Quality Flexible Metal Hose

Introduction to Flexible Metal Hose

Convoluted Technologies flexible metal hose, is hydraulically formed from 316L stainless steel material. It is fitted with a 304 stainless steel outer braid. Other grades of material are available on request.

PressureMetallic hose can be used without braid for vacuum or low pressure applications. To resist higher pressures and prevent the hose from elongating one or two braids can be fitted over the hose, no further pressure resistance is gained with additional layers of braid. See the technical data charts which can be found on pages 10-12 for the maximum working pressures.

Maximum Working Pressure of metallic hose is 25% of the burst pressure stated in the technical data charts.

Test Pressure of a metallic hose is 1.5 times the maximum working pressure for a hydraulic test. For a pneumatic test the pressure is equal to 10% of the service pressure or 200kPa whichever is lower.

Burst Pressure actual - failure of the hose is determined by the laboratory test in which the braid fails in tensile or the hose ruptures due to the internal pressure applied. This test is usually conducted at room temperature with the assembly in a straight line.

Pressure Loss in metallic corrugated hose is about 150% higher than rigid piping, this is due to the shape of the corrugations. This could be a significant factor in longer lengths of hose and can be solved by using the next size hose upwards with rigid reducers on either end to meet up with the nominal size required.

The Flow Velocity in corrugated metal hose should never exceed 45m/sec for gas or 22m/sec for liquids. When a hose is installed in a bent condition, the flow values should be reduced by 25% for a 45° bend or 50% for a 90° bend. Where the flow velocity exceeds these rates, an interlocked metal hose liner or larger hose I.D. is recommended.

Pulsating Pressure - A rapid change in pressure above and below the normal base pressure, usually associated with reciprocating type pumps, causes excessive wear between the braid and the crests of the hose corrugations.

Shock Pressure - A sudden increase of pressure in a hydraulic or pneumatic system which produces a shock wave, can cause severe permanent deformation of the corrugations in a hose, as well as rapid failure of the assembly due to metal fatigue. The peak of this shock pressure should not exceed 50% of the maximum working pressure stated in the technical data charts.

The advantage of flexible metal hose compared to other materials is its capability to withstand a large temperature range from -270°C to +816°C.

As the operating temperature of a metal hose assembly increases, the maximum allowable working pressure of the assembly decreases. The pressure ratings shown in the specifications charts for corrugated hose are valid at 20°C. Elevated service temperatures will decrease these pressure ratings. To find the allowable working pressure at a particular temperature, the maximum working pressure at 20°C should be multiplied by the appropriate factor from the chart below.

Motion in Flexible Metal Hoses

Random Motion is non-predictable and occurs from the manual handling of a hose assembly. Care must be taken to prevent over-bending of the hose and to avoid external abrasion of the wire braid. An armour covering of pig tail, lay flat or spring wire provides protection against these abuses. Contact our sales staff for more information on these products.

Axial Motion occurs when there is extension or compression of the hose along its longitudinal axis. This type of motion is restricted to unbraided corrugated hose only. For higher working pressures, a braided hose is required and this movement is accommodated by travelling loops.

Angular Motion occurs when one end of a hose assembly is deflected in a simple bend with the ends not remaining parallel.

To find the Live Hose Length: • L = πRø/180 + 2(S) • L = Live Hose Length (mm) • π = 3.1416 • R = Minimum Dynamic Bend Radius (mm) • ø = Angular Deflection (degrees) • S = Hose O.D.(mm)

Offset Motion occurs when one end of the hose assembly is deflected in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis with the ends remaining parallel. This movement can be due to a one-time (static) bend or movement which repeatedly occurs slowly over time (such as thermal expansion).

• The appropriate formula to use to calculate Live Hose Length depends on the condition of the moving end.

• When the offset motion occurs on both sides of the hose centreline, use total travel in the formula: i.e 2 x “T”

• The offset distance “T” for constant flexing should never exceed 25 percent of the centreline bend radius “R”

• If the difference between “L” and “Lp” is significant, exercise care at installation to avoid stress on hose and braid at the maximum offset distance.

L = Live Hose Length (mm) Lp = Projected Live Hose Length (mm) R = Minimum Dynamic Bend Radius (mm) T = Offset Motion to One Side of Centreline (mm)

Minimum Bend Radius Occurs at In Line Position The moving end of the hose is restricted to move only up and down in line as the hose crosses neutral position. To find the live hose length:

L = √20(RT)

Lp = √L2 - T 2

Travelling Loops in a piping system is where axial movements must be accommodated or where the magnitude of the motion is in excess of the limits of an offset movement, the travelling loop configuration offers an ideal solution. In travelling loops, the centreline of a hose assembly is bent in a circular arc. Travelling loops accommodate movement in one of two ways.

1. A constant radius travelling loop accommodates motion by varying the length of the arms of the assembly while the radius remains constant.

