Today most people think that they need medications and high-

priced hospital treatments to heal. But before the advent of synthetic

compounds, the body was accustomed to natural herbs and spices.

God has placed upon the Earth hundreds, actually thousands of

healing botanicals. You just have to know how to use them and it is my

hope that my ebook will teach you exactly that! No matter how old,

how uncomfortable or how ill you feel right now, I want to inspire you

to hold on and try some of the herbs and spices you learn about today.

You can heal with God’s plants. The plant-derived medicine that you

read about today was discussed eons ago in biblical times. The herbs

from the Scriptures have medicinal benefits and even though I am a

pharmacist, I believe that we can heal with what God gave to us. In

fact, in Genesis 1:29 (which by the way is my birthdate) it is stated:

“AND GOD SAID, BEHOLD, I HAVE GIVEN YOU EVERY HERB BEARING SEED, WHICH [IS] UPON THE FACE OF ALL THE EARTH,

AND EVERY TREE, IN THE WHICH [IS]THE FRUIT OF A TREE YIELDING SEED;

TO YOU IT SHALL BE FOR MEAT.”

ALMONDPrunus dulcisGenesis 43:11, Numbers 17

Almonds contain salicin which, when consumed, forms salicylic acid, the primary by-product of aspirin metabolization. We all know what aspirin’s for, don’t we? Anecdotal evidence suggests headache and pain sufferers get a cumulative effect of this almond-derived ‘aspirin.’ In other words, regular headaches might become less severe or disappear gradually with regular consumption of almonds. Eating 10 to 15 almonds per day might give you some mild pain relief. If you are sensitive to salicylates or aspirin, almonds might make your throat itch or give you an allergic reaction.

The almond is a popular symbol of resurrection because it is the first tree of the season to flower imparting beautiful white flowers in the cold months of January or February. It is a sight to behold with snow on the flowers. Almonds are mentioned at least 6 times in the Scriptures and only in the Old Testament.

Page 6: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

6

The most popular reference to almonds is in Numbers 17:Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses went into the tabernacle of witness, and behold, the rod of Aaron, of the house of Levi, had sprouted and put forth buds, had produced blossoms and yielded ripe almonds. Then Moses brought out all the rods from before the Lord to all the children of Israel; and they looked, and each man took his rod.

In today’s modern kitchen, almonds are a staple in salads and deserts as well as ground up flour. I use almonds for desert if I can find them, they’re especially craveable when covered in dark chocolate, organic of course! The gluten-free trend has made almond flour an almost indispensable staple in the kitchen as it bakes well and is very low in carbohydrates. Many people with diabetes substitute almond flour for all-purpose or wheat flour. Further, almond “milk” is sold worldwide now as a substitute for cow’s milk.

Almonds are rich in magnesium, a mineral that helps to lessen nerve excitability and improve muscle relaxation. The versatile nuts provide even higher amounts of vitamin E, potassium, and manganese, as well as a little bit of copper, riboflavin, zinc and phosphorous. Even though a quarter cup of almonds contains 18 grams of fat, eleven of those are the heart-healthy monounsaturated kind. Eating almonds gives you a sense of satiety and may help control appetite since you will quickly feel full after eating them. The antioxidants which are clustered in the brown layer of the skin are thought to protect your cell membranes from damage.

Speaking of evidence-based benefits, A study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that amonds can decrease post-prandial (after eating) blood sugar, as well as insulin and oxidative damage. In a clinical trial of 60 male smokers, scientists found that just 3 ounces of almonds eaten each day could reduce oxidative stress biomarkers by 23 to 34 percent over a 4 week time frame. Taken together, this data

and other studies I’ve perused on pubmed lead me to believe that almonds are a superfood, ranked up there with colorful berries and leafy greens.

ALOEAquilara malaccensisJohn 19:39, Proverbs 7:17, Psalm 45:8, Song of Solomon 4:14

The Bible mentions aloe a number of times but it’s not the type of spiky plant you’re thinking of that soothes cuts and minor abrasions. In biblical times, this type of aloe, was also known as aloes, lign-aloes, aloeswood, and agarwood, all much different than the aloe plant in your kitchen. Aloes is obtained from the Aquilarian tree, an evergreen tree native to northern India and Southeast Asia. Aloes is a very expensive resin or gum extracted from the tree. The tree produces this resin and essential oil as a natural defense mechanism to ward off pathogens like fungus. The resin forms as a reaction from some kind of injury to the tree, which is thought to trigger an “infection” and thus elicits the oleoresin to grow within the heartwood of the Aquilarian tree.

This type of aloe was often a gift combined with myrrh, cassia (cinnamon) and other special spices used to perfume clothing and bed linens as noted in Psalms 45:8. It was historically used by the Egyptians for embalment of their deceased. It has been used as incense, perfume, and traditional medicinal herbs in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for eons. John 19:39 shows that Nicodemus brought it with myrrh to embalm the body of the Lord.

