The Filipino Catholic Chap-laincy in Vienna has a new home. In November 2014, we are moving to the newly created parish Christus am Wienerberg, with Salvator am Wienerfeld as our host community. We are leaving Maria vom Berge Karmel Parish with countless happy memories and are hoping to continue them in our new pastoral location. God is in-deed good that in our heavy loss, He assures us of a big-ger gain.

As we start a new phase in our community’s journey, a new pastoral challenge sure-ly awaits us. The adjustment period will test our patience, and community stability will require everyone to share the goods and goodness of her/his heart. But time has proven that we are capable

of withstanding anything difficult as long as we are united in action and fervent in faith. With our resiliency and humor, the heavy yoke ahead of us will become easy to bear, and anything lacking will be richly provid-ed for. This new pastoral location is not yet the "promised land" for the Fili-pino Community, but even now we can already see it as the "land flowing with milk and honey", if only we be-lieve and seriously work for it.

Gone are the days when we just gaze to the heavens waiting for the shower of blessings. We are supposed to be sharers and not mere recipients of our Christian faith. This is now our mis-sionary agenda as we live our faith in this Pfarre Neu.

The joy of the Gospel is for eve-rybody to expe-rience and everyone should give a hand in spreading it. How beautiful are the hands that serve, but much prettier if those hands evangelize.

Let us thank God for giving us a new home and for ac-companying us in this jour-ney of evangelization. Home now is where we are sent. And bloom where we are planted, we must.

Message from the Chaplain

After more than a decade of enjoying the hospitality of the

parish of Maria vom Berge Karmel, the Chaplaincy has now

received information from Aux. Bishop Franz Scharl (see his

letter on pages 2-3) about our new host community: the new

Parish of Christus am Wienerberg. It comprises the communi-

ties of Apostelpfarre, Salvator am Wienerfeld and Franz von

Sales (contact details on last page) and will come into full oper-

ation in September 2015. In the coming months we will focus

our efforts on re-distributing the services and activities of our

Chaplaincy among the three locations. Our three priests will be

accommodated in Salvator am Wienerfeld, and most of our

religious groups will adjust their respective meeting times to

facilitate the use of our new "“clubroom" at Apostelpfarre. Not

all details are as yet fixed and agreed, but there is a strong

sense of willingness among our parishioners to adjust to the

new situation. In life, the only constant is change.

We pray to Mama Mary to show us the way.

Am 13. 1. 2012 hat Kardinal Christoph Schönborn den Auftrag für unsere Umstrukturi-erung gegeben. Die letzten zwei Jahre waren ein spannender Weg zur Pfarrfindung "Christus am Wiener-berg".

Reis spielt auf den Philippinen eine wichtige Rolle. Die kleinen Pflanzen brauchen viel Pflege, was für die Bauern harte Arbeit bedeutet. Zuerst wird die Pflanze in einem nassen Feld aufge-zogen, bis sie eine gewisse Größe erreicht. Danach wird sie in ein Trockenfeld umgesetzt, wo sie einige Monate reifen muss, bis sie geerntet werden kann.

Auch die Philippinische Gemeinde gleicht einem solchen Reisfeld. Elf Jahre war sie in Maria vom Berge Karmel beheimatet und ist dort zu einer großen und lebendigen Gemeinde gewachsen. Nun soll sie diesen Ort, der den meis-ten lieb geworden ist und mit dem man viele schöne Erinnerungen verbindet, verlassen und in zwei andere Pfarren des Dekanats – Salvator am Wienerfeld und Apostelpfarre – übersiedeln.

Der Abschied fällt allen schwer, viele verstehen nicht, wieso der Karmeliterorden die Kirche und das Pfarrhaus an die Syrisch-orthodoxe Kirche verkauft haben. Man kann eine große Unsicher-heit spüren: Wie kann ein Gemeindeleben, das auf zwei Orte aufgeteilt ist, in der Praxis funktionieren? Werden wir genug Räume haben? Werden wir weiterhin unsere philippinischen Feste

und Novenen feiern können? Sind wir dort überhaupt erwünscht? – Viele berechtig-te Fragen!

