PACIFIC HEARTBEAT
Now in its sixth season, Pacific Heartbeat is an anthology series that provides viewers with a glimpse of the real Pacific— its people, culture and contemporary issues. From revealing exposés to in-depth profiles and unexpected histories, the series features a diverse array of programs that draw viewers into the heart, mind and soul of Pacific Island culture. The first film in the collection, "Ever the Land," explores the bond between the indigenous people and their land through a landmark architectural undertaking by one of New Zealand’s most passionately independent Maori tribes, Ngâi Tûhoe. For the past 150 years, the relationship between the Tûhoe Maori tribe and the New Zealand government has been defined by longstanding grievances over illegal land confiscations and the devastating consequences of scorched earth policies. The film captures a period of change and tremendous foresight: Tûhoe are negotiating an apology and settlement from the government, and constructing an architectural gem of a community center using radically sustainable methods. Tradition and environmentalism are brought together, and the film gives a stirring depiction of indigenous pride. The film "Mele Murals" examines the transformative power of art through the unlikely union of graffiti and ancient Hawaiian culture. At the center of this story are two graffiti artists and a group of Native Hawaiian youth from the rural community of Waimea, Hawaii. Together they create a mural that addresses the ill effects of environmental change and encroaching modernization on their native culture. The third program in the anthology series, "Visions in the Dark: The Life of Pinky Thompson," follows the dynamic career and life of Myron “Pinky” Thompson, who grew up in Hawaii during a time when one was punished for being Native Hawaiian. After almost losing his life in the battlefields of Normandy in World War II, Pinky brought his fierce energy to the arena of social service and led a new generation of Hawaiian leaders to represent the vibrant cultural identity and value system of the Hawaiian people. Rounding out the anthology series is the feature length documentary “Next Goal Wins”. The film profiles the journey that Dutch coach Thomas Rongen embarks on to attempt the nearly impossible task of turning the American Samoa soccer team from perennial losers into winners. With the power of hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, both coach and players learn an object lesson in what it really means to be a winner in life.
Airs Tuesdays at 8PM beginning May 16th
FREE TO ROCK
Ten years in the making, Free To Rock explores how American rock and roll
contributed to the end of the Cold War. In the eyes of the Soviet Ministry of
Culture, western rock music combined the twin evils of spreading the English
language and encouraging illicit free enterprise. It was prohibited by the
Soviet and Eastern Block authorities and deemed as propaganda. However,
the "soft power" of American rock music was pumped into Eastern Europe
and the USSR by Voice of America and Radio Free Europe. This forbidden
music inspired thousands of underground rock bands and tens of millions
of their passionate supporters. Their enthusiasm for rock and roll became a
youth movement that openly defied the Communist government. Narrated by
Kiefer Sutherland, the film features interviews with former President Jimmy
Carter; Mikhail Gorbachev, former president of the USSR; musicians Billy Joel
and Mike Love; Robert Santelli, Executive Director of the Grammy Museum;
Oleg Kalugin, a former major general in the Soviet KGB; Soviet rock artists
Stas Namin, Pete Anderson and Andrey Makarevich; and other scholars and
experts. Free To Rock also highlights performance footage from later cultural
exchange efforts from the late 60's to the early 90's, including The Beach
Boys, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and Metallica.

WEST OF THE WEST: TALES FROM CALIFORNIA'S CHANNEL ISLANDS
Introduced by Joe Walsh of the legendary band The Eagles, and told from the view point of the native people who’ve inhabited and experienced the Channel Islands, the three-part documentary series West Of The West: Tales From California's Channel Islands Explores the history, geography, archaeology and biology of the eight islands off the California coast. Through interviews with a range of experts – including academics, archeologists, historians and natives — West Of The West: Tales From California's Channel Islands provides an engaging portrait of each of the islands intimate personal history. Rather than painting a "linear history," the film presents nine major stories along with several shorter segments about the islands. Episodes include: "First People" "First People" contains five stories detailing the islands' human history. It includes the story of the Chumash tribe, the first people who lived on the Channel Islands from 13,000 years ago through the 1800s. It also recounts how the California coast was explored by the Spanish in 1542, long before the English arrived in Massachusetts; and how the Channel Islands were once located next to San Diego, but over the millennia, plate tectonics 'rotated' them to their current location off Santa Barbara. "Settlers" "Settlers" features four tales on how the Channel Islands were settled by people of European descent. One account includes Tim Vail, a fourth generation rancher on Santa Rosa Island who shares a personal history of his family’s involvement there while lamenting the end of their cattle operation after a century. Also chronicled are the maritime dangers posed by the Channel Islands and its waters holding the wrecks of more than 500 vessels. Catalina, the most widely known of the Channel Islands and the only one still privately owned, was developed by William Wrigley Jr., who purchased the island sight unseen in 1919. Its glory years of movie stars, the Chicago Cubs and big band dancing, as well as its struggles to stay relevant today are chronicled by Wrigley's great-grand-daugher Alison Rusack. "Return" The third episode, "Return," features four segments, one of which includes the struggle between environmentalists
and Channel Islands National Park and Nature Conservancy naturalists who endeavor to restore the islands to their native state. It also charts the relationship between Dr. Carey Stanton, who owned Santa Cruz Island, and musician Joe Walsh. They struck up an unusual bond that led to Walsh putting on an Eagle's concert to help raise money for the Nature Conservancy's purchase of Santa Cruz Island. Also included is an archeological discovery related to the "Lone Woman," the inspiration behind the Island of the Blue Dolphins and the Chumash tradition of annual timely voyages to their ancestral home on Santa Cruz Island.

PACIFIC HEARTBEAT
The film profiles the journey that Dutch coach Thomas Rongen embarks on to attempt the nearly impossible task of turning the American Samoa soccer team from perennial losers into winners. With the power of hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, both coach and players learn an object lesson in what it really means to be a winner in life.