Traditionally, it was used to help against pain and diseases with inflammation. In modern day China, aloeswood is also used to relieve nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) research shows that it is helpful for loosening

Page 8: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

8

phlegm and gastrointestinal stagnation or toxic bowels induced by chemotherapy. One of the reasons why Aloes or agarwood essential oil helps reduce pain and inflammation may be because it has been shown to reduce and remove cancer cells. While the general plant name sounds like aloe vera, it is far different and very costly even today. This ancient essential oil from the Aquilarian tree was such a rarity that it was considered to be worth its weight in gold. Today, the oil is still highly prized as an luxury item in the East.

ANISEPimpinella anisumMathew 23:23

Anise has an uncannily similar taste of licorice and has been known since the time of the ancient Egyptians. It was mentioned in Jesus’ rebuke of the Pharisees although some scholars have argued the translation of “anethon” should have been “dill.” Both plants are similar and of the same plant family.

Kings used anise to perfume their linens and it was enjoyed by both Greeks and Romans to flavor cake and breads. Anise is soothing to the stomach and is frequently used as a digestive aid. It can improve bad breath and in today’s pharmaceuticals, you will sometimes find anise flavor to mask a bad taste.

Some folks feel that hanging anise plants can keep bad dreams at bay but I haven’t tried that myself since I don’t have bad dreams. For that matter, I rarely remember my dreams!

There are many varieties of anise. What’s fascinating to me as a pharmacist is that compounds in anise can reduce morphine dependence! As for women, it has very beneficial effects on painful

Page 9: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

9

menstruation (termed dysmenorrhea) as well as menopausal hot flashes. In diabetic patients, aniseeds showed hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects, while also reducing lipid peroxidation. The most important compounds of aniseeds essential oil were estragole, trans-anetole, a-hymachalen, para-anisaldehyde and methyl cavicol.

Pregnant women should probably avoid anise because it is classified as a “abortifacient” which means it has the potential to cause miscarriage in high enough doses. It’s a muscle relaxant, in fact, aniseed relaxes muscles in the respiratory tract so well that it would be my pick for you, if you told me you had asthma or other respiratory disorders. Anise or aniseed are not the same as star anise, that is something else.

The best-known use for aniseed is for the digestive tract. This use is even endorsed by the German Commission E (equivalent to the United States Food & Drug Administration). Aniseed may be helpful with coughing as it is a good expectorant. The potent powers are the result of plant-based compounds found in anise like “creosol” and “alpapinene” which help with congestion and coughing. Finally, its effect on digestion is excellent, relieving constipation, bloating, abdominal cramps, flatulence and mild colic.

BLACK CUMIN Nigella sativaIsaiah 28:23

Black cumin is planted in the winter and by early summer, its jet black seeds can be cultivated. These have a very distinct flavor are used to flavor bread and other baked goods. According to the Bible, the seeds are still threshed from the fruits by beating the dried plants with a stick (Isaiah 28:28).

Page 10: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

10

Black cumin is not the same as plain cumin, these are two different spices that look different and taste different. You can include black cumin spice in your diet or look for softgel supplements of “Black Cumin Seed” oil which can help you head to toe.

The benefits of this herb are beyond phenomenal.

Researchers found that compounds in black cumin help reduce blood sugar and improve beta cell function in the pancreas, thus this can help with diabetes. Another study suggests that it can help reduce the frequency of seizures in children who became resistant to drug therapy! This anti-convulsant property is a real blessing.

MRSA is a deadly antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection, and patients responded favorably to treatment with black cumin seed. What about cancer? A study published in the online journal PLoS One indicates a compound called “thymoquinone” from black seed can induce tumor cell death in glioblastoma cells. Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive brain tumors of all. It appears to offer the same benefits in both oral and breast cancer.

BITTER HERBSExodus 12:8, Numbers 9:11

If you just ate a salad of fresh leafy greens, chances are you had some plants that are considered bitter herbs. The most common bitter herbs are romaine lettuce and horseradish. Your Caesar salad is more ‘biblical’ than you thought. Other “bitter herbs” include endive, green onions and parsley. These bitter herbs were consumed with unleavened bread and lamb by the Jews during the first Passover as noted in Exodus.

Page 11: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

11

The traditional ‘bite’ that you get when you eat horseradish, known scientifically as Armoracia rusticana, contains compounds that provide antioxidants which supports detoxification. It also helps to stimulate saliva, gastric and intestinal enzymes to help with digestion. High levels of vitamin C are present along with several vital minerals such as potassium, manganese, iron, copper, magnesium, zinc, and sodium.