Vielleicht ist es ähnlich wie mit den Reispflanzen. Die Umsetzung auf das Trockenfeld ist ein Risiko, wenn man etwas falsch macht, besteht die Ge-fahr, dass die Pflanzen eingehen. Doch der Bauer weiß, was er zu tun hat. Würde er sie nicht umpflanzen, würden die Körner nie reifen und geerntet werden können. Nur so kön-nen sie Nahrung für viele hungrige Menschen werden. Jesus hat Gott in mehreren Gleichnissen als Sämann geschildert. Wäre er auf den Philip-pinen gewesen, hätte er ihn wohl mit

einem Reisbauern verglichen – und das Gottesreich, das unter seiner Pflege wächst und reift, mit einem Reisfeld.

Ich wünsche der Philippinischen Gemeinde, ihren Seelsorgern und Mitarbeiter/innen Kraft und Zuversicht, um das Neue, zu dem Gott sie führen will, zu wagen!

gen der österreichischen und der philippi-nischen Gemeinde herzlich ein, in der Wie-nerfeldgasse 11, 1100 Wien, gemeinsam mit den Gläubigen dort einen Ort aufzub-auen, an dem wir uns alle wieder zu Hause fühlen können.

Die Gemeinde Salvator am Wienerfeld und wir sind gefordert, dort gemeinsam Zeugnis für Christus zu geben. Das Leben an einem Ort, wo weniger Platz ist als wir gewohnt sind, wird von allen Beteiligten viel Geduld fordern und nicht ohne Miss-verständnisse und Reibereien möglich sein. Ich bin aber überzeugt, dass wir in der Pfarre Salvator am Wienerfeld bei allen damit verbundenen Mühen auch wachsen und profitieren können und viele neue Chancen bekommen.

Wenn wir dort heimisch werden, bleiben wir trotzdem weiter gefordert. Denn wir sind mitten in einem Neubeginn und bereiten uns vor, lebendige Gemeinden in der Pfarre "Christus am Wienerberg" zu werden, die mit 1. September 2015 errichtet werden soll.

Als "Parish Priest" möchte ich alles fördern,

was an Gutem vorhanden ist, und beitragen, dass die Menschen rund um uns staunend feststellen: "Seht, wie sie einander lieben!"

In der Kirche Maria vom Berge Karmel feiern wir zum letzten Mal die Heilige Messe am Christkönigssonntag, den 23. November 2014, um 10.30 Uhr. Dazu lade ich die Gläubigen der philippinischen und der österreichischen Gemeinde herzlich ein. Wir wollen danken für alles Schöne, das wir dort erfahren durften, und um die Gnade und Kraft bitten, dass wir weiterhin an dem neuen Platz, der uns zur Verfügung steht, Weltkirche leben können. Als Kinder des guten Vaters im Himmel, sind wir Schwestern und Brüder – ohne Unter-schied von Herkunft, Sprache, Alter, Beruf und wirtschaftlichen Verhältnissen. Lasst uns einfach Gottes Familie sein in Wien.

Der Orden der Karmeliter mit Sitz in Bam-berg in Deutschland hat im September 2014 Kirche und Kloster auf dem Stefan Fadinger Platz an die syrisch orthodoxen Christen in Wien verkauft. Bei aller Trauer über den Verlust unserer Heimstätte ist es ein kleiner Trost, dass die Kirche wenigstens ein christliches Gotteshaus bleibt und keine Lagerhalle wird. Wir müssen Abschied nehmen vom Stefan Fadinger Platz: die Gemeinde Maria vom Berge Karmel und die Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy, die dort seit September 2003 beheimatet gewesen ist. Nicht nur mich schmerzt dieser Verlust sehr. Aber ich bin froh und dankbar, dass es möglich ist, dass mich viele Menschen in meine neue Pfarre begleiten, die mir in den letzten vier Jahren sehr lieb geworden sind. Bis spätestens Ende November 2014 werden Father Ely, Father Bong und Father Dong Dong sowie die Pfarrsekretärin der Karmel-Pfarre, Frau Rosalinda Gonzales, in das Haus der Pfarre "Salvator am Wienerfeld" einziehen. Moving on with God — A reflection

