IT SEEMS THAT NEARLY EVERYWHERE I TURN
these days, there’s something about
New Orleans either in print, on televi-
sion, or online that catches my eye and
ear, as if to keep me aligned with and
revved up for UAC 2012. Even Wheel ofFortune (one of my guilty pleasures)
beamed two weeks of shows this past
May from the Big Easy. (Aren’t ALL
astrologers Wheel Watchers in one form or
another?)
Each of Wheel’s broadcasts featured
breath-taking Bourbon Street scenery, and
one sumptuous Five Star NOLA restaurant
after another, which served up a signature
dish for Pat and Vanna at each show’s
finale. Most exceptional, was the restau-
rant “Stella!” (presumably named after
Brando’s primal scream in A StreetcarNamed Desire), and when P & V were
presented the delectable Miso and Sake
Glazed Japanese Mero Sea Bass withUdon, Green Tea and Soba Noodles, I
nearly dropped everything that second
and booked the next flight down!
But for now, I’m counting the days to
May 2012 when I will be initiated into the
land of Hot Jazz and Bananas Foster, as I
meet up with 1500 of my fellow astrologers
from around the world at the Marriot Hotel
in New Orleans. Appropriately enough,
Ceres, Vesta, and Jupiter will be
languishing in Taurus for our week-long
conference, hinting that the sensualaspect of our shared experience promises
to be just as thrilling and memorable as
the astrological cornucopia that will be
served up by nearly 175 of astrology’s
best and brightest from around the world.
(See p. 3 for a complete list of UACspeakers.)
Current early registration prices for the
conference (weekly and daily rates) are
good through September 15, 2011 and
can be found on www.uacastrology.com.
Members of the four sponsoring organiza-
tions (ACVA/CVA, AFAN, ISAR, NCGR),
receive a discount, so if you have not
done so already, please consider joining
one or all (a triple membership package is
being offered for newbies). Do take
advantage of these reduced rates now as
prices will go up in the fall.
In addition to the 15 tracks, 300 plus
classes, workshops, pre- and post-
conference panels and events (Michael
Lutin and company are on board with an
ALL NEW entertainment extravaganza
guaranteed to knock our socks off!), the
full schedule of speakers and events is on
the website and the brochure can be
found at www.uacastrology.com/
2012UAC_brochure_final1.pdf).

Dear Members,
AS URANUS BOLTS HIS WAY INTO ARIES, and Neptune begins His slide intoPisces, we see the magnitude of their manifestations in the tragedies anddramas of recent world events. Life is always uncertain, but more often
than not, we can live in a little denial of that. These days, however, it is hard toignore the uncertainty that surrounds all of us and is in each of us. But, we, in theastrological community have so much to be grateful for, not only because we haveour symbols to decode the meaning in such events, but also in a more personal way, these gods are bringing favor to our community.
Many thanks go to Meira Epstein who is working tirelessly to convert our databaseto a more streamlined, economical, and effective system. Our good fortune is thatMeira is the best of both worlds—a crackerjack astrologer as well as a computerbrain—not to mention, a very long term and generous member of NCGR. She isworking closely with our terrific webmaster, Ken Irving, and I think in the weeks tocome you will find our website to be more user-friendly. So, I hope you will use it!
Also, NCGR has joined forces with ISAR and AFAN in the Astrological NewsService (ANS). We hope it will promote a more professional image of astrology tothe media in a consistent way, not just when planets are demoted and new signs arediscovered. Our Membership Secretary, Mark Wolz, will serve on the ANS PublishersBoard, and our Publicity Director, Frank Piechoski, will represent us on the ANSEditorial Board along with Stephanie Gailing, a member from Seattle, and we arevery excited to have her fresh perspective. Thanks to all three of them.
Demetrius Bagley, our new Media and Communications Director, is continuing toreview our lectures archive inventory, while also developing sales tools for them.He is still seeking volunteer Tweeters too, so feel free to contact him through ourwebsite.
We hope you have already visited the UAC website. In fact, we hope you havealready registered for UAC! If not, please go to www.uacastrology.com and take alook at the exciting program. If you would like to extend your stay at UAC, our pre-conference workshops and events are sure to be worth your while. Bruce Scofield, always an interesting and informative speaker, is presenting 2012 & the MayanCalendar. Frank Piechoski is speaking on Presentational Skills for Astrologers. AndThe Living History of New Orleans is part walking tour and part astrology lesson andall fun. Registration can be made through our website. NCGR-PAA also ispresenting a pre-conference panel presentation The Practice & Profession of Astrology. Please visit its website, www.astrologersalliance.org, for details and registration.
We hope you will take more than a passing look at the announcement in thisMemberletter from Jagdish Maheshri calling for articles for the next Research Journal. The topic is The Modern Planets. It’s his initial journal as Research Director and weare very enthusiastic to have him on the Board.
We also apologize for the delay in getting Geocosmic News to you. During itsproduction, our editor, Leigh Westin, had some family responsibilities that had totake priority over her task as Chapter Affairs Director and Geocosmic Journal Editor. In the meantime, we are thankful to Loretta Lopez for her generous contribution onthat journal, but we’re also glad to say Leigh is back on the job and you should haveyour copy imminently. Thanks for your patience and understanding, and we think itwill be worth the wait! And of course, always consider purchasing some of our olderjournals with timeless articles by leading astrologers and generous members

JOANNA SHANNON AND JULIAN ARMISTEAD WERE GREAT FORCES behind the certification
process and prominent members of the astrological community in the New York City
Chapter of NCGR. She was Education Chair and President for many years, and he sat
as Vice President for just as many years.
To honor the memory of their service to the community and their contribution to
astrological education, as well as to encourage education and service from up and
coming astrologers, their estates are creating a scholarship in their names. Once a year,
$1000 will be awarded to an astrologer or student who is a member of NCGR and in the
process of becoming certified by NCGR-PAA.
The requirement is simply to write an essay of no more than 2000 words, including
your credentials, your experience in astrological education and service to the astro-
logical community thus far, your aims in your work with astrology, and how the schol-
arship would help you in your study of astrology. The scholarship can be used for
anything that will facilitate the winner’s study, i.e., books, computer software, classes,
conferences, etc. That will be at the winner’s discretion. Finally, at the end of the year,
the winner should submit a brief essay evaluating his or her experience of that year’s
study and service.
Submissions should be made to John Marchesella in a Word document via email to
[email protected] by June 30, 2011, and he, in turn, will submit the candidates
to the NCGR Board. The winner will be selected by the NCGR Board and announced in
the September-October memberletter.