B vitamins are in horseradish root, which by the way, contains an enzyme called horseradish peroxidase. This enzyme is highly reactive to cancer cells. In fact, scientists have studied “horseradish peroxidase” in combination with indole 3 acetic acid (a plant-derived compound) for its effects on nasopharyngeal, bladder and breast cancer.

Lactuca sativa or “romaine” lettuce is another bitter herb. The tips of romaine lettuce are the more bitter portion and they provide lots of nutrients whether you juice them or eat them in your salads or lunch wraps. In fact, romaine lettuce beats many other common green leafy veggies for its overall nutritional value. It’s definitely more nutritious than iceberg lettuce. You can tell because it is darker, so it contains more chlorophyll and remains more nutrient dense.

Romaine contains essential nutrients with higher content like calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, folate, and other B vitamins which you need to run your Methylation and Transmethylation detoxification pathway. Physicians reading this may be interested in more about these pathways, and if that’s the case, you will want to check out my “Keyring Pathways” which explains more about genes, and medication-induced SNPs.

Romaine has the highest amount of folate of all the common lettuces. Folate itself is essential for life including the proper formation of DNA

Page 12: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

12

in your unborn children. Folate is particularly important to pregnant mothers. Folate is needed for healthy red blood cell formation and immune system function. Without nutrients from the “bitter herbs” like romaine, energy production, mood, cognition, sleep, and physicalstrength would be compromised. Given the journey the Israelites were about to embark on after Passover, they needed as much reserves and strength as possible, making Bitter Herbs of any sort a must.

CUMIN Cumimum cyminumIsaiah 28:28

Cumin is part of the parsley family, and was a popular spice during biblical times. Cumin seeds, which are really fruits, have a warm, bitter flavor that can used to flavor cheese, soups, sauces (like tandoori and taco sauce) and curries. Medicinally speaking, cumin is a strong antibiotic and a digestive aid.

It can act upon genes that require certain minerals like iron and manganese. More specifically, cumin is a great source of iron and manganese, two minerals that serve as a cofactors driving important metabolic pathways in your body. For example, you need iron to break down hydrogen peroxide. You need manganese as well. Without adequate amounts of both of these minerals, dangerous peroxide will build up in your body and spark a lot of pain and inflammation, as well as elevated thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies to your thyroid gland. For more on thyroid, please refer to my Thyroid Healthy book.

Some research suggests that cumin stimulates pancreatic enzymes and improves insulin sensitivity. In animals that had diabetes, cumin extract was given, and found to be more effective at reducing blood glucose and AGE (advanced glycation end products) than glyburide

Page 13: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

13

(also known as glibenclamide), a blockbuster drug for diabetes.

It may help with cataracts as well, according to another animal study. There are some studies that suggest it can reduce cholesterol, triglycerides and pancreatic inflammation chemicals. Could this mean consumption is good for people diabetes? I think so.

Cumin is a powerful antioxidant and best of all, it could help with asthma, acting as a bronchodilator. Asthmatics deal with scary episodes of respiratory distress and here’s a natural spice that may help. You don’t inhale it, you eat it in your foods or take supplemental forms.

CINNAMON Cinnamomum aromaticum Exodus 30:23, Ezekiel 27, Proverbs 7:17, Psalm 45, Revelation 18:13

Cassia and cinnamon are derived from closely related plants but they are not exactly the same. Cassia known scientifically as “Cinnamomum aromaticum” is hard to find today, I have to buy mine from speciality spice stores, but it was prized in Biblical times, even more than gold in some areas. The commercial sort of cinnamon that is in 99.9 percent of homes today is known as Cinnamomum zelandicum.

Cassia was mentioned as a trade item in Ezekiel 27. And in Psalm 45, the garments of the King were anointed with cassia (as well as myrrh). And again in Proverbs 7:17 where it was stated: “I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.”

Today, spices sold in grocery stores use the commercial sort, which has a delicious pungent flavor associated with fall and winter. Today, cinnamon can be used for athlete’s foot, indigestion, improve brain

Page 14: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

14

function, helps lower blood glucose levels, among many others.

Medicinally speaking, cinnamon is known to support diabetes and help reduce blood sugar. Studies done on cinnamon for blood sugar are almost always conducted with the cinnamon that is sold in supermarkets and health food stores, not with cassia. In a recent clinical trial, 109 people with Type 2 diabetes were evaluated and those people who received cinnamon showed a slight reduction in hemoglobin A1c, a biomarker of blood sugar.

In a smaller study, people with Type 2 diabetes who sprinkled 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon daily showed a reduction in fasting blood sugar by about 29 percent. Cinnamon may positively impact hypertension and cholesterol ratios. Sprinkle it on your hot chocolate, coffee, oatmeal and barbecue recipes, it’s such a simple way to improve flavor and health.