2. A variable radius travelling loop accommodates motion by varying the bend radius of the hose assembly. Both types of travelling loops can be installed to absorb either horizontal or vertical movement. The constant radius travelling loop provides for greater movement while the variable radius travelling loop requires less installation space.

Production Testing / Documentation / Inspection

Testing and certification requirements need to be discussed with our sales team at time of quoting as we have several levels of additional services available to our customers.

All flexible metal hoses we manufacture at Convoluted Technologies get tested before we dispatch our goods.

Vacuum leak test: If you don’t require certification you can ask for a vacuum test this is the cheapest and fastest method to assure the product has not defects at time of dispatch of the goodsAngular Motion occurs when one end of a hose assembly is deflected in a simple bend with the ends not remaining parallel.

Hydrostatic Pressure Test: A method to detect any sign of leakage or any other mode of failure of the hose by applying 1.5 times the maximum working pressure stated in the technical data chart of the hose or limited by the end fitting components whichever is lower certified and tagged in accordance of the ISO 10380 standard on our pressure calibrated test rigs.

Pneumatic Leakage Test: This test will find the smallest sign of leakage that does not show on the Hydraulic Pressure Test. The test has its restrictions on the pressure due to the dangers involved with compressed gas. The pressure during this test will be 10% of the working pressure or 200kPa, whichever is lower certified and tagged in accordance of the ISO

Dye Penetrant Inspection or Test: A method for detecting surface irregularities such as cracks, voids, porosity, etc. The surface to be checked is coated with a red dye that will penetrate existing defects. Dye is removed from the surface and a white developer is applied. If there is a defect in the surface being checked, the red dye remaining in it will cause the white developer to be stained, therefore locating the defective area. We can do this in house or provided by a accredited third party.

Radiography: Radiography of full penetration piping butt welds (not including the hose to fitting joint) to our AS/NZ 3992 and ASME-IX, weld procedures, provided by a accredited third party. The welding will be performed by fully trained pre qualified welders.

Positive Material Identification (PMI): We have fully licences staff who can perform PMI readings of the material grades before we weld the items together.

Quality Flexible Metal Hose

Flexible Metal hoses are the ideal solution for cryogenic applications.

They handle the negative temperatures, the fully sealed stainless steel construction stops any gas permeating out of the assembly and with a large selection of hose available to us we can cover most of the required pressure ratings.

Testing Cleaning Drying Bagging and Certification of Cryogenic hose assemblies. All hoses offered to the cryogenic industry would be hydrostatic strength proof tested to assure that the product supplied is fit for purpose.

Teflon (PTFE) hose assemblies The use of the stainless steel braided PTFE flexible hoses is often requested for the transport of the cryogenic gas at high pressures commonly in the smaller diameters. For these applications is essential that the PTFE hoses not only resistant to extreme temperatures and pressures, but also that they have acceptable resistance to permeation. PTFE has a temperature range from -70°C + 260°C.

Fittings and Accessories

• Cryogenic CGA fittings are made out of Brass or Stainless steel material

• CGA FITTINGS fully designed for safe and reliable cryogenic liquid transfer

Cryogenic Composite hose assemblies These hose assemblies preserve high flexibility and pressure even at extremely low temperatures. In addition, they are recognised for little to no formation of frost or freezing due to their heat-retaining properties.

Cryogenics Code 933 composite hose is manufactured to the IMO standard for the transfer of LNG at -165°C acetaldehyde, ammonia, butadiene, butane, butane / propane mixtures, butylene, dimethylamine, ethyl chloride, ethylene, ethylene oxide, methyl acetylene-propadiene mixture, methyl bromide, methyl chloride, nitrogen, propane, propylene, refrigeration gases and vinyl chloride.

Temperature Range: -200°C up to 50°C the IMO standard nominate the pressure and temperature rating.

Cryogenics Composite Code 940 is developed around the AS/NZS 1869 standard for the transfer of hose assemblies for liquefied petroleum gases LPG at -42°C (liquid and gaseous phases), natural gas, town gas manufactured from oil products natural gas, town gas.

Temperature Range: -50°C up to 65°C the IMO standard nominate the pressure and temperature rating.

Cryogenic Applications

Cryogenic Applications

Critical Applications such as supplying commercial oxygen require the expertise of an experienced metal hose manufacturer. Oxygen Lance Hoses are fabricated to meet this critical application. They are available in sizes from 1/4” to 12”, and when specified our fabrication department can customise the hose assembly to include a liner (to reduce turbulence resulting from high velocity), reinforced ends or special end fittings. Each hose assembly is cleaned and capped for commercial oxygen service.

Optional Hose Protection These hose assemblies preserve high flexibility and pressure even at extremely low temperatures. In addition, they are recognised for little to no formation of frost or freezing due to their heat-retaining properties.