WHAT IF THE U.S. MOON ISN’T IN
Aquarius? Could the U.S. chart
have Libra rising? With Saturn at the
Ascendant? How would an 11° Cancer
Sun resonate through the history of the
United States?
Raise an eyebrow and give these ques-
tions good thought by reading Julian
Armistead’s monograph The Second ofJuly 1776: The Birth Chart of the UnitedStates of America published in 1998 by
the Education Department of NCGR. It’s
yours for free with your 2011 NCGR
membership renewal.
Does the chart make history, or does his-
tory make the chart? While we doubt the
USA will adjust the date for Independence
Day, perhaps astrologers will make a shift in
their outlook on events, past and future, as
well as the character of the nation.
Starting from the historical information
that the Continental Congress passed its
Resolution for Independence on July 2,
1776, Julian Armistead explored such
questions in the research project he
presented for his NCGR Professional
Certification in Research.
of our community. You can see thosejournals in addition to many digitallecture recordings on our website www.geocosmic.org.
Please consider, too, renewing your duesbetween July 2-September 2 in order toreceive, free of charge, The Second of July1776: The Birth Chart of the United Statesof America by Julian Armistead. This isa terrific piece of astrological research, which won him his certificate as aResearch Astrologer from NCGR-PAA(see above for further details).
Until the next time, may the gods be withyou!
Now you can join in that inquiry by
renewing for 2011. Go to the NCGR
website, www.geocosmic.org, and click
on Join NCGR Here. You can renew for a
year at any time, not just when your
membership is expiring. If you renew
between July 2-September 2, 2011, we’ll
send you the full 48-page monograph in
PDF form.
In other words, even if your membership
dues do not need to be renewed until the
end of 2011, or even in early 2012, you can
renew now and extend your membership
from your usual expiration date...and receive
this thought-provoking monograph.
Written in scholarly detail with Uranian
techniques as well as in traditional
astrology, Julian interprets many major
historical events against this new chart.
He also includes his historical research
along with the astrological interpretation
of the natal horoscope.
The monograph is a great lesson in
mundane astrology at work, whether or
not you agree with the chart, and it's an
excellent example of astrological research,
insight and open-mindedness.

IN THIS ESSAY I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE with
you some of the astrological signatures
that explain the terrible Earthquake-
Tsunami that took place last March 11,
2011 in Sendai, Japan.
First, it is important to take into account
that while it is possible to give an astro-
logical explanation about why the earth-
quake occurred based on the efforts of
many national and international astrolo-
gers, it is totally impossible to astrologi-
cally predict when an earthquake or a
tsunami will occur. This is God’s will and
something that He has decided to keep to
himself.
On the other hand, we Chilangos (Chi-langos is a common name for México City
inhabitants) know that our land, México
City, is an earthquake land and nobody can
tell us when or how big the next one will be.
Nevertheless through our knowledge of
science and physics as well as logic we
know that México City is in an earthquake
zone, so it is better that we be physically,
mentally and emotionally ready so that
when a situation like this happens, we will
be able to react in the best possible way.
Main Astrological Signatures for
the Sendai Earthquake (Fig. 1)The following are the most important
points that are shown in this astrological
study of this natural disaster. Certainly
there may be more astrological events that
can explain this event, but in my opinion
these are the most important ones.
The earthquake in Sendai Japan took
place on March 11, 2011, 2:46:23 PM,
Sendai Japan, 38N15, 140E53, which
gives us an Ascendant of 16° Leo 31’, and
in which we can observe the following:
The 8th house (crisis and regeneration) is
strongly emphasized with the Sun, ruler
of the chart, Mars, Uranus and Mercury
all positioned there. This shows a large
crisis, with all the strength of
these four powerful planets
looking to show their
maximum expression. With
the chart ruler (Sun) and the
ruler of the 2nd house
(Mercury) both in the 8th
house, we could also think
of this as a huge debt
problem, or a problem that
would cause a huge national
debt. Uranus at 29° Pisces
57’ in the 8th house, is ready
to enter Aries with unex-
pected and dramatic changes,
which will bring pain and
crisis.
Fig. 2. Chart of Japan
Post-War IndependenceThe chart for Japan is drawn
according to the date and
time of the official restora-tion of Japanese indepen-dence and sovereignty, at themoment that peace was dec-lared between Japan and theUSA (Nicholas Campion, TheBook of World Horoscopes,
Bournemouth: Wessex Astro-
loger, 2004, p 175).
At the time of the earthquake,
the chart was drastically
activated by planets and lunar
nodes in the earthquake chart:
The Lunar Nodes in transit
formed an exact conjunction
with the natal Moon, which
shows an inevitable destiny
that the Japanese people were
going to live through. The
January 4, 2011 Solar (New
Moon) eclipse, which oc-
curred at 13° Capricorn 39’
conjoins Japan’s natal Chiron
in the 1st house, which brings
out Japan’s vulnerability. At

the same time this Eclipse
makes an opposition to
Japan’s natal Uranus pro-
moting many unexpected
changes, and provoking a
great lack of control.
The progressed Moon at
19° Leo 18’ Leo makes an
exact conjunction with
progressed Pluto at 19° Leo
47’ Leo and with natal Pluto
at 19° Leo 5° retrograde in
the 8th house. Transiting
Pluto in the earthquake
chart (7° Capricorn 17’)
makes a conjunction (1°
orb) with Mars directed by
solar arc (8° 04’ Capricorn).
Transiting Uranus is 0°
Aries 03’ on the day of the
eclipse, having just passed
into that sign, and makes
an exact square to the
Ascendant-Descendant
axis, indicating an immedi-
ate and unexpected change
in Japan. Transiting Sun
makes a square (1° orb)
with Solar Arc Venus
(which rules the 8th house
of death) if you direct the
8th house cusp in the Solar
Arc directed. Transiting
Jupiter makes a square with
Natal Uranus, awakening
the country’s changes.
Fig. 3. Capricorn
Ingress ChartThe North Node of the
Ingress chart calculated for
Tokyo, Japan, conjoins the
Ascendant of Japan’s
chart. Rahu (North Node),
Pluto, Mars and Ceres, all
significators of big
changes, losses, violence,
etc. are in the 12th house in
the Ingress Chart, and they
all oppose the Moon,
reflecting big fears of
losses and crises that the
Japanese people will live
through. Uranus conjoins
Jupiter (both in the 2nd
house), making a close
square to Mercury, ruler of
the 8th house. Again we
have the same theme; a great (Jupiter)
surprise (Uranus) involved with many
deaths and crisis (8th house), as well as a
big economic problem about to come (2nd
and 8th houses). Saturn, the ascendant
ruler, is in the 8th house, and is the focal
point of a t-square with the Moon and
Mars. This is the moment of the total
restructuring of Japan.
Fig. 4. New Moon.It is surprising to see the 1st house
stellium in Pisces, which reflects the
importance of the month for Japan. The
Pisces Ascendant and its ruler Jupiter in
Aries makes a close square to Pluto,
reflecting the intense transformations that
Japan will live through, and with Chiron in
the Ascendant we observe, again, the
country’s vulnerability. Uranus is making
a square to the Lunar Nodes, which
indicates the fateful and terrible surprise
that Japan suffered. Mars in the Ascen-
dant is making an exact sextile to Pluto,
which indicates the strength and fortitude
with which Japan is dealing in these very
difficult times.
On March 11, the day of the earthquake,
the lunation degree of 13° Pisces 55’ was
activated by transiting Mars at 12° Pisces
46’. The transiting Sun (from the Earth-
quake chart) conjoins Mercury of the
lunation chart, which rules the 4th house
(the people and the land).
Fig. 5. Naoto Kan becomes
Japan’s 94th Prime MinisterIn general we could say this chart shows
that during Mr. Kan’s term as Japan’s
Prime Minister, the country will live
through huge transformations. I believe
this because the chart shows major
astrological difficulties: two t-squares; the
strongest one with Pluto as a focal point
between Saturn and the Jupiter-Uranus
conjunction, and the other one with
Mercury as the focal point making a
square with Mars and with Neptune, and
the Sun in the 8th house making a square
to the Moon. On March 11, 2011, the day
of the earthquake, this chart was activated
in various ways:
Transiting Uranus at 29° Pisces 57’ is
about to exactly conjoin Uranus in the
chart for June 4, 2010 when the Prime
Minister took office (Uranus at 0° Aries’).
Each transiting lunar node makes one

