I. CONTEXTUAL FACTORS
MDD Standard
The teacher candidate collects data regarding the institutional and classroom
contexts, the characteristics of the pupils as a group and its diversity, using this
information to plan and deliver instruction.
1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality or
owner and school factors: Below, describe the geographic location, community
and school population, socioeconomic profile, and race/ethnicity.
1 Adapted to the MDD standards and tasks from based the document Level II
Teacher Work Sample. University of Northern Iowa, Level 2 of the UNI Teacher
Education Professional Sequence.
The university is located near a main road between Talcahuano and Concepción.
The University belongs to the CRUCH. This university has 6.100 students and 800
teachers. UCSC is a traditional one that is why there is a wide range of students with
scholarships, in other words most of the students come from middle class families.
The institution works under Christian values. The facilities consist of labs, a library,
wifi access, gym, extra programmatic classes, medical assistance, and a cafeteria,
among other things. As the university has interchange programs there are some
foreign students in the institution and some students from different ethnic groups.
1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons: Explain specific ways that
these factors may impact your lesson topics, teaching strategies, assessment
techniques, etc.
Taking into account the geographic location of students, the lessons topics will be
based upon their daily life and their cultural background. Furthermore, these
factors will have an impact in the lesson in the sense that not all the students
have the same previous knowledge. Another point is that not all of the students
use the target language in their daily lives, so the use of the teaching strategies
are used to explain the contents in an easier manner (miming, visual aids, drilling,
etc).
2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications: Below, describe
how two student characteristics you observed in your student (e.g., gender,
race/ethnicity, interests, and student skill levels) might impact the way you instruct
those students. For example, your planning, motivation, management, or
assessment. For each example of the student characteristic, give a specific
instructional implication that will influence how you plan and implement your
instruction.
2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:
In terms of student’s skill level, they are not used to use the English language as a
second one. They are not accustomed to some English words, expressions and
grammar structures. Besides, they have some difficulties and misunderstandings
about the phonetic pronunciation of some words.
2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
According to these characteristics, the teaching of vocabulary explanation is based
on these teaching strategies: realia (objects from real life using in education),
miming, visual aids and drilling (for the correct pronunciation of words). The purpose
of these activities are used in order to make easy the student`s understanding and
class activities.
2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:
According to the student`s interests, they are studying physical education, so the
teacher has adapted the contents related with their profession. The teacher has
considered that another kind of topics will not be interested for them. So, she gets
them motivated in order to achieve a complete understanding and learning process.
2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
The topics that will be motivating for them are sports, a healthy life, and sedentary
lifestyle, among others. Students will be engaged with the class and will be easy for
us to get the student`s attention, due to these topics are related to their daily lives.
3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications:
Below, describe how two physical aspects of the classroom you observed (e.g.,
posters, room arrangement, technology) might impact the way you instruct
students, for example, planning, motivation, management, or assessment. For
each example, give a specific instructional implication that will influence how you
plan and implement your instruction.
3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:
At the beginning of the lesson the chairs are in lines, but then the chairs are rearrange
with the purpose of practice in the classroom.
3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
With the new position of the chairs it is easier for students to communicate and practice
in groups and to move around. Also, having the chairs positioned in groups is an
advantage for the teacher, because it is also easier for her to move around in the
classroom in order to monitor students’ work and to provide feedback.
3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:
The presence of a computer and a projector in the classroom are very useful in order to
engage students’ attention. These implements are situated in the classroom with the
purpose to make the classes more dynamic.
3.2.1How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
The computer has been used by the teacher to show an extract from a movie based on
daily routine. Also she uses it to play some conversations based on activities and daily
routine.
3. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the context to
provide quality teaching
As we have observed during this period, students’ background is a very important factor
to have in consideration when we plan. If we know their background we are going to
now their English level, the way that they learn, how many time they need to understand
and practice a new topic. All these factors must be taken into consideration if we want
our students to success.
