Did you know that the Sunshine Coast…
Kings Beach, Caloundra6 Meeting Planners’ Guide 2015-2016 7
is located just one hour north of Brisbane, Queensland’s capital city.
is serviced by its own airport, the Sunshine Coast Airport and is just 50 minutes from Brisbane International Airport.
is gateway to the World-Heritage listed Fraser Island, the largest sand island on the globe.
has more than 300 days of sunshine per year… lots of sunshine on this coast!
has the world’s second largest monolith, Mount Coolum. The largest is none other than the world famous Uluru.
has many towns named after aboriginal words for local flora and fauna; Caloundra (beech tree), Mooloolaba (snapper fish), Noosa (shady place) and Maroochydore (red-bill swan).
has an island once owned by Sean Connery. Mudjimba Island was owned by the suave Scot between 1962 and 1973, when he was married to Mooloolaba born actress Diane Cilento.
is home to the two largest triathlon events in Australia, Mooloolaba Triathlon and Noosa Triathlon.
was visited by Captain Cook in 1770, who whilst in the region named the Glass House Mountains, as they reminded him of the glass furnaces in his home county of Yorkshire. These magnificent rocky outcrops are actually remnants of volcanic activity that occurred 25-27 million years ago.

Virgin Australia and Jetstar offer numerous daily flights, linking the Sunshine Coast to more than 55 Australian and 125 international destinations. From Sydney, the trip takes less than 90 minutes. Air New Zealand operates daily seasonal services for those Kiwi groups that relish winter warmth.
The Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY) is centrally located, with Maroochydore 10 minutes to the south, Noosa 20 minutes to the north, and it’s surrounded by unique and exciting conference venues.
Brisbane Airport is an easy 40-minute drive from to the gateway of the Sunshine Coast – the majestic Glass House Mountains. After a few more kilometres of forest-lined highway you reach the turn off to Caloundra, the most southern tip of more than 15 coastal villages that stretch north to Noosa. Brisbane’s domestic and international terminals welcome more than 200 domestic and 40 international flights every day.
All major car rental companies have outlets at the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast terminals. For those keen to enjoy the scenery while others drive, you can access regular shuttle services and executive transfers operate door-to-door from these airports.

The Sunshine Coast has become the natural choice for businesses that provide innovative technologies, processes, products and services that measure, reduce or rectify negative environmental impacts. World-leading Sunshine Coast green technology companies provide environmental management services, sustainable building design, renewable energy, energy efficiency manufacturing, LED lighting innovation, and water harvesting, treatment and systems design.
On the back of this history, the Sunshine Coast Council is also set to become Australia’s first local government organisation to build a solar farm. The 24-hectare farm in the near hinterland will have a generating capacity of 15 megawatts which will produce enough electricity to make all of Council’s libraries, holiday parks, swimming pools, depots and other facilities self-sufficient in power. This forms part of the Council’s vision to become the most sustainable region in Australia.
The Sunshine Coast has evolved into one of Australia’s leading aerospace hubs, boasting many diverse and globally-focused companies which specialise in manufacturing, project management, charter services, mechanical design, emergency services, training and maintenance.
The Sunshine Coast Airport is also committed to the region’s sustainability pledge. It became Australia’s first accredited airport under the international Airport Carbon Accreditation program. This combined with a clear plan for the future expansion of the industry has further promoted the region’s global aviation reputation and attracted international businesses, such as Becker Helicopters Civil and Military Flight Training and Aeromil Pacific. This breadth of local expertise has also made the Sunshine Coast a natural choice for aviation, airline and aerospace-related conferences.
The Sunshine Coast hinterland retains its historic roots as a food bowl, with farm production and allied industries adding more than $300 million to the gross regional product each year.
Rich soils and favourable climatic conditions, along with plentiful water, ensure that the produce from our 900 farms is flavoursome and nutritious. So it is no wonder that the Sunshine Coast boasts a world-class food and beverage processing industry with major sectors focussing on fruit, nuts, vegetables, herbs, seafood, baked goods, dairy products and horticultural products. In addition, fresh farm produce and grass-fed meats are being married with local artisan cheeses and select local wines to create stunning group culinary experiences.