@square to Jupiter and another to Saturn,
which creates a Grand Cross, increasing
the moment’s tension. Transiting Moon
makes an exact square with Chiron,
bringing up the vulnerability and pain that
has already been expressed in this chart.
Transiting Mars makes a square to the
Sun in the Prime Minister’s Election chart,
indicating the moment when the authority
should act. Transiting Mercury makes a
square with Pluto in the Prime Minister’s
election chart, awakening the huge
transformation that Japan will live through
in this period of its history.
The July 11, 2010 Solar (New Moon)
Eclipse that took place at 19° Cancer 24’,
conjoins Venus (ruler of the chart) within a
1° orb, indicating substantial and inevi-
table changes for the country. The January
4, 2011 Solar (New Moon) Eclipse at 13°
Capricorn 39’ conjoins the North Node,
showing that big events will come soon.
Fig. 6. Naoto Kan’s Natal Chart.Naoto Kan, Japan’s Prime Minister was
born October 10, 1946. 7:40 AM, Ube
Japan. (It must be noted that the birth time
is not completely reliable.)
Mr. Kan’s natal Sun is currently stressed
out, which reflects that this is his moment
to center himself and to take assertive
actions in a personal way as well as the
nation’s leader. Transiting Saturn in the
Earthquake chart conjoins his Sun, and
the last two Solar Eclipses of July 11, 2010
at 19° Cancer 24’, and January 4, 2011 at
13° Capricorn 39’, squared the Sun as well,
and transiting Mercury (ruler of the 8th
house) activated his natal chart when it
conjoined the natal Moon.
On the other hand, transiting Sun on the
day of the earthquake at 20° Pisces 18’
acted as the focal point of a t-square
between the Progressed Sun at 20°
Sagittarius 44’ and the midpoint between
the natal Vertex and natal Uranus (if the
birth time is accurate, if not then only
Uranus). Progressed Mercury (ruler of the
natal 8th house) just changed signs (0°
Sagittarius 26’). Transiting Saturn con-
joins Solar Arc Pluto, and transiting Pluto
makes an exact conjunction to Solar Arc
Jupiter, Mercury, and the Ascendant
(which shows that probably we have his
accurate birth time). All these aspects tell
us that this is the moment for Mr. Kan to
act, and what a way to do it!
ConclusionsAs expected, all the related charts with the
events are strongly activated by various
planets, especially Pluto, and also by the
Lunar Nodes and the Eclipses. All of these
aspects show great destruction and pain.
As we have seen, it is easy to explain
Japan’s tragedy, but the fact that we can
express it intellectually and astrologically
doesn’t diminish the pain and suffering
the Japanese people are suffering right
now. On a smaller scale, the world in
general, due to what has been written,
needs to show greater solidarity with the
people of Japan, especially those who
have suffered such great losses.
In closing, I would like to say to all the
readers of this article that it is impossible
to know in advance the exact moment a
natural disaster such as an earthquake will
destroy a city. The best advice is to
prepare yourself physically, mentally, and
emotionally for that moment whether you
live in México City or anywhere else that
is highly susceptible to earthquakes.

WE’VE HAD A BUNDLE OF PLANETS
that entered tropical Aries in the
last few months: Jupiter on
January 23, the Moon on March 6 and
again on April 3 (of course the Moon
enters Aries once a month), Mercury on
March 10, Uranus on March 12, the Sun
on March 21, Mars on April 4, and Venus
on April 21. The Moon, which enters Aries
once a month did so Of course, the Sun’s
entry on March 21st is an important time
for traditional Western astrologers
because it is the Sun’s position on the
vernal equinox that establishes the
boundaries of all the signs in the Zodiac.
The Sun’s entry into Aries is the
beginning of the astrological year.
And, of course, new beginnings are an
essential part of the Aries energy. One
wants to say I can make a difference inthis world, and I’m going to startby…(fill in the blanks.) It wouldn’t be
unwar-ranted to point out that the many
recent uprisings in the Arab world (the
Jasmine Revolution as some call it) reflect
this start all over again attitude. Not

of Aries, the impatience, and the tendency
toward single-mindedness that can
obscure the ability to see clearly. That’s
where the with love addition becomes
important. It is quite possible to act with
resolution while understanding where an
opponent is coming from. Because you
know in your heart what is right.
So there it is—the Arian paradox—you
feel the need to act, but you don’t want to
act rashly, but if you don’t act at all
nothing will change, so you look in your
heart and hope that what it’s telling you is
the truth. This push and pull is especially
poignant with the Saturn energy in Aries’
opposite sign, Libra. Saturn represents the
need for discipline, so it’s not hard to see
that all this truth-speaking is going to
have to be followed not only by a
willingness to stick to the initiating
principles of the Aries energy, but by the
equally important act of doing unto others
what you would have them do unto you.
It will be interesting to watch govern-
ments reform themselves. We can hope
that a discipline emerges from the chaos.
Like all things Arian, it takes a lot of
courage to speak your truth; however,
that bravery pales in comparison to what
it takes to speak your truth with love. For
example, suppose you are a woman in
Afghanistan and you have been meeting
secretly with other women to talk about
the problems of living in a male-dominated
society. The dangers of speaking your
truth are real and physical. The fear of
retribution causes you to feel anger
toward men. It would take a tremendous
amount of courage to come to the aid of
another woman who had received a
beating at her husband’s hands. But what
courage would it take to purge yourself of
the anger and act from the understanding
that these men are behaving from a fear
of their own. This extra level of motivation
is almost impossible to achieve in such
circumstances, but it is closer to the real
truth of the situation. Only special
people like Gandhi manage to attain this
level of action, but we all know that in

