One of the most frequent questions I am asked about following Jesus is simply, “What do I do now?”

The answer is simple and profound...do right!

Doing the next right thing isn’t a new to me statement...it actually comes from Alcoholics Anonymous! It’s a slogan that recovering addicts use to get life together. Most of us don’t come to Christ and know exactly what to do. We’re figuring out how to get life together. So,here’s the starting point… do the next right thing!

We get so caught up with “correctness” and fail to realize that God really wants us to be about righteousness!

So what do we do?

How do I do the next right thing?

Will I be able to recognize right if I see it?

You will make mistakes. But, you should make every effort to do right!

Read Luke 2:41-45.

It was a regular thing for Jewish families to go to Temple gatherings for worship and ritual in the ancient world. The crowds were huge. Somewhere along the way, Jesus and his parents are separated. When they found Jesus, He was with the teachers! His parents questioned Him about why He was there...His reply, “I’m doing my Father’s work.”

The model Jesus lived was living God’s way...doing the right thing!

Read Matthew 7:24-27.

Jesus says we are like a wise builder when we listen to His words and do what He says! Doing the right thing centers around knowing God’s word.

Read 2 Timothy 3:16; Romans 12:1-2; Isaiah 1:17

All of God’s word is useful for helping me know what is right and how to live it. To know what’s right I need my thinking to be so influenced by God’s word...I need to seriously change my mind! That’s why it is so important for anyone who wants to follow Jesus to be reading the Bible and to be connecting with others who can help us understand it when we don’t. If I’m going to do right...I need to know what’s right so I can recognize right in all that I do!

God’s word... all of it...even the hard parts; the “do nots”... are meant for my benefit!

Read James 4:17; Galatians 6:6-10

James 4:17...honestly, bothers me...I get not doing wrong being wrong. It took me a long time to realize that not doing right is just as wrong! James 4:17 needs to bother me and move me to do right!A big part of the reason why we do the right thing is that it is love for God.Jesus said to his followers, “If you love me, you will obey my teachings.” John 14:15Another big reason we do the next right thing is that it shows others our faith in Christ. Jesus called this being His witness.

One day Jesus was teaching the crowd and said to them, “You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.” Matthew 7:16-18

Bearing fruit means doing right and doing good things for others as Jesus’ follower!

Do the next right thing!

Glad to be your pastor,

Jeremy

Magnolia Men’s Monthly Meeting

In today's world with its economic, political and family problems, Grace Fox's book, "Moving from Fear to Freedom" is a wonderfully written book on the emotionally packed topic of fear. Grace shares her personal experiences with honesty. "Our Kid's Well Being", "Lessons Learned in the Storm", and "It's Not About Gray Hair and Wrinkles" are ample chapter titles. Each chapter contains stories from scripture and ends with some practical helps: questions to focus your thinking and scripture used as a basis for prayer. It is a must read for women who want to understand the many aspects of fear and what to do about them. Pick up this practical guide and see what God can do in your life.
