A Stewardship Moment In today’s Gospel Jesus talks about life with his Fa-ther and the Spirit. He tells his disciples that what belongs to the Father belongs to him, and that the Spirit will take from what is his and give it to them. Jesus helps us understand that the relationship be-tween Father, Son and Spirit is one of perfect sharing and loving generosity. This shared life is the founda-tion for what we now understand as part of living life in the Trinity. The abundant generosity of those who are good stewards of the gifts entrusted to them gives us a glimpse into the love of the Triune God. Does the generosity with which we live our lives bear wit-ness to God’s extraordinarily generous life within us?

From the Pastor’s Desk

Back when we were making preparations to begin the Centennial Campaign in our parish, I was rounding up a few volunteers to help with the process. The first person I spoke to said no, explaining, “I don’t do that. Asking people for money just makes them mad.” And that person was right. Some people get mad when you ask them to donate, to anything. And I’m sure there are any number of reasons why that is so. When I got my letter last fall, asking for a particular amount of my money, I have to admit I wasn’t thrilled either. Since then, a few things have changed.

That doesn’t mean I don’t still have concerns. I don’t want anyone to feel in any way bothered or har-assed. I don’t want anyone to feel guilty (or vain!) about the amount of their gift. And I would certainly prefer that no one get mad! But one turning point for me was a story I told when we kicked off our campaign several weeks ago. I realized that if, over fifty years ago, someone hadn’t asked for money, we wouldn’t have the back building at Immaculata Center, Vianney Hall, which has served our Catholic population in a variety of ways since then, and continues to serve us today. I realized that if, over fifty years ago during the last capital campaign, someone hadn’t asked for money, we wouldn’t have Consolata Nursing Home in New Iberia to provide for our infirm and retired priests. I also came to appreciate the value of committing 30% of the proceeds back to the par-ishes, and the wisdom of dedicating over 50% of the total proceeds to endowment funds, which will benefit our Catholic children and grandchildren, going far into the future.

So overall, I think the Centennial Campaign is good idea, even when I don’t like doing it. I regret that it happened when our oil economy is struggling, but oil prices can plummet at anytime, as we all know. If we had decided to wait for $100 oil to start the campaign, the next week, the bottom could have fallen out. Again.

Here’s my personal goal for our parish: I want to provide everyone with all the information you need to make your own decision about donating, or not. That’s why we are offering information every weekend about the 5 goals of the campaign. On the second weekend of June, when we ask you to commit to a pledge (if you have-n’t done so already), I want everyone to feel ready to make their own decision, for themselves. Only you know your financial situation. My job is to offer to you the opportunity to be a part of “Building Our Future Together”. If everyone has that opportunity, then I consider this a successful campaign, whatever the final numbers say.

So here’s the information. The decision is yours.
