die trofee vir die beste prestasie in 3 items vir dogters. Sy het ‘n totaal van 2536 ASA-punte vir die 400m, 100m Hekkies en 400m Hekkies.

Big BragMet die MTBS-pawiljoen se tema “We are the world” het die Stellie-onnies saamgespan en ‘n olimpiese parade gehou.

Many teachers gathered, prior to the parade, to hold their very own athletics meeting – representing the countries of France, Spain, Japan, China, USA and of course, The Republic of Stellenberg.

Onder die dawerende klanke van “Barcelona!” het mnr. Maree tydens die parade die spanne in hul olimpiese klere en kleure dramaties verwelkom.

As always, the paparazzi (lead by Jacques Wüst) were lurking in the shadows behind the podium and recorded exclusive footage, which was revealed to the enthusiastic Stellie pavilion crowd and the brilliant athletes.

It was a Big Brag to remember and maybe, just maybe… it played a small part in the homecoming of the MTBS trophies.

ChessStellies Chess is growing from strength to strength and we look forward to an awesome year of both social and competitive results.

Here are some recent highlights:

SAJCC 2018 – Benoni Jan. 2018

Stellies was well represented at The South African Junior Chess Championships (SAJCC) earlier this year. The history of this tournament dates back more than 30 years and the tournament typically attracts more than 2,500 junior chess players and officials nationwide. The championship consists of a team event and a wild-card event. The team tournament features regional teams of between 6 and 10 players who compete in age categories ranging from U/8 to U/20. The wild-card tournament is an individual age-group event which serves as one of the key qualifying routes to the South Africa Junior Closed Chess Championships (SAJCCC).

Proud Stellie players who received WP Chess Provisional Colours included Luke Hay, Petrie de Wit, Stephan de Wit, Reece Frye, Dante Eaton, Emile Schnabel and Adele Schnabel.

SAJCCC – 2018

The South African Junior Closed Chess Championships (SAJCCC) is an annual event where the top 30 youth chess players in the country, per age and gender group, contest to earn the right to represent South Africa at Continental and International events for that calendar year.

The top 2 placed players per age and gender group automatically qualify for all Continental and International events.

Players who qualified for the South African Junior Closed Championships, that will take place in Johannesburg in April 2018 are: Reece Frye, Emile Schnabel and Dante Eaton.

A special shout out to Dante Eaton who achieved a 2nd place at the 2017 African Youth Chess Championships held in Giza, Egypt, in December 2017.

WP Schools’ Chess

Schools’ Chess is comprised, firstly of Team League matches which are contested from April onwards. Stellies will be entering a number of boys and girls’ teams.

Secondly, and of current interest, is the WP Schools Individual Chess Trials. Congratulations to Emile Schnabel, Luke Hay, Petrie and Stephan De Wit, Reece Frye and Dante Eaton with your selection to the District North teams.

Chess Parents Committee

This forum was recently formed with the aim of developing the Chess agenda. Congrats to Surina de Wit, our chairlady, Lize Schnabel and Rochelle Bock (Stellenberg H.S.). Craig Willenberg is re-appointed as chess coach. Chess practices and matches normally take place on a Friday afternoon and all interested learners are welcome.

We are all aware of the water situation. Many schools are prohibited from using their pools owing to water restrictions and as a result the A and B-League will unfortunately not take place this year. Western Cape Schools’ Swimming felt (with a very heavy heart and a clear mind) that due to the dire water shortages, it did not want to be seen as an ‘elite group’ who ignores the issues at hand and the possible problems we may encounter in the future.

Ons volgende, en heel moontlik ons laaste, gala van hierdie seisoen is die Aflosgala by die Hoër Jongenskool in die Paarl, op 22 Februarie 2018.

Westerford kolf eerste en teken 133 lopies aan. Stellenberg kon nie daarin slaag om hierdie telling aan te teken nie en verloor dus met 10 lopies. Dit was egter ‘n goeie dag vir ons boulers met uitstekende prestasies deur:

Westerford kolf eerste en teken 74 lopies aan. Stellenberg teken 78/1 aan binne 13.4 beurte tydens hul kolfbeurt en wen dus met 9 paaltjies. Stef Grobbelaar het die beste gevaar met die bal met boulsyfers van 3/9, terwyl Christiaan de Beer met 52 lopies uitgblink het. Geluk aan die spelers, afrigter en ouers met hierdie top prestasie!

Stellenberg U/14A vs. Westerford (35 overs) - 27/01/2018
