Analysis of Digipaks by Stacie Molot

Page 2: Media covers analysis

no name of the band - recognisable face in russian rock music industry

conventional for rock genre, tattoo, messy hair, striped shirt. The shirt gives it a grunge look.

Not conventional for the genre - the album cover appears quite light, the name of the album is "Love loving", which contrasts with what they normally sing about, as all the songs are very anti romantic.

This might be a reason why singer`s eyes and mouth are closed with tape - indicating blindness and speachlessness of people who are in love

Very soft lighting used - shadows are very soft, reinforces the love theme and the name of the album .

The image of the artist takes up the majority (all the space) of the frame; therefore his image is most important.

The lightning coming from the artist - emotions, tension, they also create the rock atmosphere

Very powerful image of closed eyes and mouth, senses being taken from him. But if a person can`t see the emphasis is on feelings

This is a poster for the concert introducing the new album

MM – initials, in a gothic font. The fonts are quite conventional for the genre. 3 different ones – unusual. This is interesting because he is quite a recognisable character so he doesn’t need to put his full name. Even somebody who is not a big fan would recognise him. His image has become widely recognised. His look is very iconic.

A watercolour painting instead of the picture, which is also bright and colourful. This adds to the artistic nature of the cover. It can be viewed as art in itself as well as selling the product. The image of the artist takes up the majority of the frame; therefore his image is most important.

Disproportional horns that reflect the dark image of the artist.

Dark eyes and sharp shadows create atmosphere. The one lighter eye has been a consistent part of his image for years – again, it is iconic.

The head is built into the background, with the trees (crosses) on the background. This could refer to the fact he has been part of the landscape of rock music for a long time.

conventional rock cover - monochrome colour scheme, the name of the band in the centre

no name of the album!

Name of the recording studio in the corner

Contrast between Taylor Momsen (girl) and the rest of the band - she stands out, because she brighter than the others. She is the image of the band and is very recognisable.

Conventional location - gate, old house - creating the atmosphere

Typical rock look of the members of the band - guys with black long hair, one with a beard, dark clothes

Page 6: Media covers analysis

font emphasising the punk genre, it is almost like grafitti

The image shows that the band is from England, and sings about England english flag even appears in the frame. And the guys. The strong connections to the meaning of their songs, the social problems and their conflicts with the queen and police.

One of the guys on the floor - rebellion, reflects their political views, anarchy. Is literally pressed by the system?

Image is black and white, but the uniforms are coloured red, and the flag too. Also the band`s name is coloured. It seems like people lose their personality, they only have the colours that are given to them.

All of the queen`s guards look exactly the same, representing society, the guy on the floor is representing the pressure of it and of the monarchy.

government trying to make everyone the same?

No reaction from any other people, even though one of the men fainted

This is a poster for their song "God save the queen", when they rephrased the hymn of England during Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in 1977. The record's lyrics, as well as the cover, were controversial at the time

Assault of the Queen and monarchy - her eyes and mouth covered with the name of the band and the name of the song

Sometimes a picture can be taken especially for the digipak cover, but it would not hold any particular meaning or information. (e.g. The pretty Reckless) It would just show us the members of the band. But sometimes a random picture could be used, which in this particular context will have a certain meaning. (Sex Pistols)

Name of the band and of the album appear few times

Actual artists performing on a cake, no pictures of them needed because they are very recognisable people.

Unconventional for the genre, very original image

clock ,ight refer to the time they have been performing ssince it is the 8th album of the band

vinyl - this was the format music was played in and released at the time

A film reel showing that they were filmed a lot

One of the interpretations of this image is that all the details included are things that are making the band as it is.
