General Information

4.0 General Information regarding UNITEST Echometers 3000

The UNITEST Echometers are measurement instru-ments for swift, easy and precise determination ofthe length of a cable or a conductor as well as forresistance measurements.

The cable length determination is carried out inaccordance with the pulse reflection procedure.

Hereby, pulses are send into a cable which "travel”at a certain velocity along the cable. If these pulseshit the cable end they are reflected and return to thestarting point.

The UNITEST Echometer 3000 calculates the cablelength on the basis of time difference between emis-sion and reception of the pulses.

If a short-circuit or an interruption is present in theconductor to be measured the digital display indi-cates the length of the conductor up to the fault lo-cation. This allows an easy and fast fault localiza-tion.

The travel time required only depends on the dis-persion velocity of the travelling pulse. In turn, thedispersion velocity is determined by the make andstructure of a cable. This means, that every cablehas a certain characteristic dispersion velocity and, thus, different travel times.

The cable characteristics saved in the Echometer(TAB range) represent a cable mean value estab-lished by the various manufacturers and ensure ap-proximate measurements. To carry out precisemeasurements, the user may calibrate the cablesupplied by a certain manufacturer and permanent-ly store the cable characteristics in the instrumentmemory for subsequent measurements (REFrange).

The UNITEST Echometer 3000 enables the mea-surement of the most conventional cable and con-ductor cross sections. Additionally, 87 freely ad-justable cable and conductor cross sections areavailable for programming and measurement.

Simply connect the instrument alligator clamps tothe ends of a cable or a conductor and set the re-spective measurement range. The conductor lengthis clearly indicated on the digital instrument display.

The built-in memory is used to save measurementresults and to transfer the data via interface to a PC.