The Sunshine Coast lifestyle promotes healthy living so it is no wonder that the University of the Sunshine Coast has a research focus on improving health and health policies. This research will soon receive a shot in the arm when the new Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital opens in 2016 within the Kawana Health Campus.
The Sunshine Coast is becoming a magnet for medical innovation businesses that recognise the opportunities associated with the development of the Kawana Health Campus and the surrounding Oceanside Kawana Health Precinct. These new comers will complement the existing local leading-edge medical companies such as ProScribe. With its head office on the Sunshine Coast and two other offices in China and Japan, this company provides worldwide medical communication services to academic, biotech and pharmaceutical businesses.
One in five Sunshine Coast residents works in tourism or a related sector, so it is no wonder that the region continues to be a tourism trailblazer. With a plethora of accommodation options, attractions, tours and natural activity options, tourists and those seeking leisurely pursuits will find that their desires can be fulfilled.
The pleasant climate, endless sunshine and state-of-the-art aquatic centres, sporting grounds, surf lifesaving clubs and an Olympic rowing course also makes the region a haven for sports lovers. This helps explain why each year tens of thousands of visitors attend international events such as Ironman 70.3, the Noosa Triathlon and Mooloolaba Triathlon. This breadth of product and forward focus means the Sunshine Coast is a paradise for conference organisers looking for somewhere special to host their tourism, sports or leisure-related conference.
The Sunshine Coast is the home of a vast range of new technology and knowledge-based companies. This played a part in the Sunshine Coast being named as one of the world’s Smart21 Communities by the international Intelligent Communities Forum, based in New York.
The region is now globally acclaimed for our growing Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry capability and support network, and embracing broadband technology and digital innovation to deliver economic benefit. These optimal conditions help attract an ever-growing number of specialist ICT and knowledge industry businesses to the Sunshine Coast who are ready to champion our region for its natural advantages.
Spotlight on: Oceanside Kawana Health Precinct
The Oceanside Kawana Health Precinct is the largest infrastructure project to be implemented in the Sunshine Coast region.
At its core the 20-hectare site will encapsulate the 450-bed Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital, the USC Skills, Academic and Research Centre (SARC), and the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital that opened in late 2013.

Why Sunshine Coast?
Sunshine Coast villages and towns are enshrined in nature. The region’s nine national parks and UNESCO Biosphere boast one third of Australia’s bird species, more than 150 rare or endangered species, and unspoilt wetlands, rainforests and coastal heath.
Being enveloped in nature allows for an abundance of nature-based activities. Water pursuits include surfing, sailing, kayaking, jet boating and dinner cruises. For land lovers, there is everything from farm-gate tours, seaside cycling, hinterland hikes and champion golf courses to shopping and day spas.
Waterside parks, al fresco eateries, mountain-top vineyards, botanic ampitheatres and beach
‘ballrooms’ transform into nature-encased off-site venues, each offering a quintessential Queensland experience.
Add to this mix accredited tour companies eager to show delegates some rarely accessed sites, then you’ll see why the Sunshine Coast offers a privileged glimpse into nature’s playground.

The Sunshine Coast name says it all. With an average of seven hours of sunshine daily and more than 300 days of sunshine each year, you can bask in rays here more than almost anywhere else on earth – and that’s official.
This sub-tropical paradise translates into mild winter months, warm autumns and springs, and summer days soaked in sun. This enviable climate sees each season blend seamlessly into the next with temperatures hovering between 15 and 26 degrees. Enjoying endless blue skies and gentle sea breezes, visitors can’t help but relax into the soothing pace of the Sunshine Coast lifestyle.

The Sunshine Coast is a progressive, think-outside-the-box region that attracts residents and visitors who revel in the knowledge that they’ve chosen a destination that is smart about managing its abundant natural resources. Living in one of the most naturally beautiful places on the planet comes with a certain responsibility, taking great care to protect the environment.
In support of this aim, the Sunshine Coast rallied behind the establishment of the Noosa Biosphere. The biosphere is committed to innovative approaches to conservation and sustainable development.
The region has also committed to attracting cleantech and renewable energy businesses. These companies provide innovative solutions that work to simultaneously protect and promote the region’s – and the world’s - ecosystems, resources and values.
With an army of volunteers acting as custodians of our clean and green environment, the future of the Sunshine Coast is guaranteed to be environmentally and economically successful.
A natural food bowl, the Sunshine Coast is fast becoming Queensland’s favourite taste destination. We boast a strong agriculture sector, internationally-acclaimed seafood, and university researchers who are playing an ever-burgeoning role in Australia’s farming future.
With this earth and sea foundation as our backbone, the Sunshine Coast offers a bounty of foodie adventures, tasty attractions and gourmet experiences. It all starts with the rich volcanic soil, sun-filled days and ideal rainfall that provide the perfect balance for more than 500 food and beverage producers that call the Sunshine Coast home.
Their fresh, delicious produce is lovingly tended and nurtured until it grows and blossoms to be showcased through the region’s award-winning restaurants, fabulous food and farmer’s markets, nationally renowned food festivals, and fun cooking schools.
Food lovers also flock to the touring opportunities, which include exciting food trails, hinterland vineyards, and paddock-to-plate and trawler-to-table dining experiences.

