Paul Tadda completed his term onthe Menomonee Falls School BoardApril 13, and he will have a “busscape”to honor his time on the board.

Tadda opted not to seek re-electionto the board. During the April 13 boardmeeting, Tadda was presented with aFriend of Education award from the dis-trict. The “award” presented to recipi-ents is artwork of a school bus createdby a third grade student in the district.

The busscape presented to Tadda wasfrom student Ethan Block.“Paul is always prepared. At any

School Board meeting, committee meet-ing, or board work session, he’s ready togo. That alone is special enough butPaul brought much more to the table asa School Board member,” board presi-dent Faith VanderHorst said. “His greatexpertise in engineering and standingup for the underdog highlight his term ofservice.”

VanderHorst said that Tadda hasbeen a great help in the selection of anarchitecture and construction manage-ment firm as part of district work in cre-ating a long-range facility plan.

“HIs analytical background hasbeen useful in reviewing proposals relat-ed to facilities, equipment repair andupgrades,” Director of Business Services

Jeff Gross said in statement that wasincluded in the Friend of Education pres-entation. VanderHorst read the state-ment during the presentation.

VanderHorst then read her ownstatement, stating that “we enjoyed hisdeliberate thoughtfulness and dry wit.We appreciated his candor, sharingsnippets of his childhood and personalschool experiences. He often advocat-ed for those students who don’t alwaysspeak up for themselves.”

Members of the board then com-mented on working with Tadda.

“You kept me on my toes, I’ll giveyou that,” board member DavidNoshay said. Noshay referenced thetimes Noshay would be clean shavenand then have a beard during deer hunt-ing season. Noshay also cited Tadda’s“insightful and balanced thoughts andcomments that guided us in curriculum(committee) and on the board.Invaluable and very deeply appreciat-ed by me and this community.”

Tadda said he was was honoredand humbled by the busscape honor.

“It will be a unique way to remem-ber the three years of service on theSchool Board, working with the talentedmembers of the board,”Tadda said. “Ilearned a little bit from each one, and itwas a great time.”

Speaking of Superintendent PatriciaGreco, Tadda said “your dedication

and drive is second to none and I’mhappy to see the dedication to continu-ous improvement, it will bear good fruit.”

He added that “the district is ingood hands and has a bright future.”

Tadda also thanked voters for theopportunity to serve and his wife andfamily for “putting up” with hisabsences.

“I came her to serve and I got a lotmore out of it,” Tadda said.

A staged accident was part of a two-day program at Menomonee Falls HighSchool to drive home the danger of drunkdriving.

The aftermath of a “crash” scene wasre-enacted at in the Menomonee Falls HighSchool Schumann Stadium April 23 as partof the “Every 15 minutes” program.

Meg Hanley, School Counselor atMenomonee Falls High School and Alcoholand Other Drug Awareness Co-Coordinator; and Felicia Perkins-Peterson,School Social Worker at Menomonee FallsHigh School and Alcohol and Other DrugAwareness Co-Coordinator, explained priorto the event that as part of the Every 15

Minute program, the first day was to startwith a “grim reaper” calling students whohave been selected from a cross section ofthe entire student body out of class, with onestudent being removed every 15 minutes, torepresent a person being killed in an alco-hol-related crash. After the student wasremoved from the classroom, a police officerwill then read an “obituary” of the student.A few minutes later, the student will return as“living dead,” complete with white facemake up and a black “Every 15 Minutes” T-shirt. The simulated crash scene was viewedby the student body at the high school. Thescene included rescue workers and “vic-tims” who are then transported for anovernight student retreat.

“The retreat will simulate the separationfrom friends and family. Cell phones will beconfiscated as well. A support staff ofcounselors, social workers, and psycholo-gists will facilitate the retreat,” Hanley andPerkins-Peterson said in describing theevent. “The students will engage in chal-lenging and interactive activities. They willread letters written by to them by their par-ents. Their parents will also receive lettersfrom them to read the night they are notwith them.”

On April 25, a student assembly wasscheduled which included a video and apresentation from Wisconsin AttorneyGeneral and former Waukesha CountyDistrict Attorney Brad Schimel.

“After the assembly, the students willthen go back to class to process all they’veexperienced and provide feedback on thetwo days,” Hanley and Perkins-Petersonsaid.

The event is organized by the SchoolDistrict of Menomonee Falls and districtand community partners. Organizationsinvolved in the event include Menomonee

Falls Fire and Police DepaCommunity Memorial HospitaPlayers, Flight For Life, MJM Printit-shirt printing business), B & L Solutions, Jackson(printing of postesigns), AmericInn, Hartford (provhotel accommodations for the overnight), Johnson School Bus C(provided transportation for the sSchmidt and Bartelt Funeral Homeed hearse and casket for asRoskopf’s Towing (donated the cars), Schimel (to speak at theassembly), Optimist Club of MenFalls, Menomonee Falls BoosteCommunity Memorial Hospital anParent Teacher Student Orga(donated various amounts of moneevent to occur) and Ally’s Bistro the lunch for the students).

• A 57-year-old man was arrested foroperating while intoxicated-fourth offense at

12:29 a.m. April 10 after he was for traffic violations at Pilgrim aroads.

Water wisely. Water plants thoroughlyand only when needed. Water the soil, notthe plant, using a watering wand, drip irriga-tion or a soaker hose so less water is lost toevaporation. Water early in the morningwhenever possible to reduce water loss dur-ing the heat of the day and diseases causedby wet foliage at night.

Manage your lawns to reduce water use.Select drought tolerant grass varieties toreduce watering needs. Prepare the soilbefore seeding or sodding or aerate andspread a thin layer of compost over existing

lawns to increase water absorption andreduce runoff. Mow high to encourage deeproots that are more drought tolerant and pestresistant. Allow lawns to go dormant during

hot dry weather. If irrigating, water thorough-ly when needed, that’s when your footprintsremain in the lawn.

Conserve water and reduce time andmoney spent on plant care. Mulch the soilaround trees, shrubs and other plants withseveral inches of woodchips, shreddedleaves, evergreen needles or other organicmaterial. Mulching reduces watering fre-quency, prevents soil compaction from heavyrainfall thus increasing water absorption. Italso adds organic matter to the soil as itdecomposes.

Repair leaking faucets, fittings and gar-den hoses. A slow leak of one drip per sec-ond can waste up to nine gallons of waterper day.

Look for and use wasted water. Collectthe “warming water” typically wasted when

preparing baths and showers. Use a five-gal-lon bucket to collect this fresh water and useit for your containers and gardens. Collectwater from your dehumidifier and window airconditioners for use on flowering plants. Do

not, however, use this water if environmental-ly harmful solvents have been used to cleanthis equipment.

Check with your local municipality if you

are considering using gray water. Once youwash clothes, dishes or yourself, water isclassed as gray water and most municipalitieshave guidelines or regulations related to itsuse.

Harvest rainwater if your municipalityallows. The ancient technique of capturingrainwater in jugs, barrels and cisterns hasmade a comeback. Collecting rain when it isplentiful and storing it until it is needed is oneway to manage water for the landscape. Butfirst check local regulations before installing arain harvesting system. Several states have

banned rain harvesting, while othrebates or rain barrels at a discoundeners.