knowing fully well how they feel—provided them with visual proof that He is always with them: a pillar of cloud during the day and fire during the night as their protection against the army of the pharaoh. He sent them manna and quails to alleviate their hunger as they wandered in the desert, and He ordered Moses to build a totem that provided healing and deliverance to anyone who had been bitten by a snake and looked at it.

Upon reflection, I came to realize that the beginning of the Filipino Chaplaincy in Vienna was brought about by our own exodus from the Philippines. Most of us wanted to flee from the bondage of pov-erty, deprivation and lack of opportuni-ties which hindered our personal growth and that of our family, as well. Armed with courage, love of family and faith in God, we dared venture into the un-known in search of a better life in Aus-tria. In Vienna, God guided us towards the Filipino Chaplaincy and in so doing, we were able to find peace and solace in

times of distress, loneliness or despair. The church became a home away from home.

But now the Filipino Chaplaincy is physi-cally moving to its new home. There is again much turmoil and angst among us because we are leaving the safe, secure and familiar place where we spent years worshiping God in peace and joy. Afraid of what the change will bring, we face the future with much trepidation. How-ever, let us have faith that God is with us

as we move on to a new chapter of our lives. Let us believe that He is always with us and will nev-

er abandon us. As God provided for the Israelites in the desert, He will send us manna from heaven for sustenance and the totem for healing and deliverance. We need not be afraid.

Let us feel inside our hearts His pillar of cloud and fire continuously guiding us towards the Promised Land. Armed with the belief in the promise of a generous, compassionate and loving God, we will continue our journey.

Before the year 2014 ends, the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy will move from Ma-ria vom Berge Karmel parish which has been its home for the last 11 years. The Filipino parishioners naturally are appre-hensive about what is in store for the future of the Chaplaincy. Most of us are scared, sad or even confused about what lies ahead. I would like to see it as a grace from God, as God’s hand guiding us to where He wants us to be.

In the Bible, there are several stories which involve leaving, or moving from one place to another, for various reasons. The story of Abraham is a classic example. He was called by God from the land of Ur to lead his clan and his people to the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and hon-ey. His is the belief that in God the reali-zation of the covenant will find its fulfil-ment. And of course there is the story of the Exodus wherein the people of Israel, though fully aware of their deliverance from bondage, were still full of fear and uncertainty over what lies ahead. They often questioned God as they plodded along their journey, especially when they experienced difficulties and trials along the way. Hence, the sending of snakes to punish them for their unbelief. Loving God and loving others — towards a deeper spirituality within the community

To love God and others simply implies living the Gospel of Love so much so that everything I say or do – even my jokes – becomes or at least should be Good News that uplifts and builds souls. The Evangelist John (13:12-15) holds that humble service is love. Our Master Jesus has already given us the perfect example. A commu-nity built and woven in service of each other is a community where the love of God permeates and inspires everything and everyone. John continues (34-35) that true love is our unspoken Christian identity. There is no better way to introduce ourselves as Christians than through charity and humility towards one another. Our Love for one another connects us back to its source and origin – God (1John 4:7-12). Only through our brothers and sisters can we concretely serve God (John 19-20). Matt 25:31-46 – God allows us to serve Him through the needy around us. Through them He lets us see and touch Him, and without whom it would be almost impossible for anyone to meet Him.