FIGS Ficus carica Jeremiah 24:2, Samuel 30:12, 2 Kings 20:7 and Isaiah 38:21

Native to the Middle East and western Asia, the fig tree has been an important food crop since ancient times. Dozens of Biblical references point to its common use as a food, leaves for medicinal or other functional purposes, and the presence of the bush tree in the Bible. Figs grow on the Ficus tree, which is a member of the Mulberry family. Its use has been identified even back to about 9400 BC. In Jeremiah 24:2, it was stated:

“One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early; the other basket had very bad figs, so bad they could not be eaten.”

Page 15: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

15

If you have ever eaten a fig cookie, you will have noticed its seeds. Figs are loaded with seeds that give it high fiber and helps satisfy hunger. Figs are also a good source of vitamin B5 and B6, copper, potassium, and manganese.

Figs come in many colors. These colors are due to powerful phytochemicals or antioxidants called oliogoproanthocyanidins or OPCs. The riper the fig is, the higher the antioxidant content. Research published in the Chemistry Pharmacological Bulletin 2015 shows that figs contain triterpenoids, famous for their powerful anticancer activity. Biblical information also tells us that figs were often used in cakes and presented for nourishment to warriors after their battles or long journeys. The fruit has been shown to be highly beneficial at stabilizing blood sugar and supports healthy energy production.

Bible verses describe other benefits of figs. Its not just the fruit that provides nutritional benefit, the leaves of the fig tree are also valuable. Twice mentioned in Scripture, is the taking of a lump of figs, making it into a paste or plaster and then laying it upon a boil on your skin. History tells us that Hippocrates dressed skin ulcers and wounds with fig leaves.

Page 16: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

16

Extracts from the fig leaf has been tested in modern times, and today we know it can improve insulin activity, kidney function and liver detoxification. In some test tube studies, fig leaves stopped certain cancer cells from growing. In animal studies, fig leaves have been shown to lower triglycerides. I eat them as soon as they come into season! They are wonderful sliced up and put on a cracker with some fresh chèvre cheese.

FRANKINCENSE Boswellia serrataExodus 30:34, Leviticus 2:1, 2:15, Matthew 2:11, Song of Solomon 3:6

Around the holidays, we are reminded of the most famous gifts in history, gold, frankincense and myrrh, carried by the 3 wise men. If we could go back to these ancient times, we’d know without a doubt that these valuable items were fit to honor a king or deity. The gold was, and still is, a precious expensive metal, the frankincense was used in perfume and incense, and the myrrh used as anointing oil during burials or important religious ceremonies.

What is frankincense exactly? It is actually a gummy resin, not a leaf or berry like most herbal supplements. It’s not sap, although you can think of it that way if you want to. The sap from the boswellia tree will ooze out forming small white peas, which harden in the air and turns yellow. These are burned for the aroma.

Scholars of Christianity and other biblical theologians have long pondered why the gifts of the Magi chose to include frankincense. What was the significance? Was it intended to spare Jesus from future bodily aches and pains? It may sound ludicrous to you and I, however, it is possible according to Cardiff University professors in Wales, who have been studying the medicinal uses of frankincense.

Page 17: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

17

These researchers have studied frankincense for years, and they’ve confirmed the presence of compounds in frankincense that actually relieve arthritis by inhibiting the inflammation that breaks down cartilage tissue, causing arthritis pain.

Their new study validates traditional uses of frankincense as an herbal remedy to treat joint pain and inflammation throughout communities in the vicinity of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula; that is where the trees grow. Boswellia is often studied for its use in relieving joint pain since it works similar to prescription anti-inflammatories. Did the Magi “from the East” know of frankincense’s healing properties when they presented the gift to Jesus? It was highly prized back then, and it still is today, although commercially, it is listed by another name.

Medicinally, frankincense goes by the name of “Boswellia” and there are many varieties of it. It will be found in dietary supplements to mimic the effects of prescription drugs like Celebrex or Ibuprofen. I even put it in my JointScript.

Frankincense is also sold as an essential oil, and a ground powder which I buy at the local apothecary to encapsulate myself at home.

Page 18: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

18

Peaking inside my home, I’ll tell you frankincense and myrrh are often diffusing through my bedroom via an essential oil aromatizer. You can do this too. You just pour 3 to 5 drops of it into a little water and plug your aromatized in the wall. It will diffuse through your room for several hours. The oil of frankincense is calming and soothing and you will naturally deepen your breathing. Most of us hold our breath, so deeper inhalations and exhalations with frankincense diffusing in the room is going to do wonders for your state of mind and overall health.

I also take frankincense as a supplement, orally, just for the health benefits. I know too much about it and love it! Today, perfumes, incense and candles are often infused with these two wonderful aromas.

