Farewell Carolyn and Kathryn from Canteen Bondi

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the departure of Carolyn and Kathryn from our school canteen. It has been an absolute honour and privilege meeting and working with these two outstanding operators over the last six months. As many of you will attest, they are leaving a legacy at Bondi Public School because of their significant contribution to creating healthy habits within our school community over the last decade.

Canteen Bondi began when our school was quite small. It serviced around 70 students 5 days a week and was run by a couple of parents working part time. It was set up not only to nourish through food, but to nurture students. Over the years we have grown as a school cohort and this has resulted in a massive growth in demand for the canteen’s services. Fast forward to today with over 500 students, we now employ 5 staff members including 2 full time and 3 casuals. We serve up well over 1000 orders (about 2000 items) per week and not a packaged or processed product in sight. Our fridges are packed with fresh produce, not flavoured milk. Many students and staff order daily, some have it as a weekly treat and others use it when the cupboard is bare. We make everything from scratch including favourites like Nanna Wendy’s Garlic Bread with our secret garlic butter recipe, and our Mexican Dip Cups fly out the door because our house made guacamole is totally delicious. The Surf’s Up Snack Boxes offer all the food groups and the Black Bean Brownies are a delicious sweet treat made sugar-free with nutritious black beans. The only items we bring into the canteen are those on our sushi menu, which is made fresh to order for us on Monday and Friday by the fabulous people at Sushi Junction. If you are at Westfield, please support them (they are situated outside Harris Farm). Tin Pin Bakery on Bondi Road supply our organic bread, baguettes (for the garlic bread), rolls, gluten-free bread, eggs and flour. Lucas Meats in Bronte supply all things carnivore, and Harris Farm are our choice for fresh produce. We run a nut-free service and offer choices for all kinds of dietary requirements and preferences including vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free (including catering for the several coeliac students who have and continue to attend BPS) and FODMAP as well as offering food that reflects the fact both students and staff buy from us, and therefore we place as much importance on providing a range of more sophisticated meals as we do on nutrition, presentation and enjoyment. You are sure to find something you like. Befitting our school’s commitment to sustainability, we use Biopak for packaging, we recycle and reuse as much as we can and we have very little wastage, making use of as much of every piece of produce as we can.

New opportunity for a Canteen Manager Bondi Public School and its parents are extremely proud of the canteen and the hard work that has been put into it over the years, to create a nutritious menu with most food made from scratch that is much loved by the school community. We are looking for someone to take the helm and continue to grow the canteen in conjunction with the P&C and the school community. https://www.seek.com.au/job/52183790.

We wish Carolyn and Kathryn all the very best in their future endeavours and we are filled with gratitude for their dedication and service to the Bondi Public School community.

KINDERGARTEN AND NEW ENROLMENTS 2022

Do you have a child turning five years of age before 31 July 2022 who will be ready to start school next year? We are busy at the moment enrolling students from our local intake area for 2022.

School Tours: Our school tours take place on a fortnightly basis during Terms 2 and 3. They provide an excellent opportunity for prospective parents and students to observe our school in action. Bookings can be made through the school office.

Enrolment: Our enrolment officer can be contacted on 02 9130 6998 and will be happy to assist with any enquiries regarding your child’s enrolment.

Our new online enrolment process makes it easier and faster to enrol your child at your local school.https://bondi-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/enrolment.html

As outlined in the department’s enrolment policy, our school may accept enrolments from outside our local enrolment area if places are available. We will assess applications for non-local enrolment on a case-by-case basis. We will be holding a Parent Information Evening on Wednesday 18th August at 7pm. The purpose of this meeting will be to outline the transition process and provide information to families regarding the start of the school year for Kindergarten 2022.

Transition programs: Starting school is a big milestone for children and their families. The transition between learning environments can be both challenging and exciting. We have three dates for children and their families to attend our Transition Program. 13 October, 20 October and 27 October. Further information will be emailed to confirmed enrolments.

We are looking forward to welcoming new children and families to our school.

With my very best wishes,

Natalia Greguric

Deputy’s Delivery Stage Three News

As part of Stage 3’s Persuasive Writing Unit in Term 1, students wrote a letter to Waverley Council trying to convince them to redevelop a site of choice in Bondi, in response to the needs of the local community.