surprising that Aries is the sign of war and
the bravery it takes to be a soldier. Aries
also represents courage in all its forms,
not just in battle. Risk is inherent in
everything Arian. There is also an
impatience in the energy of Aries, which
takes its toll on the status quo.
You can even see this impatience in the
political climate of the United States—
especially with the consistent anti-
government fervor. Incumbent congress-
persons (Wikipedia says this is a word)
are reeling with the displeasure of many
constituents. Whether justified or not, it is
not an easy time to be in the government.
This, of course, is a continuation of the
Pluto (eruption) in Capricorn (govern-
ment) energy that has been in our Earth-
Energy space, off and on, since early 2008.
Aries energy squares the Capricorn
energy, making it intense.
The energies of Sun, Moon, Mercury,
Mars, Venus, and even Jupiter in Aries are
not especially long-lasting. All will have
moved on to other signs by mid-June. But
Uranus in Aries is with us for seven years.
Uranus always gives us a deeper
awareness or consciousness. And these
entries all represent a shift in element. The
Pisces-to-Aries transition takes us from
the water of the sea (and its consequent
emotional connection to all things) to the
fire-dry land (and its connection to
action).
From the feelings of suffering experienced
by North Africans and shared with social
networking, comes the need to act ie. the
I’m not going to take it any more anger of
whole nations. What Uranus in Aries says
is speak your truth. And the people I hang
out with often say Speak your truth “withlove,” but the love is very hard to see
when you have suffered long.
This human dilemma—the need to act in
the face of perceived (or real) danger—is
the essence of Aries energy. Courage
comes in many forms. But it is also
important to understand the shadow side
page 10
the final analysis he was right in some
important way. We know what was meant
when Jesus said Forgive them, Lord, forthey know not what they do.
I suspect that in Afghanistan there will be
some true martyrs among the women there
before their injustices are turned around,
and probably there already are some. But
such action does not just happen one day,
I suspect. I may never know if I’m capable
of such action, but I remember in my own
youth, how I spent years listening to my
father tell jokes about different groups,
using ethnic and racial slurs. I would
laugh because everyone else was
laughing, but I also felt uneasy. Later,
when I went to an all-male boarding
school, there were no black or Hispanic
faces, and I was actually subtly shunned
by some of the kids because I roomed
with a Jewish boy in my senior year. It
certainly felt good to ignore them.
When I went away to college at McGill
University in Montreal, I had roommates
from the wilds of Quebec, the Island of
Mauritius, and from Hong Kong. McGill
was cosmopolitan, and I loved it. I couldno longer put up with my father’s and
older brother’s jokes, so I grew a beard as
a kind of protest (this was after all the
1960s). My father and brother said I would
not be welcome at home unless I shaved it
off, and at my mother’s pleading, I
capitulated.
Two years later, when I had my first job as
a teacher, I grew the beard back and have
had it ever since. It is only in the past few
years that I have lost the anger that was
so palpable during those years. I can truly
say that I love my brother now, even
though I am not so foolish as to bring up
certain subjects with him. My father died
when I was 29, but I have been working
with his spirit in my heart and have found
a way to love that spirit.
We are so fortunate in this country that
speaking our truth is not generally a
matter of risking our lives. I am proud of
the way we are challenging the Don’t ask, don’t tell policy in our military. I think that
our sexual orientation should have
nothing to do with how we are treated in
our workplace, and it will take years for
this truth to be realized.
Death of Mike MonsoorI want to mention another Arian discovery
that I made recently. My brother sent me
an email about the bravery of a Navy
SEAL named Mike Monsoor. As I usually
do, I checked the story out with
snopes.com, and most of the story was
true. Mike had been given the Medal of
Honor for his act of falling on a live gren-
ade to save the lives of comrades who
were with him on a rooftop in Iraq in 2006.
The grenade killed him and the award
came posthumously. It turns out he had
also been awarded the Silver and Bronze
Stars for two previous acts of bravery. As
you good astrologers might have
guessed, he was an Aries by birth. Accor-
ding to Wikipedia, he was born April 5,
1981 in Long Beach CA. There is no
mention of his birth time.
But this gets more interesting as you
search deeper. Mike had two important
chart points that figured powerfully in his
life: a strong conjunction (within 41’of a
degree) of Venus and Mars with the Sun
in Aries, and an opposition of Saturn and
Jupiter conjunct in Libra.
The Venus-Mars-Sun conjunction in Aries
suggests a powerful love of his comrades
in arms and a willingness to act on their
behalf. The Saturn-Jupiter conjunction in
Libra suggests his discipline in forming a
point of view that would not hesitate to
sacrifice. The story becomes complete
when you do a chart of the day he died,
September 29, 2006 (2:05 PM, Ramadi,
Iraq). The original email I received, stated
the year as 2009, and when I looked at that
date, I was very disappointed in what I
saw. Nothing seemed to fit. Then when I
looked into the story further, I got the
right date. The transiting Sun was exactly
conjunct the natal conjunction of Saturn/
Jupiter, and transiting Mars was less than
2° from an opposition to the Venus-Mars-
Sun conjunction in Aries. I have seldom
found the precision of astrology so clearly
demonstrated. While I am not a traditional
fate astrologer, it was clearly Mike
Monsoor’s destiny to act bravely
whenever the opportunity arose.
So I welcome the entry of Uranus into
Aries. It brings the need for courage very
much to the fore. We can only hope that,
at the same time, with the entry of Nep-
tune into the sign of its rulership, Pisces
(April 5, 2011), we can feel the compassion
that must be felt in order to speak our truths
with love.

