Common Mexican Stereotypes Found in Movies
By: Leslie J. de la Rosa
There are many Mexican
stereotypes found in
American movies. One trip to
our local movie rental store
proved just that.
At Blockbuster we found…
Rows upon rows filled with videos, many of which showed Mexican stereotypes on the cover.
Here we have the typical portrayal of what should be a Mexican character but in reality is not from Mexico.
Here we have the common portrayal of a Latina as a maid.
Here we, also, have the common portrayal of a Latina as a maid.
Here we have the common portrayal of a Mexican woman as the seductress.
Here we have the stereotype that all Mexicans like or are boxers.
Here we have the common stereotype that all Mexicans like or play soccer.
Here we have displayed one of the most common Mexican stereotypes, a man with mustache and machete.
But in many films the Mexican
Stereotypes do not appear on
the cover of the DVD, rather
they appear as lesser characters
within the film.
Such as in the movie Selena, where we see how two young Mexican males get portrayed as gangsters with tattoos.
As you can see Mexican
stereotypes do exist in
American films.
How many can you find…?