1) Abrasion Protection of the inner hose assembly

2) It acts as an extra temperature insulation limiting formation of frost

3) Limiting the over bending of the hose in one spot without losing the flexibility of the assembly

4) Due to the smooth outer cover, it is not prone to being caught and damaged by manual handling

5) It acts as an additional safety measure in case of a hose failure; it diffuses the energy released.

6) Similar weight, as amour wire

Other options consist of Conventional:Galvanised or stainless spring guard protective wire, HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) Spiral Guard, or red silicone coated thermal protective sleeving.

Special AssembliesJacketed or Duplex Hose assemblies are a hose within a hose. Both inner and outer hoses act independently as separate pressure carriers. Vacuum Jacketed Hose Assemblies are typically found in cryogenic applications because of their insulation properties. Steam Jacketed Hose Assemblies are utilised when the media is viscous and steam is used to help reduce viscosity and increase flow. Jacketed hoses are also used in applications where containment of the media is critical in case of rupture of the inner hose.

Convoluted Technologies has the capability to design hose assemblies to meet pressures higher than published ratings and also has special grades of material e.g. Monel, Bronze or Inconel. If your requirements exceed published criteria, contact our staff and we will help determine if a suitable hose and braid design can be engineered to meet your specification.

Vibration Eliminators with female copper tube ends are cleaned, dehydrated and capped for refrigeration service.

Bottom Loading Hoses for loading and unloading of road tankers.

Bitumen Hoses. Convoluted Technologies manufactures various products for the bitumen industry e.g. Spray bar connectors, hand bar hoses and bituminous transfer hoses. These hoses need to comply with a pressure rating at elevated temperatures. We also supply a hose management program for these products as they fall under the dangerous goods act.

Avoid torqueDo not twist the hose assembly during installation when aligning the bolt holes in a flange or in making up pipe threads. The utilisation of rotating flanges on stub ends, pipe unions or female swivels will minimise this condition. It is recommended that two wrenches be used in making the union connection; one to prevent the hose from twisting and the other to tighten the coupling.

In plane lateral offset installation.Prevent out-of-plane flexing in an installation. Always install the hose so that the flexing takes place in only one plane. This plane must be the plane in which the bending occurs.

Installation Instructions

Provide support.

When installing the assembly in a horizontal loop, provide support for the arms to prevent the hose from sagging.

Do not extend or compress axially.

A piping system which utilises metal hose to absorb movement must be properly anchored and/or guided. Always support the piping to prevent excessive weight from compressing the hose and relaxing the braid tension.

Handle with care.

Avoid careless handling of the hose assembly. Always lift or carry the metal hose to prevent abrasion damage particularly to braided corrugated hose. Store metal hose assemblies away from areas where it can be subjected to spillage, corrosive fumes, sprays or weld splatter, etc.

Do• Follow industry recommended practices and use

care in handling and installing flexible assembly.

• Install flexible assembly so that the bend is as close to the centre of the assembly as possible.

• Observe the minimum bend radius as specified in the technical data charts.

• Trial-fit threaded connections by hand, unmake and then make permanent.

• Use a flexible assembly of proper length to suit the installation.

• Only use a wrench on the fitting hex flats as provided.

• Design the installation to allow for ground movement after installation.

• Install the proper length assembly to allow a 2” straight run of hose at each end fitting.

• Use pipe wrenches on both mating hexes to avoid twisting the hose.

• Keep hose free from all objects and debris.

• Handle and store the assembly carefully prior to installation.

• Install in such a manner that the assembly can be removed.

• Make sure the pressure rating of the assembly is not exceeded.

Don’t• Apply a wrench to a hose collar or assembly.

• Twist hose assemblies during installation or when aligning the bolt holes in a flange or when making up pipe threads.

• “Pre-flex” a flexible assembly to limber it up. Over-bending could cause damage and result in leaking.

• Over-bend a flexible assembly. A 45°-90° bend should be sufficient to install any flexible connector.

• Install a flexible assembly with the bend next to the end fittings. This could cause damage and result in leakage.

• Lay the flexible assembly on rocks or objects which could puncture the hose and cause leakage.

Chemical Resistance Data

This information may be used as a guide for the selection of flexible metal hose and of fitting material suitable for conveying the substances listed. However, this data should not be construed as advice to use or not use without further testing or investigation since variations in service conditions can influence resistance to corrosion. The corrosion resistance of silver brazing alloys used to attach end fittings to metal hose may be considered equal to bronze in the table. Joints produced by welding end fittings to steel, stainless steel and monel hose may be considered equivalent to the corrosion resistance of the component parts.

Interpretation of Corrosion DataClass 1 Excellent ............................. Less than 0.0088mm penetration per month

Class 2 Good .................................... Between 0.0088mm to 0.088mm penetration per month

Class 3 Not suitable ....................... Greater than 0.088mm penetration per month*Subject to decomposition (Chlorine hydrogen) in presence of moisture **Subject to pitting at air line or when allowed to dry ***Subject to attack in presence of Sulfuric acid