or A Look at How the 9th Harmonic and Magi Astrology Help Crack the Code
This article is dedicated to Delphine Jayand Magi Helena for without their bril-liance and generosity, it could not havebeen written, and also to the late greatMargie Herskovitz with much gratitude forher enduring friendship and support.
How do I love thee?Let me count the ways Elizabeth Barrett Browning
NEXT TO THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH, the
Holy Grail, and the Dead Sea
Scrolls, the mysteries of love are
one of life’s most elusive—and compel-
ling. As luck would have it, we have
within our midst some new, less fully-known or understood tools to help us
crack the code. In this two-part article,
we’ll introduce some new pages into our
relationship playbook with two systems
that have their origins in ancient cultural
traditions, and their feet firmly planted in
today’s cutting edge cosmology: the 9th
harmonic and Magi Astrology. (Part II ofthis article on Magi Astrology will appearin the July-August memberletter-Ed.)
The 9th Harmonic:
Is this My Soul Mate?According to astrologer Bob Marks,
harmonics has to be one of the greatestadvances in astrological analysis of thelast 100 years (www.bobmarksastrologer.com). This particular application of the
profound 9th harmonic and its revelations
regarding relationships—was handed
down to me by the brilliant Florida-based
astrologer Delphine Jay.
She in turn, was inspired by the father ofharmonics, British astrologer John Addey,
whose system of harmonics was based on
the Indian system of divisional charts.
The 9th harmonic is comparable (though
not precisely the same as) to the
Navamsa, or 9th divisional, chart, which is
used in Indian astrology to determine
marriage compatibility, information about
the partner, and timing of marriage. The
9th harmonic chart has the capacity to
make a significant contribution to the field
as a means for identifying soul mate
relationships, while providing us the
material that describes the nature of these
relationships. It also has real potential to
go a long way to explaining why couples
are drawn to each other, often inextricably,
feel a deep sense of recognition and
completion and have the potential to
thrive, while living a long and happy life
together.
Working with the 9th HarmonicThe 9th harmonic is fairly simple to work
with. Of course, with computer software it
just requires you to choose the harmonic
option, and then click on #9 in your soft-
ware; for those mathematically inclined
and good with a calculator, there is also a
pretty straight forward means of figuring
out this chart manually. Delphine Jay sug-
gests choosing an equal house system, as
this is a hypothetical chart; it may be
worthwhile to explore other options, as well.
Once you’ve created your chart, simply
compare the 9th harmonic chart in the
following ways, with another possibility
for understanding deeper issues within
the self regarding core relationship
matters. You would compare the following:
• Each individual’s natal to the other’s
9th harmonic (indicator of connections
between one’s daily life expression to the
other’s soul level; these connections may
help integrate soul mate aspects into day-
to-day compatibility).
• Each person’s 9th to their own natal
(an indicator that sheds light on one’s
relationship themes, expectations,
challenges and fulfillment, and may reveal
other factors as well, as we compare it to
the other charts).
• Each individual’s 9th harmonic to the
other’s 9th harmonic (indicator of soul
level to soul level connections. These are
indicators of a purely spiritual connection;
if these are strong but lack the support of
the natal to the 9th or the natal to the natal,
the relationship may not have the capacity
to survive the rigors of practical life).
This last is optional, primarily providing
insight into relationship patterns on the
soul level when you compare.
To work with this technique, keep it simple
at first by primarily looking at the conjunc-
tions (the closer, the more potent, and the
more contacts, the more powerful) for soul
level and soul mate contacts. But remem-
ber, the entire chart is pertinent. Interpret
this chart just as you would interpret a
natal chart, using the techniques of bi-
wheel synastry to compare the charts
while finding the conjunctions. In theory,
the composite should also work, as
should transits and all the other funda-
mentals of astrological analysis. Delphine
Jay found the transits to her 9th harmonic
even more reliable than transits to her
United States where he was born. Forfive years before that, he taught Englishat the high school level. In 1972 hebegan his software career, and in thatsame year he took up astrology and hasstudied and practiced that art for thou-sands of clients. In addition to astrology, his great passion is also poetry. Bill mixesthese two passions with every reading byusing metaphor as the connecting pointbetween the planets and a client’s life. husband’s natal to understand what was
going on in his life. One of the most
extraordinary aspects of this harmonic
chart is that it actually, quite literally,
describes your soul mate or partner as
well as what fulfills you personally on the
soul level by what Delphine Jay calls
parallel symbology.
As mentioned earlier, this technique
is one of a very few astrological re-
sources that attempts to answer Is this mysoul mate? with certainty. The other set
of techniques introduced and mentioned
previously are those of Magi Astrology,
which not only addresses this question, but
a good many more. To illustrate these
techniques, we’ve chosen a couple who
were up until their meeting, ill-fated in both
love and marriage: Barbra Streisand and
James Brolin.
Barbra Streisand and
James BrolinAs a couple, Barbra Streisand (April 24,
1942, 5:08 AM EWT, Brooklyn NY) and
James Brolin (July 18, 1940, 11:10 AM
PST, Los Angeles, CA), form a classic,
almost textbook example of soul mate
astrology (see charts on p. 16). Prior to
meeting, both were married before, and
had contented themselves with achieve-
ment and a solitary life until they were
seated next to each other at a dinner party.
Barbra Streisand agrees when James
Brolin says they felt married almost from
that moment they met. Much was written
about these two astrologically when they
first met. The conjunction between Streis-
and’s Mars in Gemini and Brolin’s Venus,
with an extraordinarily tight orb of 2° works
across all techniques; even the Magi flag
this as one of the life-long sexual linkages
that work after marriage. The Magis, however, believe it was the couple’s Chironlinkages that sealed their fate.
Finding James in Barbara’s Chart
and Vice VersaBrolin certainly fits the bill of Mr. Right for
Streisand. This laid back handsome man is
aptly described by her natal Mars-Jupiter
conjunction, and she reciprocates as the
nurturing, somewhat insecure, massively
accomplished woman, described by his
natal Moon in Capricorn in the 4th. This
symbolism is carried further when we learn
that Streisand lost her father when she
was 15 months old, and spent 14 years of
her life developing, writing, directing, and
performing in the movie Yentl, a cinematic
homage to her unknown father. As far as
traditional synastry goes, theirs practi-
cally jumps off the page with the magni-
tude and velocity of the contacts between
them. Comparing these two charts, we find
her Sun within range of his Jupiter bring-
ing boundless happiness. His Venus to
her Jupiter brings great love, while her
Venus in exaltation opposing both her and
his Neptune demonstrates how his un-
conditional love for her amplifies her own
vision for just this kind of relationship.
I often see Moon conjoining Mars as hers
does to his very closely in the synastry of
a woman who finds the man to be the very
personification of her ideal man; that
certainly applies here. Her Pluto, Chiron,
Moon to his Mercury, Pluto, and Mars
provides the healing and nurturing
component to their emotional, sexual and
mental connections. In the sign of Leo,
this brings great emotional expressiveness
and romance, as well. Brolin’s Nodes fall
on her 1st and 7th house angles pointing
to a destined connection, both past and
page 14
them with a stabilizing force that is
fatherly in nature and keeps them togetherwith a kind of universal Super Glue,
strengthened in fixed signs and contact
with her Sun.
• Barbra Streisand’s Natal Mars to
James Brolin’s 9th Harmonic Mars.
Barbra Streisand’s natal Mars is within a
degree of an exact conjunction to James’s
9th harmonic Mars. This is a potent
connection for soul level sexual fulfillment
and a total fit for these two, both fulfilling
and describing her masculine ideal on the
soul level.
• Barbra Streisand’s Natal Moon to
James Brolin’s 9th Harmonic South
Node and her Pluto- Chiron-Moon to his
9th Harmonic Neptune-Juno-South Node-
Uranus Stellium. Streisand’s natal Moon
falls on Brolin’s 9th South Node, indicat-
ing a powerful past life connection.
There is more that could be said here, but
this covers a good many notable and
powerful conjunctions and planetary
combinations between these two charts,
and the charts speak for themselves in
their potency and power. From his natal to
her 9th harmonic, we continue to find a
plethora of soul level contacts from
Brolin’s 9th to the chart of Streisand’s
future; his South Node in Aries falls in her
first house close to her ascendant
capturing Streisand’s Martian qualities
(there are many but she has Aries on the
rise, to start) and he readily admits that
she wears the pants. His North Node in
Libra falls in her 7th house of marriage and
beautifully describes his Venusian
songstress.
By now you get the idea. These two have
a full house in the synastry department.
When approaching harmonics, it is useful
to be keyed into the basic natal charts, as
well as the bi-wheel synastry and the
composite, as we look for patterns and
conjunctions. In the interest of simplicity,
we will focus primarily on the conjunc-
tions: their frequency and closeness. This
method is similar to those used in Classi-
cal Astrology, as well as Magi Astrology,
where conclusions are drawn by catalog-
ing contacts hierarchically in order of
weight and importance.
Soul Mate Connections:
9th Harmonic ChartIn this technique the 9th harmonic
equates to the soul mate, therefore you
could use a similar assessment where you
would essentially add up the hits on the
soul mate level as a testament to the depth
and breadth of the soul mate connection.
The more literary and anecdotal
interpretations also hold up and will
provide additional insight. Keep in mind
that close conjunctions between natal and
9th harmonic, 9th to 9th harmonic charts
are fairly rare. When you begin to compare
the 9th to the 9th and the 9th to the Natal,
you realize the full impact of the number of
conjunctions between these two. Here are
a few examples:
Barbra Streisand’s Natal to
James Brolin’s 9thWhen looking from the viewpoint of
Brolin’s 9th harmonic to Streisand’s natal
(see p. 17), we find the following:
• Barbra Streisand’s Natal Jupiter to
James Brolin’s 9th Harmonic Moon. This
very close and extremely auspicious con-
junction of Streisand’s natal Jupiter in Ge-
mini to Brolin’s 9th harmonic Moon funda-
mentally describes a soul level sense of
happiness and contentment for both. This
is a deeply rewarding nurturing relation-
ship that translates well to daily life.
• Barbra Streisand’s Natal Sun to
James Brolin’s 9th Harmonic Saturn.
Another extremely close contact binds

