In a word: InspIrIng. The young-est and the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, Hawai’i Island has a vibe of vigor and intensity. Larger than all the other Hawaiian Islands combined, the island is home to one of the most con-tinuously active volcanoes on the planet. The flows from Kīlauea’s periodic release of fiery lava create the newest land on earth. Hawai‘i Island is big, but not yet done growing.

There’s plenty of room for visitors to take in this incredible diversity of terrain in uninterrupted enjoyment. Though the island is big, it’s not busy: while o‘ahu has nearly a million residents on 607 square miles, Hawai‘i Island has fewer than 200,000 residents spread out among its 4,028 square miles.

Hawaiʻi Island offers more opportuni-ties to explore Hawaiʻiʻs rich diverse cultures than any other island in the chain. From dramatic ancient stone heiau (earth terraces/shrines) and the world-renowned Merrie Monarch Hula Festival to the restored historic fishing village at Lapakahi and the futuristic ‘Imiloa astronomy Center (where exhibits explain traditional Hawaiian methods of ocean navigation by the stars), the island’s cultural wonders are both enrich-ing and abundant. research done on Hawai‘i Island also puts it under the glob-al science spotlight.

an “old Hawai’i” feeling gives charm to some of its communities. The island has a thriving arts scene and is home to Hawaiian cowboy-influenced towns. sportsmen and athletes come from around the globe to get their fix: IronMan and sport-fishing are world-re-nowned. and with some of Hawai‘i’s most magnificent courses from which to choose, some designed by the biggest names in course development, Hawai‘i Island is famous for its greens and fair-ways. Tee off on a variety of courses throughout the island and play among striking contrasts of lush green fairways, powder-white bunkers, jet-black lava flows and turquoise pacific waters.

Hawai‘i Island is a larger-than-life destina-tion for world-class meetings that’s easily accessible but far from commonplace. with breathtaking natural beauty, count-less activities for the adventurous, service distinguished by the legendary spirit of aloha, modern meeting venues and some of the world’s most sophisticated hotels and resorts, it’s no wonder the island has emerged as a favorite meeting destina-tion among planners.

Hawai‘iisland

Hawai‘i island offers stunning landscapes, from its black sand beachesand towering waterfalls to sacred sites and, of course, Hawai‘i Volcanoesnational Park. Home of the fire goddess Pele, Kīlauea Volcano is one of

the most popular attractions across the state. at present, Kīlauea, one of themost active volcanoes in the world, has two ongoing eruptions. The East

Rift Zone vents, including Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō, have been erupting since January 1983, and the summit vent, Halema‘uma‘u, has been active since March 2008.

hawaiʻi island: The experienceItineraries on Hawai‘i Island can quickly fill up with all there is to see and do. Top on many lists is Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, where a day of hiking reveals lava tubes, steam vents, craters and ancient petrogylphs. Pu‘uhonua o Hōnaunau is a sacred place of refuge. In earlier times, when death was a penalty for breaking laws, your only option to survive was to reach a puʻuhonua (place of refuge). An evening event at Hulihe‘e Palace, the summer home for Hawaiian royalty in historic Kailua Village, infuses programs with a touch of “nobility.”

Upcountry Waimea is the birthplace of paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) culture dat-ing back to 1800, with working ranches still thriving in the island’s upcountry pastures. As such, cook-outs, horseback riding and ATV adventures through the hilly fields are favorite group activities. Located along the Hāmākua Coast, ‘Akaka Falls State Park offers an easy 0.4-mile uphill hike that winds through a lush rainforest filled with wild orchids, bam-boo groves and draping ferns. A favorite among avid golfers, Hawaiʻi Island has a selection of scenic ocean and mountain view courses. Sailing, snorkeling and other watersports can be found along many of the coastal locations. Additional epicurean appeals lies in any of the great farmersʻ markets around the island, including Hilo Farmers Market.

IncentIve InspIratIonsCaptains of Their Industry Inspire attend-ees at sea with breakfast and a snorkel on a catamaran, or a full day of deep-sea fishing. Reeling in a marlin, mahimahi or ‘ahi is the ultimate adrenaline rush. “Big” Eats Groups with a taste for competi-tion can test their culinary skills with a cook-off challenge led by some of the island’s top chefs, or get a true “farm-to-table” experience by visiting farms to hand-select their own ingredients. Giddy Up Kahua Ranch offers stunning views of lush rolling hills and several on-site locations for events or time your visit to experience a Parker Ranch rodeo. Guests can explore this working ranch by ATV or on horseback. Watch the sunset and enjoy a barbecue dinner at the summit that’s perched 3,200 feet above sea level nestled in the Kohala Mountains.

It’s Natural The best team-building opportunities on Hawai‘i Island take place with Mother Nature at the helm—ziplining through tropical rainforests, waterfall hikes, outrigger canoe paddling, planting native trees, teeing up, exploring a dark lava tube and much more.

scIence In the spotlIghtHawai‘i Island is both a classroom and a teacher. With its myriad natural environ-ments, this island is the ultimate destina-tion for scientists and adventure seekers alike who can explore the wonders of astronomy, marine biology, geology and volcanology. On these topics and others, the island has wide-reaching importance and gives planners ample opportunities to infuse both incentives and meetings with incalculable inspiration.

Some say that Hawai’i Island offers the best stargazing in the world and a must-do for groups visiting the island. In Hilo, the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i is the place to go. With a 3D planetari-um, visitors learn about the connection between Native Hawaiians and the stars. Stargazing is equally impressive from the shoreline on the Kohala Coast. The clear, dark skies make for ideal conditions.

On the topic of alternate and renewable energy resources technologies, Hawai‘i Island has the potential to be an interna-tional star. The Natural Energy Laboratory

of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) gives a fas-cinating glimpse into some of them, with companies utilizing deep ocean water in ocean thermal energy conversion for renewable energy production and a vari-ety of aquaculture projects.

MeasurIng upSo much space begets plenty of room for groups to sprawl out for both business meetings and special events. Planners will find meeting and convention options that cater to groups of any size and pur-pose. With more than 7,000 rooms, the island’s varied hotels and resorts range from value-oriented to ultra-luxurious, and offer a wide array of meeting, and indoor and outdoor event space. Most resorts for groups are along the Kohala Coast, Keauhou and Kailua-Kona, with the largest indoor venue measuring more than 24,000 square feet of exhibit space.

gettIng In and gettIng aroundHawai‘i Island is accessed by two major international airports—Kona International Airport (KOA) and Hilo International Airport (ITO). Flight times from Honolulu are about 40 minutes and 50 minutes, respectively. Kona offers direct access to many mainland destinations, too, includ-ing Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix and Denver. Seasonal service is available from Anchorage, Oakland, Portland, San Jose and Vancouver.

(From top) Hawaiʻi Island visitors can experience myriad activities, from golfing at award-winning oceanside resorts and horseback riding in Waimea to ziplining and snorkeling.