Crackling Candle CoFig and cassis. French pear. Lavender, cucumber and sage. While these ‘tasty’ combinations would be well suited to the brunch table, there are also ingenious all-natural soy wax triple scented candle frgrances from a Sunshine Coast local with one eye on creativity and the other on sustainability.
Being a candle lover and discovering there wasn’t an Australian company that made solely wooden wick candles, Nadine Clark decided to make them herself. Using 100% natural biodegradable soy wax, this is a safe and eco-friendly Australian product.
From little things big things grow, and now the business individually hand pours candles for discerning individuals, day spas, corporate groups, weddings and gift shops. Perfect for stashing into luggage as a Sunshine Coast keepsake.
Australian Nougat CompanyIt was more than 20 years ago that Baron Micholas Josika and his wife, wondered how they could marry their European love of food with Queensland’s iconic macadamia nut. The solution was melt-in-your-mouth French-style, all natural nougat made by hand.
The Australian Nougat Company, located amidst lush rolling hills in the Noosa hinterland, has 13 flavours featuring macadamia nuts sourced from local plantations.
Free of artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, the gluten-free smooth, soft nougat has become one of the all-time favourite takeaways from the Sunshine Coast. Factory visits with free tastings are a fabulous group activity. Our tip: Buy some delicious cranberry and macadamia for your colleagues and loved ones because the immensely popular chocolate, cherry and macadamia is simply too good to share!
D’licious Gourmet HampersShare a tantalizing taste of the Sunshine Coast’s finest quality, locally-produced delicacies. Only the most quintessentially Queensland local products are chosen by husband and wife team, Ray and Irene, to showcase the Sunshine Coast’s more than 500 producers. Each beautifully packaged hamper includes boutique and internationally-renowned local flavours.
Popular choices for inclusion are, Fat Hen Farm dukkah and olive tapenades, Sunshine Coast Brewery beers, Soul Tea unique blends, Partner Foods roasted chickpeas, Hinterland Feijoas jams and jellys, Sweet Tempered Chocolateria truffles and much more. D’licious Gourmet Hampers make ideal speaker and sponsor gifts, with delivery available to hotels and venues.
NutworksMacadamias are big on the Sunshine Coast. In fact, the region is the epi-centre of Australia’s macadamia industry and home to some of the largest nut farms in the southern hemisphere. So it’s no wonder that we also boast Australia’s best macadamia processor, Nutworks. Taking raw kernels straight from our farms, Nutworks roasts the nuts and transforms them into delectable delicacies.
Grab macadamias in flavours that include hickory, wasabi, honey-roasted and chocolate. The Nutworks’ Tourism Range has been designed for the specific needs of international visitors who want to take a slice of Queensland home. The onsite and online shop also features macadamia oils and cosmetics for event organisers looking for something completely different.
The Ginger Factory Did you know that historians believe that gingerbread men were first baked in the kitchens of Queen Elizabeth 1, who loved offering the then-exotic sweet to foreign diplomats? The allure of this aromatic root has not diminished over 500 years. Ginger is eaten in almost every country across the globe and the Sunshine Coast boasts the world’s largest ginger factory.
Within the Ginger Factory’s nine-hectare grounds you’ll also find a significant tourist attraction, specialty retail outlets, educational tours, glorious gardens, ornamental flowering Ginger and Heliconia plants, dining options, as well as a sizeable shop that sells everything ginger. There’s ginger tea, marmalade, perfumes, cosmetics, tenderisers, toppings - even spiced ginger for sushi! For those who are a little ‘ginger’ about buying food gifts, the shop abounds in gardening gadgets and kitchen kitsch.

Spotlight on: Saya Skin
When Saya McDermott started her natural skincare business a decade ago from her parents’ kitchen, she was hoping for a few compliments. What she received were rave reviews, and Saya knew she was on to something! This humble ‘accidental entrepreneur’ now oversees a warehouse and retail space in the heart of Noosa where her commitment to quality still shines through.
The Saya Skincare range has much in common with the Sunshine Coast’s naturally refreshing dictum – the all-natural products feature individually-sourced ingredients and have no nasty toxins, sulphates, parabens or synthetic colouring. Saya’s dedication goes so far as having the products poured by hand and showcased through uber chic labelling. The range has everything from a goat’s milk soap to men’s shaving cream and face serums. Our pick is the Essentials Travel Pack, which makes a fantastic room drop or farewell gift.

