Parish Membership Through baptism we become God’s sons and daughters, and brother and sisters of each other in Christ. Every family in the parish should be properly registered and each family should receive a set of envelopes. New parishioners should register at the Parish Office. Single adults over 21 years of age should register separately from parents. This registration is our only means of certifying anyone as a member of our parish family.

ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL This month, after years of study, 8 men are being ordained to the priesthood. During their years of preparation for this vocation, they were supported by family and friends – and by everyone who made a gift to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, you help meet the cost of priestly formation and education, since a portion of Appeal funds are used for this purpose. Please support our seminarians by making a gift to the Annual Appeal today.
A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE Like the vine grower in today’s gospel, parents must “prune and cleanse” the branches in their family if their children are going to be rooted. Discipline, limits and setting goals are a necessary part of parenting so our children will grow and “bear fruit.”
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
First Reading: Acts 9:26-31 Paul the Apostle came to Jerusalem, where the other disciples were afraid of him. Then they learned that the Lord had spoken to Paul and he had preached openly in Damascus. When they learned that someone wanted to kill him, they protected him because they fully believed he had converted. Second Reading: I John 3:18-24 John clearly states that we must love one another. All people who believe in Jesus Christ can show their faith only through their actions. If people believe in Jesus and love one another as he commanded us, they prove that they are true believers in Christ. Gospel: John 15:1-8 Jesus compares himself to a vine, and compares his father to the vine-grower. He explains how God prunes the barren branches so that the rest might yield more fruit. He reminds them that apart from himself, his followers could not bear fruit.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
MAY CROWNING All are invited to honor Mary on Sunday, May 13. We will
process outside immediately following the 10:30 am Mass, where the children will place a wreath on the statue of Mary. Our second graders are invited to wear their First Communion outfits to this special event.
HONORING OUR VETERANS Come join us on Saturday, May 26 from 9:00 to 10:00 am for placement of flags on the graves of veterans at Fairview Cemetery followed by a brief program and refreshments in our Parish Center. Guest speakers will be Chris Conlin, Vice Commander of the American Legion Post 96. Dr. Robert Hopko, music
teacher at Sedgwick Middle School will provide music. Please join us in honoring our Veterans this Memorial weekend.

“Following up on last week’s visit by Sister Pat McKeon of Mercy Housing & Shelter Corporation in Hartford, members of the parish are encouraged to volunteer any time or talent to support the good work of this organization and help to end homelessness. Sister Pat also reports that some members of the parish asked if they could tour some of Mercy’s facilities. If you are interested in participating in any way and/or in participating in a tour of St. Elizabeth’s House in Hartford, email Brian Rich at [email protected] or visit http://www.mercyhousingct.org or call the parish office. BOTTLES FOR BABIES The St. Peter Claver Knights of Columbus will be conducting their annual, award winning, Bottles for Babies drive beginning May 12, 2012. The Bottles for Babies drive benefits St. Agnes Home, Inc., which is one of two homes in the State of Connecticut that provide for pregnant teenage women who don’t have shelter and support. St. Agnes Home has been fulfilling this role for nearly 100 years. We will begin handing out our Bottles following masses on the weekends of May 12 and May 19. We will collect the bottles on the weekends of October 27 and November 3. These Bottles are receptacles for you to place your loose change in during this period. Your change will make a significant change in the lives of these young women and their babies. This is our opportunity to support the choices these young women have made. Thank you for supporting our efforts.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER In today’s Gospel, Jesus says that God is glorified when a disciple, grafted in Christ, produces abundantly and bears much fruit The disciple must then be a good steward of that abundance.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY The next Children’s Liturgy of the Word will be held on Sunday, May 13
th at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Children ages
4-12 will be led to the Parish Center where they are welcome to participate in an age appropriate interpretation of the Scripture Readings and Homily. They are then escorted back to their parents to continue celebrating the remainder of the Mass.
BAPTISMAL CATECHESIS PROGRAM
The next presentation of the Baptismal Catechesis Program will be held on Sunday, May 20 at 11:30 am in the Parish Center. Parents anticipating the Baptism of a child at St. Peter Claver during the months of June and July should call the Rectory Office at 860-561-4235 to sign-up for the workshop. Godparents are also encouraged to participate. Parents must be registered and active members of St. Peter Claver Parish and regularly attending Sunday Mass in order to have their child baptized in our parish. The selection of godparents should be done with careful thought.
We welcome into our Parish Family in the Saving Waters of Baptism Luke Thomas Burke, son of Shawn & Leah Burke who will be baptized this weekend. We congratulate his family and give thanks that our extended parish family is growing. As a parish family we pray that he will grow into the faith into which he has been baptized.
PASTORAL COUNCIL NOMINATIONS Once again our Pastoral Council is seeking individuals who are interested in serving. The Council meets monthly from September through June with members serving a 3 year term. For the next few weeks names of nominees may be placed in the box at the back of the church or forwarded to Peg Gould [email protected] or Gigi Frailey in the parish office [email protected] 860-561-4235, Opt 3. Please consider serving on the Council and help to create the future of our parish and our church. If you plan to nominate someone other than yourself, please confirm that this person is willing to serve.

