Some information
on
ME2101…
• There is NO final examination for this module!
• Assessment is based on one small group design assignment (25%) and a quiz(75%).(Small group = minimum 2 maximum 3 students)
• Tutorial:
• Dr Goh, Prof Lai –None
•
Prof Seah
–Yes
Some information on ME2101…
• Text books:
• Dr Goh – No particular text book, but students are encouraged to read books about engineering design (shelf TA174), e.g:
• Design Concepts
for
Engineers
by
Horenstein (cases
studies)
• Engineering Design Process by Haik, Shahin (formal process)
• Engineering Design by Dhillon (human factors)
• Prof Seah – Mechanical Engineering Design by Shigley/Mischke, McGraw‐Hill.
• Prof Lai – None

Formation of
project
groups
Design assignment:
• Form groups of 2 to 3 students by next lecture.
• Those unable to find partners will be assigned partners during the next lecture.
• Project titles will be announced next week.
What is engineering design?
• A purposeful activity directed toward the goal of fulfilling human needs, particularly those which can be met by technological factors of our civilization.
• Characteristics:
• Goal (or need) oriented
• Has multiple possible solutions
• Work within constraints
• Evolutionary/iterative
• Value comparative
• Outcome is guided by compromises

• Could the engines be placed further away from the wheels? ‐Space constraint due to delta wing design?
• Could the engine intake be redesigned to be slanted?
• Could the underside of the wing near the wheels be strengthened or made with tough but light‐weight materials so that fuel tank could not be punctured?

Conclusions:
• There is still much to learn in area of design.
• Design engineers have still a long way to go to design perfectly safe products!