The students were fantastic and wrote amazing letters with lots of different ideas that would improve Bondi for all. The letters were so wonderful, that 5/6R got in touch with the Community Development Officer (Nicole Fairley) at the council and sent the letters off to be viewed. Ms. Fairley shared Stage 3’s letters with the mayor who has now decided to visit our school to speak to students!

The Waverley Council Children and Young People survey aims at helping Council hear and involve children so that they can create a better place to live, learn, work and play together. The survey also includes an opportunity to enter a draw to win one of two Westfield Gift Vouchers to the value of $100 each. We are encouraging families from K-6 to get involved by completing this survey from Waverley Council:

Well done Stage 3, on representing Bondi Public School and for sharing your vision for a better future! We look forward to sharing some more news after the mayor visits.

Road Safety

We are very proud of the sustainable and healthy habits our students demonstrate through to and from school travel, however unfortunately it has been observed by staff that there are a significant number of students riding bikes, scooters and skateboards to school without head protection. We have ongoing conversations with our students about road safety and the importance of wearing helmets, but we really need support from home. Thank you in advance!

Emergency Evacuation Rehearsal (Drill)

In the next week our school will be facilitating an emergency evacuation rehearsal. This is a mandatory requirement in ensuring our processes are effective. Teachers have spoken to students about the drill, its purpose and reiterated that it’s a rehearsal, to ease any anxieties.

After completing the rehearsal, staff will reflect on our emergency and evacuation procedures in different situations, identify any areas for improvement, and refine procedures to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone at our school in any emergencies.

Our local emergency services will be notified prior to the rehearsal.

Warm regards Anna O’Connor Deputy Principal

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Welcome back to Term 2 where our PBL team have been busy continuing to reward students for being Safe, Respectful Learners with Wellie tokens! The competition is very close at the moment. Stage 3 is in the lead in the count for tokens, with Stage 1 not far behind. As always, there is lots of time for the other Stages to catch up! This week, we are asking students for their opinion about creating consistent in-class expectations that align with our PBL values. Surveys will be completed by teachers in class and we look forward to hearing the students’ voices! Our Positive Behaviour for Learning focus this fortnight is The Middle Playground. Students are Safe by wearing a hat, walking around corners and staying in bounds. Students are Respectful by following instructions from teachers and using kind words and actions. Students are Learners by placing their rubbish in the bin, playing by the rules and lining up when the music plays. Finally, well done to everyone for trying their hardest and congratulations to our PBL award winners!

S.T.E.A.M NEWS! There is some exciting news from Mr Forbes in the Science Room – last year he entered Bondi Public into a competition to do with SpaceX in the USA. Background Info: The 'One Giant Leap Foundation' has begun a scientific investigation with SpaceX to discover how being exposed to the radiation and low gravity environment of space would effect the growth of seeds. The seeds that Australia sent up as part of this experiment come from the native plant - the GOLDEN WATTLE. The foundation launched a competition searching for worthy public schools to participate in this experiment. The winners would receive the space seeds, along with some seeds from the same plant that had not gone to spend 6 months in space, and to track their growth long term. And BONDI PUBLIC SCHOOL WAS CHOSEN! We are going to receive the SPACE WATTLE SEEDS and germinate them, nurture them, grow them, and eventually transplant them to our beautiful playground as a permanent reminder of the power of the scientific process! Any Updates? The seeds were launched in December last year on flight CRS-21, and have now been on board the Space Station for a bit over 4 months. They are due to re-enter the atmosphere in July, and after a period of quarantine will arrive at Bondi Public school for our part in this experiment to begin. This past Monday, we received an amazing image of our packet of wattle seeds hovering in zero gravity on board the ISS! Check it out!

So what’s next? When the seeds return, we will record their growth data into an app shared across the other chosen schools for this amazing project. We will take our part in learning some amazing new information that could be used to understand how we will be able to transport seeds between planets. Just imagine... forests on Mars... crops on the Moon... algae growing in the oceans of Titan... scientific discovery is truly amazing!

K- 1 Cross Country Last week K-1 ran the Cross Country at school. I ran and it was really fun. I nearly won the race but I slipped at the end so I didn't end up winning but it was so close! It was hard work running around the school but everyone still had the best time.' Indigo 1/2 Red.