practical essence. You may also look at
the 9th to 9th to indicate the match on the
soul level: soulmate to soulmate.
Summing up, the extraordinary number of
connections between the 9th harmonic
charts reveal that these soul mate energies
translate easily into the daily practical life
of the couple, as well as from soul-to-soul
level, and serve to convince us further of
the rare level of soul mate connection they
share.
Conclusion: The Way We Were
with a Happy EndingJames Brolin and Barbra Streisand were
married two years to the day that they
met. Described as a star-kissed event in a
1998 People Magazine article, the day
was, indeed, imbued with magic. John
Travolta said It was probably the mostbeautiful wedding I’ve been to, and the
groom’s sister summed it up best It waslike being in a fairy tale (People Maga-
zine, Volume 20, 1998).
Clearly, after ten years and a happy
marriage, this powerful duo have managed
to work through the requisite challenges
of married life with the occasional tune up,
and counseling sessions. From an astrolo-
gical perspective, the soul mate energies
work beautifully both in their day-to-day
life and on the soul to soul level. While
the traditional synastry between the two
is, indeed, pyrotechnic, the 9th Harmonic
contacts shows the depth and breadth oftheir soul mate connections, how these
connections will play out in their practical
daily lives and bind these two together on
a very deep soul to soul level; In the end,
nothing can completely immunize a couple
from some measure of discord, loss,
disappointment, conflict or, even tragedy,
but certainly the abundance of auspicious
aspects on all fronts go a long way to
preserve the very rare and special bond
they clearly share.
(The second part of this article will explain
Cinderella aspects and Super Linkagesaccording to Magi Astrology.)

Webmaster.
Chair’s Report. John Marchesella.
This was John’s first Board meeting as
Chair. A hospitality committee is being
formed for NCGR UAC events. The
national board will have four meetings a
year going forward to UAC rather than the
two that have been customary in the past.
These meetings will take place online.
Clerk’s Report. Joyce Levine. Expendi-
tures approved by the Executive Commit-
tee included $392 for CD printing related
materials for Demetrius Bagley and a $400
accounting retainer fee for Renata Varmall.
Election results were: John Marchesella
elected Chair, Mark Wolz elected Director.
The Bylaw Amendment allowing voting
online passed, so the next national elec-
tion will be online. Paper ballots will be
sent to members who do not have email.
Treasurer’s Report. Warren Kinsman.
Every effort is being made to reduce
NCGR costs. As of March 11, 2011, the
bank account balances were as follows:
Capital One Money Market Fund $41,122,
Bank of America Checking Account
$12,193.
Secretary’s Report. Liane Thomas
Wade. The format for E-News will be
revised this summer. This will necessitate
E-News not being sent out for the month
of June. There has been an increase in
orders for multiple journals from other
countries.
Publications Report. Loretta Lopez.
The theme for the Autumn Equinox
Journal is Modern Planets and WorldEvents: Political, Social, Economic.
Research Director Jagdish Maheshri will
be the journal editor. A call is being put
out for authors to submit articles on any
one of the topics and an attempt to explain
the influence of modern planets.
Memberletter Report. Ronnie Gale
Dreyer. The deadline for the May-June
memberletter is April 15. Memberletter
has been online only since the November-
December 2010 issue. People who have a
problem receiving it can email [email protected]. Lynn Koiner and Mark
Wolz have volunteered to help those with
problems. Chapter presidents have been
asked to help their members who need
printed copies of memberletter. Advertis-
ing has increased since member-letterwent online. The memberletter will be
redesigned by Loretta and Ronnie.
Webmaster’s Report. Kenneth Irving.
With regard to a Member Section on the
web, the membership database for the
New York chapter is now online. The
audio and video sections are working well.
The memberletter archive is finished. Future
ideas for the Member Section include hold-
ing events. A content editor and event coor-
dinator are needed. A request was made for
Board members to update their bios. A UAC
page is up on the website.
Membership Report. Mark Wolz. There
has been an increase in renewals,
particularly surrounding early UAC
registration. Triple memberships in NCGR,
ISAR, and AFAN are being offered for
new members only as part of UAC
registration. New members who join
NCGR through UAC will become mem-
bers-at-large. Upon renewal, they will be
able to join a chapter. There is an ongoing
effort to bring in new chapters and to build
membership. Links with astrologers and
astrology students are being pursued. David
Railey, who has contacts in China, has
offered to help with setting up and translat-
ing information in China.
International Director’s Report. Lynn
Koiner. There will be closer coordination
between the international director and the
research director, so as to increase foreign
contributions to the research journal. An
International Tea will be organized at UAC
for foreign attendees. Ingrid Petroff of
Austria has joined the Advisory Board.
Education Director’s Report. Kaye
Shinker. Book titles by NCGR members
who are authors are being solicited. The
books will be listed on the website, with
links to Amazon for purchase. The
Walking Tour at UAC will include an
interactive lecture and a slide show.
Media and Communications Report.
Demetrius Bagley. Facebook postings
are being made on average of twice a
week. The vision is to have at least a
month with daily posts by a few editors or
content managers and to have an events
manager posting all chapter and SIG talks.

Education News. Developing a List of
Books Written by Members. What if
NCGR had a list of the books written by
members that included a brief synopsis of
the contents and then a link to the place
where the book could be purchased. A
formidable project, but NCGR already has
completed part of it, since many books are
listed in the Book Nook in the E-News, or
have been reviewed or mentioned in
memberletter, and organization of the
contents of the past few years is ongoing.
However, the membership has written
quite a few books that have not been
included in the Book Nook. It is time to
start collecting these titles, separate them
by subject matter, and develop a web page
for our members. Therefore I'm asking you
to contact me with a list of books you
have written or published. (E-books also
qualify). Write to me at [email protected],
and I will write back asking for more
information.

