Lucky Lane.

AddressLucky Lane 707 DublinIreland

. Two terraced mews houses, and a further two underconstruction, mark the beginnings of a new street on an existinglane in the dense inner city area of Stoneybatter, Dublin. Thenew mews houses are at the interface of artisan terraced housingof Carnew Street and larger terraced townhouses of AughrimStreet. In conversation with the existing returns of the artisandwellings onto the lane and the larger terraced townhouses to therear, a 'double return' mews typology is developed by employing areturn to both the front and rear of the new mews houses. Themassing of the houses, solid brick versus translucent screen andsliding door, begins an alternating rhythm onto the lane. Arepeating bracket-like party wall of light polychromatic stockbrick establishes the recurring structure and enclosure for thenew houses. In more private quarters on the ground floorfair-faced blockwork is employed.

A house.

AddressCambridge Road Dublin 6 DublinIreland

. Concerns of establishing a relationship with the garden andmaximising daylight penetration in a North facing building whereEast & West facades are blank, dictated the organisation offamily rooms at ground and first floor connected by a narrowvoid. This layout is expressed architecturally as a 'slipped tube' ofspace, coded materially in sandblasted concrete, stratified fromfront to rear, divided programmatically with joinery boxes. Astrong visual and spatial connection is established between thekitchen / dining room at ground level and the study on the firstfloor capitalising on day lighting and glimpsed views. This movecreates diagonal visual relationships that extend spatialawareness to the limits of the depth, breadth and length of thehouse. Arranged around this conceptually manipulated tube, arethe less public rooms: garage, utility room and WC at groundlevel and children?s bedrooms and bathroom at first floor.

Mews House.

AddressMorehampton Rd 7 DublinIreland

. A renovated Victorian House for the parents sharing a rear gardenwith a new Mews house for one of the daughters. The nowgrown-up family recently moved out of their long-term familyhome and wanted these new homes to maintain some sense ofcontinuity with their former lives. 2 Intertwined themes runthrough both homes, those of memory and tectonic expression.Their social rituals are given tangible form within the design.Typical domestic objects are distorted in material and scale toform a psychological landscape specific to the occupants.Construction is expressed directly as the finished product imbuingthese two new homes with a powerful, domestic character. TheMews house’s facade take it's key from the Flemish-bondbrickwork walls of the Victorian House, seeking a kind ofconstructional context with its older brother. The unique bondsare the result of ‘separating’ the Flemish bond into 2 layers, andconceptually situating the home in the space between these 2layers.

Housing Reuben Street.

AddressReuben Street 8 DublinIreland

. The pace at which certain parts of the city of Dublin are beingdeveloped is aggressively challenging the spatial and physicalmemory of Dubliners. This is certainly true in the Liberties, oneof the oldest parts of the city and the location of this housingscheme by FKL. Their strategy was to design two restrained,L-shaped red brick blocks and sit them down on a grey stone andmosaic tile plinth. This distinct separation of elements allows thislandmark to do what others often miss - to operatesimultaneously in the local and wider urban context. The solid, muscular masonry forms ensure this building is seen from aconsiderable distance, always maintaining a clear, non-reflectiveclean silhouette. FKL have made a seminal contribution toDublin's discussion about how to make a collection of homes thatstill offer individual expression.

Timberyard Social Housing.

. The Timberyard development consists of a new social housingscheme comprising of 47 dwellings and a street level communityfacility. It is situated in the historic Liberties area of Dublin, fronting on to the Coombe By-Pass. The site layout completesexisting and fragmented city blocks. It focuses on a public space, turning the former timberyard into a communicative space. Theseven-storey scale along Cork Street staggers and slopes down tothree storeys to match the smaller scale of the existing houses tothe north of the site. Materials make references to thesurrounding, red brick-dominated neighbourhood and the historyof the site as a timberyard. Concrete is introduced as anadditional material. The unites provide private open space in theform of private gardens, roof terraces and balconies cut into thebuilding volume. A small Marian grotto that previously stoodoutside the site can be now find in a short pedestrian passage.