Luke 10:25-37 – Love overrides and overcomes everything, even Law. Interestingly, our modern society is comprised of members that, humanly speaking, hail from varied parts of planet earth. How could we harmoniously and helpfully live together if it were not for love? We are all strangers towards one another. In God,

nonetheless, we are family – brothers and sisters. Our distinctive tribal, racial or religious backgrounds no longer alienate us. Love breaks every human barrier. James 2:14-20 – Love moves one with pity to alleviate the suffering of others. It may be a far-fetched notion to speak of material poverty in our context here in Austria. In my opinion, however, poverty is not only lack of mate-rial wealth. So many of us are suffering from the poverty of friend-ship, love, peace of mind and human relationships. These, I think, may even be more painful than just not having wealth or money. Several of our sisters and brothers are yearning for someone who is ready to listen to them, listen to their story, offer them hope and assure them of companionship. Unfortunately, our communi-ties have grown cold, our hearts are closed. Sometimes, we man-age to superficially wish one another well, but does that suffice? At least not according to St James! We ought always to remember that the nearer and more helpful we are towards one another, subsequently the closer we are to God. We have within us so much God-given energy, love and warmth that has the power to heat up our communities and enable everyone around us to expe-rience the Summer of love, friendship and sense of belonging.

Prayer for the Process of the Beatification of the Servant of God

Almighty and ever-living God, it was Your grace and the love of You that made Your servant Teofilo Camomot devote his life to Your service as priest and bishop, a life of self-abnegation, constant prayer and generous love for the poor and the needy.

Grant that his virtues provide a lasting example for all and merit the approval of the Church that he be raised to the altars.

As a sign of Your benevolence to Your servant‘s cause, we humbly implore You to bestow upon us this favour ... (mention your request) in the name of Jesus, our Lord who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Even before he died in a road accident on 27 September 1988, Archbishop Teofilo (his name means "lover of God") Camomot of Carcar, Cebu had the repuation of being a holy man. "God is in the Heart", a book published in 2013 by the Daughters of St. Teresa and Angela Blardonay Ureta describe his life and pastoral ministry. Throughout his life he humbly performed miracles, and 20 years after his death his body was still intact. His simplicity has been attested to by so many people, even fellow prelates., and there are several testimonies about Archbishop Camomot‘s bilocation.

were intrinsic to a pilgrimage, the modern pilgrim has an abundance of comfortable travel options. Yet the purpose is still a jour-ney to a sacred place, ushering the pilgrim into the presence of God.

The pilgrim must embark with joyful anticipa-tion, willing to turn away from the world, offering himself in humble service to others. A successful pilgrimage is a commitment to leave one’s problems behind, seeking instead to learn more about our heavenly Father, filling one’s heart with the desire for special

graces, praises, petitions, and thanksgiving, returning home transformed, renewed and restored by the abundant blessings received.

A pilgrimage is a time of prayer, of bearing witness to the miraculous signposts that God has left for our return to Him. Ask God to bless you, as you open your heart to the graces He desires to shower upon your pil-grimage. The success of your spiritual journey will depend upon your openness, faith, flexi-bility and love.

A pilgrimage is far more than just a tour: it is a personal invitation from God. The call may vary but the purpose remains the same — it is an individual summons to know God more fully. It is a spiritual journey to which the pilgrim joyfully responds “yes”.

Pilgrimages, journeys to sacred places for religious motives, are as old as civilization. Since the earliest times they have been made as acts of devotion, penance, or thanksgiving or in search of blessings or miracles.

Youth Ministry

Youth leaders Christian Abainza and Paulo Dacillo attended Fachtagung Weltkiche held 25-26 July 2014 at Stift Lambach. This year‘s theme was "Jugend will leben", with three resource speakers from Northern India, Lesotho and El Salvador expounding on their experiences in setting up youth ministries under difficult social circumstances. Exchanging notes with representatives of 7 Austrian youth groups who presented their work at the conference, Christian and Paulo gained impulses for future activities of this Ministry.

We continue to participate actively in FCC Community Masses by reading the Prayers of the Faithful and acting as collectors. Also, our relatively new Youth Choir provides the music for the Community Mass on the 4th Sunday of every month.

Some of the youths who received the Sacrament of Confirmation in May have signified their intent to become Youth Leaders under

this Ministry and we are planning to organize the relevant training for them.

