A power strip that is certified for medical use:

    • Must conform to Safety Standard UL 60601-1, IEC 60601-1, EN 60601-1 or CAN/CSA-

    C22.2 NO. 60601-1-08

    • Intended for use or likely to be used in the patient care vicinity

    • Must have receptacle covers that can only be opened with the use of a tool toprevent accidental contact with unused receptacles

    • Enclosure leakage current must not exceed 0.1mA in normal condition

    Leakage Current

    • Leakage current flowing between line and ground in electrical equipment can present

a lethal shock hazard to users

    • The susceptibility of a patient to serious injury or death increases with patient-

    connected medical equipment

    • The low impedance path between the patient and equipment creates an

environment where the patient may complete the fault circuit

The space within a patient care room intended for examination and treatment of

    patients that:

    • Extends 6 feet beyond the normal location of the patient bed, chair, table or other

    device that supports the patient

•Extends 7.5 feet vertically above the floor from the patient bed, chair, table or otherdevice that supports the patient

Why does the patient care vicinity exist as a defined space?

    • Electrical equipment that is directly or indirectly connected to a patient poses the

greatest risk for electrical shock, and therefore more stringent protection

    requirements would be necessary

    • These strict requirements are unnecessarily restrictive in lower risk areas