2011 National Board Elections
Once again, it’s time to nominate
people for the NCGR National
Board. Would you like to be
more involved in the astrological
community and have a voice in the day
to day running of NCGR? Nominating
someone, or running for the Board
yourself, gives you greater influence in
steering NCGR’s direction, and in-
creases exposure among your like-
minded colleagues. Elected and ap-
pointed Board members will also assist
in planning NCGR's activities at UAC,
May 24-29, 2012 in New Orleans. This is
the first year that voting will take place
by email. Those who do not have email
will receive ballots in the mail. This year

Solar Arc Directions, by Frank C. Clifford;
Astro Mind Maps, by Kim Farley; 101
Questions for the Student Astrologer, by
Jane Struthers, all published by Flare Pub-
lications/London School of Astrology, www.
flareuk.com, 2011. Paper. unpaginated.
£5.99 Br. each.
Sometimes good things come in small
packages. These booklets, which run
approximately 35-50 pages each, are good
examples. They are clearly designed to be
adjuncts to classes, but in most cases
they also have good standalone value as
references.
Solar Arc Directions, for example, makes
solar arcs clear and accessible for even
newcomers to this method of forecasting.
Clifford shows you how to use them to
see the potentials in the chart unfold and
how to track and keep track of potentially
important timings in your life. He con-
trasts solar arcs with degree-for-a-year,
discusses ingresses and final degrees,
and explains the much-neglected shadowtransit phenomena (the repetition of a
solar arc by transit—which, by the way,
can also work with progressions).
As you might expect from Clifford, he has
been very generous with data and example
charts. And yes, you can expect to find
the royals here, but you’ll also find Pamela
Anderson, Dionne Warwick, and Bill
Clinton, among others. There are no
cookbook interpretations, but everything
else you need to know to get started with
Solar Arcs can be found here.
Astro Mind Maps is an information-
packed booklet covering pretty much
anything you might find covered in a
basic astrology course. There are quick
reference guides listing planet, sign,
house, element, and quality keywords and
brief discussions of the relevant genera-
tional placements of the outer planets in
the 20th century and now. There is
information on Mercury retrograde and
how to make the most of it (courtesy of
Frank Clifford) with starting and ending
dates and positions for all Mercury
retrograde periods between 2010-2015.
There is even a quick reference ephemeris
for Jupiter through Pluto listing positions
for January 1 of each year from 1950 to
2020. This section also lists Summer Time
dates for the UK. The mind maps them-
selves consist of diagrams with themes
branching out of the core principle be it
sign, planet, or aspect. These are innova-
tive, though frankly I prefer more orderly
listings myself. However, you can’t go
wrong with the quantity or quality of
information in this booklet, and beginners
will no doubt find it very useful.
101 Astrology Questions for the StudentAstrologer is just what it sounds like. The
questions are interesting and very useful
for generating discussion in a class. They
could also serve to prepare students for
exams. All the basics are covered, includ-
ing synthesis, and there are numerous
charts including event charts. There is
also a good bibliography. One caution
though—this really IS 101 astrology
questions. No answers are given. Sea-
soned astrologers should have no
problems figuring out the answers, but for
a student studying alone, this book isn’t
going to be too helpful. That said, this is a
wonderful aid for teachers. I have used it
and like it very much.
I would particularly recommend this series
of books to teachers, but students would
also find the first two very useful. All in
all, this is a very worthwhile series. I
heartily recommend it.
Astrology and the Archetypal Power of

As astrologers, we make extensive use
of numbers for everything from chart
calculation to aspect theory. Yet very little
has been written on the relationship
between astrology and numbers, and
much of what HAS been written is very
sketchy. Joe Landwehr has set out to
remedy this with what is the second book

Transitions
In Memory of Camille Adams (1925-2011)
CAMMILLE ADAMS, THE GRANDE DAME of
Maryland astrology, was the
Founding Member and Emeritas of the
Annapolis Chapter of the National
Council for Geocosmic Research.
The first meeting and formation of the
chapter was held on March 8, 1992 at
1:04PM at her home in Bowie, Maryland
with a beginning membership of 10. She
was the President of the organization from
1992 through 1994, served as an officer
throughout the 1990’s and continued to
actively participate in the functioning of
the NCGR both locally and nationally.
1995 marked the beginning of the Yuletide
Luncheon held at the Naval Academy in
Annapolis. Cammille lectured on “The
Winter Solstice.” This became an annual
tradition, and she continued to lecture on
the Solstice yearly until 1999.
of a two-volume set that will ultimately
allow you to use this system of
Pythagorean number theory with your
chart and add to the system of spiritual
astro-psychology elucidated in
Landwehr’s previous books. And speaking
of those previous books, if you haven’t as
yet read at least Tracking The Soul WithAn Astrology of Consciousness, I might
suggest doing so, since while Landwehr
DOES include a bit of review of salient
points, there is much information that
simply isn’t included, especially about the
chakras, which are also an integral part of
this system of astrology.
The bulk of this book is taken up with an
exploration of the archetypal sense of
number based on the ancient Greek
practice of arithmology which is based on
Pythagorean number theory. Arithmology
first considers the basic mathematical
principles related to each number, and
then speculates on the allegorical implica-
tions of these principles. So you will find,
for example, that each number is con-
nected to a god, which in turn can be
correlated to certain planets or asteroids.
You’ll also learn about each number from
0 to 9. For example four is the realm of
manifestation and brings a discussion of
the four elements, the medicine wheel and
the four directions, and the implications of
“four” within the chakra system. Nine is
the realm of fate and the portal between
dimensions. Each number is, in fact, a
realm, providing opportunities for growth.
Those of you seeking cookbook-style
interpretations or quick-and-dirty chart
application are going to be disappointed.
First of all, Landwehr is not an easy read.
He does not spoon-feed you. And he
keeps the information coming.
Secondly, as he says at the beginning,
this book is the theory that is the prelude
to the application, which, unfortunately is
not explained until Book Two. And I fully
suspect that if you try to use Book Two
without understanding this book you
could very well be out of luck. On the
other hand, for those of you who are
interested in harmonics, mythology, or
asteroids, there is a wealth of densely-
packed information here. For example, did
you know that “two” is associated with
Isis, Demeter, and Hera among others? Or
that “five” is related to Pallas and
Nemesis?
There are no charts, but there’s a good
glossary, an excellent bibliography, and a
decent and much-needed index. Given the
huge amount of material here, editing
could perhaps have been tighter, but
overall this book is readable. And perhaps
by the time Book Two comes out, you’ll
have assimilated what’s in Volume One.
Not recommended to beginners, but
heartily recommended to astromytho-
logists, psychospiritual astrologers, and
those interested in Pythagorean theory in
relation to astrology.
DONNA VAN TOEN is an astrologicalconsultant, teacher, and author of “TheAstrologer’s Node Book” and “The MarsBook.” She coordinates the annual Stateof the Art (SOTA) Conference (see p. 21),and speaks for groups and conferencesthroughout the world. Cammille Adams was a third generation
astrologer born in England in an area
known as the Cotswalds. Her family’s
home, she claimed, was used on postcards
of the region illustrating the thatched roof
cottage. Her maternal grandmother lived
near Stonehenge. She vividly recalled
playing in The Henge as a child.
She learned astrology at the feet of her
mother (Rosie) and grandmother. After
dinner she was required to identify all of
the astrological glyphs inscribed in the
piecrust before she could have dessert.
An accomplished seamstress and
excellent cook, she was adept at
embroidery, crocheting, knitting, and
making her own clothing. She enjoyed
preparing meals and luncheons for guests
topped off with a traditional glass of
Mead. During World War II she became a
firefighter and met her first husband, an
American G.I. Consequently, she moved to
the United States and began her career as
a renowned astrologer.