Boswellia has been studied and found to prevent the growth of certain types of cancers in ‘test tube’ studies. In 2009, researchers examined AKBA or “acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid” and found positive benefits. This study was titled, Frankincense Superior to Chemotherapy in Killing Late-Stage Ovarian Cancer Cells. This is not the first study to suggest anti-cancer properties. The results of another study proved that frankincense oil could help with bladder cancer. The researchers concluded, “Frankincense oil might represent an alternative intravesical agent for bladder cancer treatment.”

Studies have shown that boswellia essential oil may have the ability to unwrap biofilm on resistant staph, candida and other infections. If you’d like to watch my video on “Frankincense and Myrrh” please click here.

GARLIC Allium sativumNumbers 11.5

Garlic is mentioned in the Bible when the Israelites were wandering in the desert after they escaped from slavery in Egypt. The Israelites were remembering the dietary delicacies found in Egypt that included garlic, melons, onions, and leeks. This savory herb was used by Ancient Egyptians for culinary and medicinal purposes. It has been a staple in the Mediterranean region for thousands of years.

Garlic is an herb called “the stinking rose.” It has an impressive list of health benefits. The sulfur rich compounds produce the pungent odor which is the source of many health promoting effects. The entire “head” is called a garlic bulb, while each segment is called a clove. There are about ten to twenty cloves in a single bulb. Garlic has powerful anti-inflammatory effects especially for the heart and circulatory system. It has been shown to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, and blood pressure.

The journal Cancer Prevention Research shows that the sulfur compounds found in garlic deactivate cancer causing compounds, have numerous antimicrobial benefits, and provide major antioxidant support.

Cardiovascular disease is associated with multiple factors such as raised serum total cholesterol, elevated LDL and an increase in LDL oxidation, increased platelet aggregation, hypertension, and smoking. Numerous in vitro studies have confirmed the ability of garlic to positively impact these parameters.

Page 20: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

20

Garlic can inhibit enzymes involved in lipid synthesis, decrease platelet aggregation, prevent lipid peroxidation of oxidized red blood cells and LDL, increase antioxidant status, and inhibit Angiotension-Converting Enzyme (ACE). The latter means that garlic can act like drugs such as ACE inhibitors, known as lisinopril or enalapril.

Garlic reduces cholesterol, inhibits platelet aggregation (like a blood thinner), reduces blood pressure, and increases antioxidant status. Mixed results have been obtained in the area of garlic’s impact on blood pressure but it is mostly positive. This power packed ‘stinky rose’ has been shown to affect each stage of cancer growth and modify cancer risk. Garlic also helps reduce inflammation and even helps improve iron metabolism. It sounds like dinner needs to have some garlic added to it.

MARJORAMMarjorana hortensisLeviticus 14:4

Marjoram has a lot of confusion surrounding it because someone incorrectly classified it as oregano in the 18th century, and in the Holy Bible, it was misinterpreted as “hyssop” which is another biblical herb. But true marjoram has been used for centuries, and is sometimes left at gravesides to help a deceased loved one rest in peace. Interestingly, it is sometimes twined into bridal wreaths because it symbolizes love and honor.

Marjoram contains powerful compounds such as ursolic acid, thymol and carvacrol. These are strong antioxidants that aid digestion. Marjoram is able to trigger the release of pepsin, a protein-digesting enzyme termed “proteolytic” enzyme naturally found in your stomach (gastric) juice. Pepsin helps you break down proteins from meat, eggs, seeds, or dairy products and term them into smaller

Page 21: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

21

peptides. Marjoram increases pepsin production rather significantly, by up to 30 percent.

If you are worried about a stroke or heart attack, marjoram should be sprinkled on your food because it works a bit like aspirin; it is a natural, mild blood thinner that reduces platelet stickiness, thus making your blood flow better through your vessels. Researchers found that it could reduce clumping of blood components that cause dangerous blood clots by 40 percent which makes it no-brainer in people with cardiovascular disease.

Finally, it could slow Alzheimer’s disease by boosting levels of your memory molecule acetylcholine. Ursolic acid is able to help ameliorate some of the symptoms of experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis in an animal study from the Journal of Neuroimmunology.

Marjoram may be helpful for gum or tooth infections. And as a nighttime sleep aid, I suggest you put a little in an essential oil diffuser for when you are sleepless or dealing with nervous tension. You can also rub it on your hands and feet or take a bath with 5 drops in the tub.

MILK THISTLESilybum marianumGenesis 3.18

This popular herb also goes by other names including Holy Thistle and Blessed Thistle. It has been associated with the Virgin Mary, from the tradition that her milk once fell upon its leaves. It’s a tall plant that grows about 4 feet tall.

Page 22: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

22

From Genesis 3:18: It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: “A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle underfoot.

