Project Description: This project will implement new Max-R centralized collection bins for landfill, mixed
paper, bottles and cans, and compost, in large student use buildings. The addition of the new units in highly
trafficked student buildings will help familiarize students with proper incentives to divert their wastes.
Goals
1. Provide students with more opportunities to recycle and compost on campus.
2. Encourage waste diversion by providing the proper standardized bin infrastructure with clear signage on
the centralized public collection bins.
3. Increase student awareness of the four different waste streams and proper recycling and composting
practices.
4. Increase the amount of overall campus waste diverted from the landfill, to help achieve the University’s
Zero Waste by 2020 goal.
Accomplishments
As of June 1, 2015 all 10 Max-R bins have been delivered and are preparing for installation.
Locations chosen to include: Dwinelle Hall, Pimentel, Cesar Chavez Student Center, Golden Bear Cafe,
Lower Sproul Plaza, and Evans Hall
As of July 1, 2015, both Cesar Chavez and Golden Bear Cafe have received their Max-R bins and so far
have proven to be successful at waste diversion.