Over 30 youths played basketball, badminton, football, table football and beach volleyball on Sports Day, held on 8 August.

This year‘s celebration coincided with the Archdiocese of Vienna‘s "Jesus March", held in Vienna‘s central district, and culminating with an elaborate late-afternoon stage performance at Vienna‘s Stephansplatz.

The novenary evening masses started on 12 September, the fluvial event to the church of St. Veit in Krems (Wachau) took place on 20 September and the thanksgiving mass was said on Sunday, 21 September at the church of Maria vom Berge Karmel. Our Lady has accompanied us on our journey as a Community, and we pray for her continued protection. Lay Ministers

The Lay Ministers took a break from their normal duties to spend a day in communion with nature at Hohe Wand in Lower Austria. Father Ely, Father Victor Tamayo and Father

Douglas Ndumba set the pace for the hike through the woods to reach the main attaction of the area: Skywalk.

This year, there are 60 Lay Ministers who share the duties of greeting parishioners as the latter arrive for the Community Mass, taking up the collection, providing lector services, and helping to distribute the Host at holy

communion. With thanks to Father Bong, we were able to start the Cantor Ministry which is now a regular feature of our Community Mass, and has been welcomed by our parisioners.

With the availability of so many choirs, it is possible to provide music for the liturgical services at the various loca-tions/times for which we have the responsibility for saying the Holy Mass, (e.g., the 7 p.m. anticipated Mass at St. Stephen’s Cathedral) including all the novenary masses for the various cele-

brations of feast days that we observe as a Filipino Community. We are grateful to Father Bong Alejo for over-all direction of the Music Min-istry, and to Cristina (Bonnie) Famarin for coordinating the complex choir assignments!

The FCC Choir held con-certs at Barcelona, Nice and Cannes in late July and early August 2014. The concerts were arranged together with the local communities and featured a varied repertoire, with the use of guitar, rainmak-er, ankle bells, cabasa and congo drums for accompa-niment. They were attend-ed not only by our kaba-bayans but also by Spanish and French nationals, who expressed much apprecia-tion for the performances. Not only did the Choir bring prestige and honor to the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy, which it repre-sents, but the journey was also a chance for the choir members to gain more experience and to be able to broaden their horizons. Mention must be made that the Chap-laincy is fortunate to have within this ministry the choirs of CFC, CFC-FFL, FGS, "Donaucity", El Shaddai and —lately— the Youth Ministry choir.

The photo shows CFC-FFL Vienna delegates to the 17th CFC-FFL European Conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia on Sept. 26-28 2014. It was a very spirit-filled weekend attended by almost 600 participants from all over Europe and Elders from the Philippines. The Holy Sunday Mass was concelebrated by 9 priests with Bishop Stanislav Lipocsek of the Diocese of Celje as main celebrant. This year's theme was "Called, Commissioned, Em-powered". Frank Padilla our Servant General em-phasized that being the people of God, we are

called to be holy, to be saints. Being the instru-ments of God, we are called to be His witnesses.

Chaplaincy‘s participation in the Archdiocese of Vienna‘s now traditional Familienwallfahrt to the Parish of Maria Brunn. This event was organized by the office of Aux. Bishop Franz Scharl, and was also attended by parishioners from other

(including Austrian) communities.

Together with other communities worldwide, we held in late August at the Donaupark the annual ANCOP Global Walk to raise funds for the education of impoverished children in the Philippines. This is the 2nd time that we organized this event and we are especially happy to have had the participation of kababayans who are not CFC members. Proceeds are remitted directly to the ANCOP coordinating office in Manila.

Our CFC and Servants of the Lord European Conference was held this year in Eretria, Greece. It was

exhilarating to meet again with our brethren from other European countries, praising the Lord and renewing our commitment to CFC programmes.

Couples for Christ continues its pastoral programmes for the family through its groups Kids for Christ, Youth for Christ, Singles for Christ, Handmaids of the Lord and Servants of the Lord.