Milk thistle is a liver-loving herb which helps you if you are sick, or have had too much food, food poisoning or alcohol-related liver problems. Your liver is the second largest organ, after your skin. Milk thistle is so protective of the liver that it might be the only thing that could save your life if you’re poisoned by Amanita mushrooms. You’ll probably never even get affected by those, but what about acetaminophen or paracetamol (brand name is Tylenol) … milk thistle can protect your liver from the damage of those analgesic drugs.

There are thousands of active ingredients in milk thistle, silymarin is one of them. This silymarin helps repair liver cells damaged from alcohol by stimulating proteins to grow and change the outside layer of your liver cells. By doing this, the toxins can’t get inside and new healthier liver cells can grow.

Silymarin encourages liver cell regrowth this is why it’s used frequently for hepatitis. It increases bile flow and may help with bowel disorders. Be careful however, it has an estrogen-like effect and may stimulate estrogen dominance (progesterone deficiency). In a woman, it may stimulate milk production if you are breast-feeding. It could be helpful to spark your menstrual cycle if you are late. Some experts feel that milk thistle’s estrogen-like effect may be useful for prostate cancer but please ask your oncologist.

MINT Mentha piperitaMatthew 23:23

Mint gives us menthol as one of its active ingredients! You know menthol because it is in many topical muscle-relieving salves. Compounds in natural mint leaves can help with digestive problems. It should be a genuine consideration for people with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth). For these uses, it is best taken as an enteric-coated peppermint oil capsule so it can get through your stomach acid. It works as an antimicrobial in the intestines. The enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules are important because this allows the pill to come apart in your intestines, not your stomach. Avoid peppermint if you have heartburn or reflux.

Peppermint is a consideration for colds and flu because it acts to relieve multiple symptoms to relieve congestion, head pain, muscle soreness, nausea and fever. You can drink a hot cup of peppermint tea or diffuse the essential oil in a person’s sick room to try and kill germs. If you dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil like almond oil, you can apply to your throat or chest. Peppermint also makes a good additive for a foot bath or regular bath for that matter!

Some of you have required chemotherapy and it has induced hot-flashes. There was a small study in the United Kingdom done on women who found that using a peppermint oil solution could lessen hot flashes induced by chemotherapy used for breast cancer. I don’t have the exact formula for this spray, however, something like 15 drops to 4 ounces of distilled water should have some effect.

MUSTARDSinapis albaMatthew 13:31, Matthew 17:20, Mark 4:31, Luke 13:19, Luke 17:6

Have you ever looked at mustard seed in the spice rack? It is tiny, really tiny. The seeds are usually about 1-2 millimeters in diameter. The gospels provide stories or parables of comparing the depth of faith and its fruitful benefits with examples of how planting a tiny seed could produce a mustard bush or tree. The tree would grow large enough for birds to nest in its branches. This tiny seed packs a punch also with its health benefits. In Matthew 17:20, it was stated:

“Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Mustard seeds have been used for centuries in traditional folk medicine. It is part of the cruciferous plant family which includes broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and others. This remarkable seed is packed with phytonutrients and sulfur related compounds that protects against cancer and support detoxification. This tiny seed contains high amounts of selenium, omega 3 fatty acids, manganese, vitamin B1, magnesium, phosphorus, and copper.

I love mayo and mustard, all of them, especially the spicy kind. Have you ever tried different mustards? The level of heat in a given mustard is directly related to the specific type of seed used. Yellow mustard seeds, sometimes called white seeds, are the mildest, while brown and black seeds much hotter and more pungent.

The liquid used to moisten those seeds in a particular recipe and bind the mustard also has a large impact on its pungency and overall

Page 25: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

25

flavor. You see, dried mustard seeds have no real heat on their own. Only after they’re blended with water do the natural enzymes get liberated from their dormant state.

No matter the color, the little mustard seed provides anti-inflammatory agents that act through signaling pathways to talk with immune compounds on managing inflammation.

If you have ever had a mustard plaster for chest congestion, you know how hot the paste and tissues can get when it is used. These mustard plasters are used to treat a number of disorders like rheumatism, arthritis, chest congestion or pneumonia, aching backs, sore muscles, nerve pain and abdominal pain. Its historical use is that as a stimulant, diuretic (like a water pill) and purgative or to cleanse tissues.

Mustard when used purposefully causes a release of inflammation and a deluge of macrophages to clean up stagnant tissues or areas of poor health. This is why mustard plasters have been used with coughs, joint pain and lung congestion. A mustard plaster is so powerful that if it left on too long, it can burn the skin. Just like In cooking and food preparation, mustard is a condiment. This tiny, almost microscopic seed produces giant effects in more ways than one!

MYRRHCommiphora myrrhaEsther 2:12, Genesis 37:25, Exodus 30:23, Matthew 2:11, Psalm 45:8

Myrrh comes from the gummy resin of the myrrh tree. The myrrh tree is native to Somalia, but the name “myrrh” is derived from the Hebrew “murr” or “maror,” which translates to “bitter.” Myrrh smells nice so it is commonly used in perfumes and also embalming oils but don’t burn it, myrrh gives off an almost repulsive odor.