What is Automated Giving? An alternate means of support for St. Peter Claver instead of envelopes. In lieu of weekly collections, the ParishPay program will collect monthly contributions from your checking, saving, or credit card account. There is NO cost to participate in the program.
What are the benefits to me? Allows you to plan your giving, in the same way you budget
your other financial commitments. You no longer have to be concerned about catching-up
missed offertory donations when you miss a Mass because you are out of town, on vacation, ill, etc.
You can easily adjust the amount of your automated contribution (up or down) through the Rectory or do it yourself via a secure website access.
You no longer need to write a check every week.
How does it relate to the use of the weekly envelopes? If you choose to participate in the Automated Giving Program, this will replace your weekly envelopes.
I feel uncomfortable not having something to physically drop into the collection basket. What should I do?
Special donation slips are available for those enrolled in the automated giving program to be dropped into the collection basket, should you wish.
What about Special Collections? You can specify your giving level for Special Collections and special celebration dates (e.g., Christmas, Easter) when you join the Automated Giving Program, or anytime thereafter.
How do I sign up? You can sign up by going to www.parishpay.com, by filling out an enrollment form that can be found in the back of the church and returning it in an envelope to the Rectory Office or by calling the Rectory Office at (860) 561-4235).

MANY THANKS FOR A BEAUTIFUL HEALING MASS AND SENIOR LUNCHEON
Thank you to everyone who helped to make our spring Senior Luncheon and Healing Mass a beautiful
experience for all. Thanks to Fr Leary, Tom Krug, Gigi Frailey, and Tom Triputti for presiding, serving,
and lectoring at Mass. Thank you to our St Peter Claver youth group for creating beautiful prayer cards
for each of our seniors. Thanks also to: Debbie Walgren, Joanne Therrien, Mary Halloran, Kim Green,
Eileen Thibadeau, Susan Keller, Gigi Frailey and Fr. Leary for setting up, serving lunch, and cleaning
up. Over eighty of our seniors enjoyed delicious Chicken Parmesan with Pasta, and Caesar Salad, topped
off with a delicious chocolate and vanilla cake! We are most grateful for the shared Mass and fellowship!

A REFLECTION ON HOLY WEEK AND THE EASTER VIGIL
Once again during Holy Week and Easter I was pointedly reminded of the amazing gift of the Holy Spirit
always with us. It is truly a privilege to journey with our RCIA candidates throughout the year and then
to experience Holy Week and the Easter Vigil with them. Having discussed the reasons behind the
movements in our liturgical celebrations, the RCIA team and candidates were well aware of the Paschal
moon which, during ancient times, was used to set the date for the celebration of the Jewish Passover and
today is used to set the date for the Christian celebration of Easter. The moon was particularly full and
bright on this Holy Thursday evening, adding to the sense of awe and wonder already present in this
most beautiful celebration of the Lord’s Supper. Twenty five parishioners of all ages participated in the
Holy Thursday service by carrying the sacred oils, dressing the Altar in preparation of our celebration,
and having their feet washed, making this a truly communal celebration. As always, the choir sang
beautifully: At the Table of the Lord “Precious body, precious blood, here in bread and wine: here the Lord
prepares the feast divine…. Bread of Love is broken now, cup of life is poured: come, share the supper of the
Lord.” On Good Friday our candidates were deeply touched as they watched every single person take
time to individually venerate the cross. The Spirit was flowing in ways that are beyond our knowing. On
Saturday evening we began outside with the blessing of the fire where everyone waited to see and hear
the “Light of Christ” be lit, held high, and passed to the community. Feelings of excitement and great joy
began to stir. The chaos which develops when everyone moves back to their seats in the dark was slowly
replaced by a sense of peace and great joy as the lights got brighter and the Exultet was sung followed by
the stories of our salvation history. The story of Jesus’ resurrection was told once more. He is not here,
among the dead. He has been raised by God! After we renewed our baptismal promises, our four
candidates professed their faith and were received into full communion with the Catholic Church. They
were anointed with the holy chrism and hugs and tears and congratulations were shared. We then
gathered around the table once more and prayed together as members of the priesthood of Christ. Our
candidates processed with us and received the Lord’s body and blood for the first time. We were sent
forth as the living body of Christ for the life of the world. Alleluia! Many community members stopped to
congratulate our newest Catholics and an overwhelming sense of joy that accompanies God’s amazing
grace permeated the group. The Spirit is surely with us!!!