This year we were able to organize our choir, which has since not only provided the music for several Community Masses but is also called to provide the ice-breakers for the Chaplaincy‘s Lenten and Advent retreats.

On 10 August we had an anniversary celebration in Biberach, where Bro. Leo Abu and Sis. Girlie Cadacio gave inspirational talks. We organized for the first time an overnight praise and worship service on 16-17 August, which was attended also by guests from the Ulm, Zurich, Milan and Munich chapters.

Some of our members attended the 21 September anniversary celebration of the Frankfurt chapter. This year, our member Sis. Ebeng Villaruz was chosen as the Hermana Mayor for the celebrations of the

Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.

The focus of this lay religious group is to encourage the devotion to our Blessed Mother, specifically in praying the Holy Rosary. We distribute rosaries at various Community activities, organize the praying of the Holy Rosary before the Community Mass on Sundays especially during the month of October.

We promote the devotion to the Divine Mercy, especially on the first and last Fridays of the month when we recite the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy at the image at Maria vom Berge Karmel church. We bring the image of the Divine Mercy to the homes of Filipino families, and teach especially the children how to pray. One of our apostolates is the support on Tuesdays of Caritas Wien‘s LeO project at the parish of Emmaus am Wienerberg, where we sort and help to distribute goods to the needy. In addition to celebrating the Feast of the Divine Mercy in April, we also actively support the Chaplaincy‘s activities for and with the Community.

Divine Mercy Devotees

Traditionally the Community has a Living Rosary (all beads represented by community members) on the last Sunday in October.

Biennially we coordinate the celebration of Santacruzan, a Filipino tradition involving a procession held in May to commemorate the finding by Queen Helena, Emperor Constantine‘s mother, of the true Holy Cross.

We have reached out to kababayans not living in Vienna, bringing images of our Blessed Mother to their families and especially teaching their children to pray the rosary.

Much effort has gone towards supporting the development of the community in Wiener Neustadt which is now in its 2nd year. In particular, the

community was recently able to establish its own Praesidium. In July we held a retreat in Wr. Neustadt at which Father Douglas Ndumba gave the spiritual impulse on the topic of "Loving God and loving others".

In August, we supported the foundation in Oslo, Norway of a new Praesidium.

Closer to home, we hold regular Patrician rounds on the contents of Pope Francis‘ "Joy of the Gospel", to which all interested parties are

heartily invited.

Together, our three Praesidia (headed by Menchie de Leon, Vangie Wolf and Chato Mina) in the Chaplaincy form one Curia that attends meetings of the Senatus (Archdiocese level).

Our apostolate work includes supporting the activities of the Chaplaincy‘s Youth Ministry, providing floral decorations for the church of Maria vom Berge Karmel, helping patients at the Fortuna Home for the Aged on Holbeingasse attend Holy Mass on Fridays.

Legion of Mary

Founded in 1999 by (the then Chaplain) Father Jose Demoy, this group is a Catholic Faith Renewal Ministry whose main goal is to educate Filipino Catholics in Vienna about their responsibilities as Christians. The Followers are divided into cell groups that meet twice a month to learn to pray in a more meaningful and heartfelt manner. Prayers are offered

not only for our members and their loved ones but also for others, including those who may be difficult to accept.

Every month, FGS members attend a cell meeting, a general cell meeting and a general assembly to strenthen the spirit of belonging to a community. We also have an Annual Family Day celebration.

We actively support the Chaplaincy‘s various community activities and fund-raising campaigns, and have a choir that takes its share of assignments for the Chaplaincy‘s community masses and religious services.

On 28 June 2014, FGS participated in the ARGE-AAG‘s Tag der Begegnung hosted this year by the communities in and around Petronell Carnuntum in Burgenland. The whole-day activity is held annually and presents an opportunity for the non-German speaking communities of ARGE-AAG to meet Austrian communities in deaneries outside of Vienna for a socio-cultural exchange.