Page 26: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

26

Biblically speaking, myrrh is mentioned throughout the Bible. It was one of the gifts that the Magi brought to the baby Jesus which some interpret as a foreshadowing of the bitterness that the infant and his parents would experience in years to come.

Mentions of myrrh found in Genesis 37:25, Exodus 30:23, Esther 2:12 as well as Matthew 2:11 and Psalm 45:8 where it was stated:

“All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.”

Myrrh is an old fashioned remedy for making a wash for infections. I keep 4 little bottles of myrrh essential oil, all around my house and in my purse, in case I just want to breathe it in, or apply it to a cut or scrape. I used it during the time of this writing because I cut my finger on a can of V8 vegetable juice. I pulled the tab on the can, but the tab didn’t quite let go of my finger! I bled for about 45 minutes and when it finally settled down and I could release the pressure, I applied essential oil of myrrh. I also have the powder which, when mixed with water, makes a nice paste, so I applied that as well. Within just 2 days, I was completely healed. Without the myrhh, I’m sure I would have been ‘down’ for a week judging from the deep cut which almost required stitches. Seriously. Note to self: Maybe V8 isn’t good for my health!

Anyway, so profound is myrrh’s ability to heal damaged tissues, Greek soldiers carried it into battle with them to use for skin infections and gangrene. Myrrh is a strong anti-bacterial, anti parasitic and antifungal. If you want to take it internally, you can look for herbal extracts that are used orally. Research confirms the presence of guggulsterones in myrrh which may help with cholesterol ratios, specifically by lowering

Page 27: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

27

LDL. Guggulsterones are blood thinners so be careful and do not combine with aspirin, NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), warfarin (brand Coumadin) or other blood thinners.

A Chinese test tube study published in 2013, found that “cycloartane-type triterpernoids” found in myrrh could destroy prostate cancer cells. Centuries may go by, but it’s clear that frankincense and myrrh are still a wise gift of health. One more thing, pregnant women should avoid myrrh since it’s a uterine stimulant.

OLIVEOlea europaeaGenesis 8:11, Exodus 27:20, Deuteronomy 8:8, Kings 6:32

Olive is mentioned 56 times in the Bible. Numerous passages talk about the branches of olive trees which is used to convey the universal symbol of peace. The olive leaf was brought to Noah after the great flood showing that the flood waters had abated. Olive oil was used for the burning in lamps to create light. It was used to anoint kings in honor. Olive trees were an abundant source of wood for temple buildings and beautiful architecture.

Olives and olive oil is a staple of the Mediterranean Diet. This diet is considered to be among the best diets for heart health and longevity. It has a long list of benefits with heart health, blood pressure, cholesterol, cancer risk reduction, skin health, breast health, blood sugar support, inflammation reducing, and provides highly desirable antioxidants. Simply replacing inferior dietary oils like corn, soybean, or vegetable, with extra virgin olive oil has been shown to be beneficial with overweight and obese older adults. Research found that using olive oil reduced blood pressure, improved HDL, and helped T-cell immune function.Olive leaf provides remarkable benefits for health challenges. You

can buy “olive leaf extract” if you want a natural antibiotic. Olive leaf extracts are commonly used for immune support to help defeat infections, especially in the digestive and respiratory tract. The active ingredients in olive leaf provides antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory support and even helps lower blood pressure.

The olive branch is a common symbol of bringing peace within culture and friendships, but perhaps we can use this metaphor for physiological comparison. When using olive oil and olive leaf extracts, these compounds relax the body and bring health and thus peace to an overworked, tired body.

ONIONAllium cepaNumbers 11:5

I use fresh organic onions, and dried onion powder on almost everything! They might make you cry when you cut them, but they will make you well if you eat them!

They are mentioned in the Bible several times and one occurrence comes from Numbers 11:5 “The People Complain” where it is stated:

“The rabble who were among them had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, “Who will give us meat to eat? 5”We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, 6but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this manna.”

Manna means an unexpected gratuitous meal. Anyway, onions, no

matter which variety you choose, are rich in quercetin which is a powerful antioxidant that has anti-cancer activity. Quercetin also acts like a natural antihistamine. It can raise dopamine a passion hormone, but you don’t want to do that if you have a DBH or COMT gene SNP (where dopamine might be high), or if you have elevated dopamine from some other disorder. If you have an interest in genetics, I love to study this and have the world’s first and only resource on medication-induced SNPs. You’d be shocked to learn that sulfonamides, corticosteroids, and hormone replacement drugs virtually stop the functioning of COMT. Just like garlic, onions contain allicin, which is an organic sulfur compound, not to be confused with “sulfa” which is a compound found in prescription drugs which people are sometimes allergic to. Allicin is produced naturally in onions and garlic and it keeps pests at bay.