Ritva Annikki Murphy
(1947-2011)
RITVA MURPHY, A LONGTIME MEMBER of
the Annapolis Chapter of NCGR,
passed away in January. She missed very
few meetings since joining the organiza-
tion on July 2001 and, accompanied by her
husband Michael, faithfully attended
every Yuletide Luncheon. According to
Mike, Ritva studied and worked on
astrological charts every day for three
hours. She especially liked doing her
family's charts. Ritva's smiling face, calm
demeanor, and pleasant personality will be
sorely missed.
Lynn KoinerBorn: May 13, 1947
Died: January 31, 2011
Many present day astrologers had the
opportunity to take classes from her and
were encouraged and inspired to pursue
higher levels of study and contribute to
the astrological community. She strongly
believed that one should know his or her
own chart before attempting to interpret
others. All her charts were calculated
manually as there were no computer pro-
grams or astrology software at that time.
She is survived by her son, sister, four
grandchildren, and a great granddaughter.

many whose lives you have touched.

It is almost impossible to mention Nev-
ille’s name in the astrological community
without also thinking of his beloved wife
Georgie—Neville and Georgie. They were
together to the end. Our hearts go out to
Georgie, and Neville’s family, at this time.
Neville and I had weekly contact, some-
times daily contact, for almost 17 years.
He was a respected business colleague
and a cherished personal friend and he
will be sorely missed.
Neville began teaching Vedic astrology in
1998 specialising in the Systems Ap-
proach. Besides being involved in the
computer industry since 1970, Neville was
associated with Solar Fire in different roles
since 1994. He was an agent, chief tech-
nical support officer, programmer, and also
a Technical Director of the company.
Neville’s involvement in astrology also
includes lectures on Vedic astrology
throughout Australia, in Auckland (NZ)
and Edinburgh (Scotland). He was awar-
ded the title of Jyotish Kovid from India
(Indian Council of Astrological Sciences)
in 2001. He was also a Past President of
the Victorian Astrologers Association
(VAA) Inc.
In June 2004, Neville released his own
Astracadabra, an astrology software pro-
gram for Pocket PCs and Windows Mobile
Phones that was used for all systems of
astrology. Then he took over and con-
tinued to develop the Esoteric Technolo-
gies’ range of astrology software, making
them his own. With one short break, Nev-
ille remained as Solar Fire’s Chief Program-
mer until he was forced to focus entirely
on his own health. He was diagnosed with
cancer last year. A tumor was discovered
late October when he had a stomach
problem checked out in hospital. This
tumor was located between the pancreas
and liver and he was told that there was
no known cure. In his own words he said:
I have been very fortunate to have beenable to spend most of my working lifefollowing through with my two greatestpassions: software programming andastrology. As some of you know, it wasin 2007 where I was able to finally jointhese twin passions when I began work-ing on the programming of the SolarFire program. While I have achieved agreat number of personal goals over theyears, the three achievements that standout for me are:
• convening the biennial FAA (Federa-tion of Australian Astrologers) Interna-tional Conference in the year 2000working with a great team from the VAA; • the prediction I made in 2001 of theU.S. retaliation after 9/11 where I notonly predicted the day but to within 15–20 minutes of the first bombs falling onAfghanistan; and • the prediction I made in 2003 (wewere in the worst drought in 100 years atthe time) where I stated that the next floodcycle for Australia would occur in 2010-2011, based on the declination cycle ofthe North Node. With the flooding thathas occurred over great areas in the east-ern states of Australia over the past seve-ral months, this prediction has come true.
Vale Neville.

IT IS NO SECRET, especially to this body of
astrologers, that the financial crisis that
has struck the United States and the world
would have had an equally difficult effect
on your NCGR. As a result we have made
some difficult changes and are working on
making others.
Currently under consideration are ways andmeans of consolidating paid staff positions.Of course, Board members volunteer their ser-vices, but currently we have one full-time sec-retary who processes all orders that come inonline. There is a steady stream of orders on aweekly basis, and one person processing allof this just isn’t enough to provide good ser-vice. Cutting here, would not give you, themembership, the good service that you havecome to expect. From this one example, youshould get some idea of the decisions facingyour board. This is a dilemma faced by almost all
small businesses.
With the last Journal, we cut the size, saving aconsiderable amount in postage. We are look-ing at ways to economize with future journalsas well, although we will keep the traditionalsize for the Winter 2010 issue.
Our decision to move the memberletter toan entirely online publication was the firstdifficult change that directly affected ourmembers. Obviously this was a decision notreached lightly, and equally obviously, those without computers and those wholove to hold in their hands what they arereading are not happy either. Please beaware that we are continuing to study thisissue and your concerns have been heard. We asked our Chapters to lend a hand andprint out the online file for members whodon’t have computers. This has been highlysuccessful in some areas and not so suc-cessful in others.
Keeping these things in mind, I pose thisquestion, what is the solution for us in thelong run? The answer is: double our effortsin recruiting new members.
Our Chapters are the backbone of NCGR.The vast majority of our members belong toChapters, and that social interaction keepsmany astrologers renewing their NCGRmembership year after year. Recruiting newmembers through Chapters is a win-win situ-ation. By recruiting more members to joinChapters, Chapters will generate additional
funds for themselves through the annual
rebates. Voila no more worries about defi-
cits. If only one of every four of our members
Letter from the Treasurer
could recruit just one member, we would
reach that goal.
The easy answer is for each NCGR member
to go out and recruit one new member. If we
did that, NCGR would be in great shape. If
we literally doubled membership, we would
have enough to own our office, then staff it
so that all requests for services would be
filled on the day they arrived. That’s my
dream. Can we make it come true?

Do you want to write for NCGR?
Our bimonthly memberletter needs
articles of about 2000 words that range from
current events to interpreting the horo-
scope of a famous person to illustrating a
technique. All astrological systems, tech-
niques, and research results are welcome,
especially good chart profiles. We invite
all NCGR members to contribute articles,
and let us know which topics you want to
see covered in future issues. Please query
first before sending a full-length article.
Short pieces, letters to the editor, and in-
teresting facts are also welcome. If you are
interested contact [email protected]. See left for submission
guidelines.
Leigh Westin, Editor of the Geocosmic