Spotlight on: Terri Irwin
People who answer a calling often claim that they were born with an unyielding passion – a commitment to a cause that influenced their every thought and action.
Growing up in Eugene, Oregon, one imagines that’s how life must have been for the young Theresa Raines. Better known today as Terri Irwin, as a young girl she cared for and rehabilitated injured animals that her father brought home during his truck-driving travels.
By the time she was 22, Terri had already created her own animal rehabilitation facility called Cougar Country. Five years later, while researching wildlife rehabilitation facilities in Australia, Terri encountered a lovable larrikin named Steve Irwin at Australia Zoo. We have watched her become a wife, a mother, and a successful businesswoman. Under her stewardship, Australia Zoo has grown over the years to become a world-class attraction and respected wildlife sanctuary.
Together with children Bindi and Robert, Terri continues to build on her late husband Steve’s incredible legacy.

You and your delegates can enjoy more than 40 public spaces that have been identified as ‘event ready’ by local Councils. Imagine a cocktail party at the foot of a lighthouse, a parkland breakfast surrounded by lorikeets and rosellas, a water’s edge dinner or a barefoot beach ball. It’s all possible on the Sunshine Coast.
Each location is easy to access and within half an hour of one of the Sunshine Coast’s major centres.
The facilities available at each location differ, with some coastal parks offering restrooms and electricity. In keeping with the region’s naturally refreshing mantra, other spaces are unspoilt clearings where all services and facilities must be arranged. Business Events Sunshine Coast members can arrange everything for you, making it easy to have your event in a unique location.
Going offsite
The Sunshine Coast offers ‘anywhere events’. Hold one of your functions in a magnificent, unmatched unique location. The same stunning beach, foreshore, and park spaces for which the region is famous, can also be incorporated into your social program.

View from Cotton Tree Park
Noosa’s world famous beach and adjacent Noosa Woods parkland offer perfect offsite options at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast. One of only three north facing beaches on Australia’s east coast, Main Beach brims with dolphins as the late afternoon sky fills with the pinks, mauves and peach colours of dusk. This is the perfect location from which to drink in cocktails and the sunset while wriggling your toes in the warm sand.
Less than 100 metres from Hastings Street is Noosa Woods parkland, a water’s edge park with sandy foreshore and large trees ideal for a marquee dinner. From this waterside location guests can watch night lights twinkle across the tranquil Noosa River.

Spotlight on: Queensland Signature Events
The Sunshine Coast has a bounty of iconic natural settings that had long been purely the domain of leisure travellers. All that changed when one events devotee investigated how business visitors could enjoy the same spectacular scenery.
Born from the knowledge that conference delegates want to experience the region, Liz Rivers launched Queensland Signature Events after three years’ planning and local government liaison.
Together with her crew and premier supply partners, Liz now turns unique places and spaces throughout the Sunshine Coast into stunning venues. Beaches, waterside reserves, rainforests, heritage buildings and parklands are all being transformed with creative flair.
Guests enjoy a premium experience regardless of whether they attend a barefoot beach ball, a dusk cocktail party overlooking sun-drenched waterways, a silver-service breakfast at a lighthouse, or an operatic evening in a rainforest clearing.
Queensland Signature Events manage everything needed for these premium marquee and open-air events, and provide all-inclusive packages priced per person. Budgeting has become a breeze, giving you the personal gift of time. All that is left to do is relax!

Australia’s leading chefs and restaurateurs have been drawn to the Sunshine Coast for the opportunity to live and work in a vibrant, creative community which provides both a stimulating work environment and access to an abundance of fresh, locally grown and produced ingredients.
Exclusive use restaurants Spotlight on: Wasabi Restaurant and Bar
Many restaurants in Japan create menus that predominantly use ingredients that can only be sourced from the immediate area. Noosa’s Wasabi is determined to stay true to these historic links.
The menu showcases seasonal produce from their Honeysuckle Hill farm, other regional ingredients and the amazing array of daily seafood caught by the local fishing fleet. This may go part way to explaining why Wasbai is recognised by Gourmet Traveller as Australia’s number one Japanese restaurant and has been named by The Australian as Queensland’s ‘hottest’ restaurant. Offering contemporary flare with Japanese accents, this Noosa riverside restaurant is the perfect setting for a bespoke business event.
Across the region, the choice is yours… on Noosa beachfront, at the water’s edge at Maroochydore, on Pumicestone Passage, along Noosa River, high in the hinterland, in an Asian-inspired bamboo wonderland, and on Mooloolaba Spit. Each restaurant offers
something special for groups. There are also offsite function venues at some of the region’s most beloved tourist attractions.