Few spices come close to the anti-cancer power of onions. Data

from a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition was analyzed from thousands of people. There was a lot of consistency, the more onions in your diet the more protection from cancer. There is a reduced risk of colon cancer by 56 percent and reduced risk of prostate cancer by about 70 percent! Other studies done around the world have correlated a lower risk of endometrial, esophageal, kidney, oral, breast, pancreatic and stomach cancer too! SAFFRONCrocus sativusSong of Solomon 4:14

Surprisingly, saffron is mentioned in only one verse, Song of Solomon 4:14. This is the most expensive spice known to us in this day and age. It was mentioned for its stunning beauty, not medicinal benefits. One kilogram cost over ten thousand dollars! The flowers are picked and put in baskets then taken to a house where the stigmata are removed from the center of the flower.

Saffron flowers are fragrant in addition to being flashy. Farms that harvest them will discard the flowers after removing the stigmata and it is beautiful and fragrant. The stigmata are carefully dried over a charcoal fire giving them the appearance of dark red threads which are then used as a spice; prior to heating, they have very little flavor. You can just imagine eating the center of a flower. It’s the roasting that elicits the healing benefits of saffron.

Saffron is an antidepressant spice that helps with anxiety and insomnia. It contains many biologically active compounds including crocin and safranal which protect levels of dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine, just like the prescription antidepressants. Crocetin is helpful at combating Parkinson’s disease at least according to an

Page 31: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

animal experiment where the researchers found that saffron could protect the dopamine-generating brain cells and stabilize dopamine levels naturally.

Saffron contains carotenoids, including zeaxanthin, lycopene, and ß-carotene. These are important antioxidants that help protect the human body from free radical damage. These support vision as well as immune system function.

Saffron is high in minerals like copper, potassium, calcium, manganese, magnesium, iron, selenium and zinc. The profile of saffron suggests that it could help with SOD gene SNPs, where SOD stands for superoxide dismutase. Some people have a gene mutation (SNP) that prevents their SOD enzyme from working which means free radicals build up. Because saffron provides cofactors for the SOD enzyme, it could very well help people with oxidative stress, especially those with an SOD gene mutation.

SAGESalvia judaicaExodus 37:17

The 7 branched candlestick called the Menorah in Jewish history represents the 7 days of creation. It comes to us from the sage plant which thrived on the mountains and hills of Palestine. When layed flat, the sage plant has almost exactly the same form and shape as the 7 branched candlestick described thousands of years ago.

Sage extract is good for your mind, it can protect your memory and improve your mood. There are different types of sage, for example there’s an aromatic variety that Native Americans burn in smudging ceremonies. I can’t say it smells good, however, the effect is intended

to ward off evil spirits. Then there’s common sage (Salvia officinalis) and clary sage (Salvia sclarea). I like to buy fresh sage in the produce section at supermarkets and cut it into dishes like chicken, soup and meatloaf. I put it in my slow cooker when I make vegetable, bone or chicken broth.

There is some Iranian research done on patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease that proved sage “produced a significantly better outcome on cognitive functions.” Interestingly, sage was shown in lab studies to help reduce flare-ups of herpes-related viruses such as cold sores and genital herpes.

WORMWOODArtemisia absinthiumJeremiah 9:15, Revelation 8:10, Ruth 1:20

Wormwood also goes by the name Sweet Wormwood and Artemisia. It is mentioned several times in the Holy Bible. For example, in Ruth 1:20: “And the name of the star is called Wormwood.... Because of the bitter afflictions, sorrows, and distresses which it was the instrument of; just as Naomi called herself Mara, because the Almighty had dealt bitterly with her.”

Jeremiah 9:15: … and the third part of the waters became wormwood; that is, the inhabitants of the provinces and cities belonging to the Roman empire were afflicted with grievous and bitter afflictions and calamities; so great distresses are called wormwood, and waters of gall given to drink.

Wormwood is best known for its kill action, it is a strong antimicrobial, anti-fungal and antiviral agent. It’s used in infusions, powders, tables, and tinctures and extractions. Wormwood is one of the compounds in

Page 33: Medicinal Herbs From the Bible

33

Essiac tea, considered to have anti-cancer activity.

When you search wormwood by its other name, “Artemesia” it will be found on many Lyme forums and Lyme disease sites. Artemisinin is a natural component of wormwood and is a strong anti-malarial agent. It can help with parasites and Babesia infections. Many people like to use high doses of artemisinin for Babesia, a co-infection of Lyme however, this can exacerbate tinnitus in some people so if Babesia is the target pathogen, and artemesinin is causing problems you can try Sida Acuta or Cryptolepis or Alchornea Cordifolia instead. For more on Babesia, you can read my article here.
