Construction continues  to be a highly competitive business. What’s changing  is  the  nature  of  that  competition  and  the  need  for organizations  to operate on a 24/7 basis.  It’s no  longer enough  to work  harder  –  companies  must  work  smarter.  That  means establishing  standard document operating  procedures, automating workflows  and  capturing  and  sharing  best  practices.  Dealing  with documents and  information  in any project can be one of  the most challenging issues faced by the project team.

A  recent  study  by  Pricewaterhouse  Coopers  reports  that  average worker spends 40% of their time managing non essential documents

while  IDC estimates employees  spend 20% of  their day  looking  for information in hardcopy documents and 50% of the time they can’t find what they need.

MICA is the first Project Management Consultant who advocates and introduces professional courses in Sustainable Construction and Green Building. As a pioneer  in  introducing Green Building to the construction  industry  in Qatar, MICA organizes training course and workshops  entitled  “Sustainable  construction  and  Green  Building”.  The  workshops  are  designed  to  educate  building  industry professionals about sustainable design principles and construction practices embodied in the Green Building rating system.

Green Building SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

WATER EFFICIENCY

ENERGENCY & ATMOSPHERE

MATERIALS & RESOURCES

INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

INNOVATION IN DESIGN

TRAINING All  Green  Building  recognized  areas  are  covered including:

• Sustainable site development

• Water efficiency

• Energy and atmosphere

• Materials and resources

• Indoor environmental quality and,

• Innovation in design

The workshops cover  the Green Building  rating  system  in  sufficient details  for  the participants  to  take and pass the Green Building AP examinations. For contracting companies, such workshops will further establish them as a leader in Green construction  in Qatar and in Gulf Region. Breakthroughs  in building science, technology, and operations are now available to designers, builders, operators, and owners who want to build green and maximize both economic and environmental performance.

Green  building  practices  significantly  reduce  or  eliminate  the  negative impact of buildings on the environment and occupants in five broad areas:

• Sustainable site planning

• Safeguarding water and water efficiency

• Energy efficiency and renewable energy

• Conservation of materials and resources

• Indoor environmental quality   In addition to  reducing  the  impact of buildings on  the environment, green

buildings  increase  productivity  of  building  occupants,  improve  energy efficiency, reduce building operation and maintenance cost, improve indoor environmental quality, and minimize resource usage during the construction and operation of the building. Mica  believes  that  Green  Building  training  is  important  to  promote integrated,  whole‐building  design  practices,  to  raise  the  construction industry  awareness  of  green  building  benefits  and  to  ensure  successful development of green buildings.    Mica works to raise awareness in green building and works with owners to qualify their buildings to be classified as green building and friendly environment.

CONSULTANCY Consultancy  in  qualifying  existing  buildings  or  those under  construction  to  green  building  certificate: More

than  one‐third  of  energy  is  consumed  in  buildings worldwide,  responsible  for  about  15  percent  of  global greenhouse  gas  emissions.  In  cities,  buildings  can account for up to 80 percent of CO2 emissions.

MICA  Qatar  continues  to  develop  its  portfolio  of project  and  engineering  consulting  services  by offering Commissioning services to its clients here in Qatar.  Building  commissioning  is  an  important  quality assurance  service  in  the  building  industry. Commissioning  is  being  integrated  into  the construction  process  to  ensure  that  owners  and investors get good buildings for their investments.   It  is a method of risk reduction for new construction projects  or  major  capital  improvements  (i.e. renovations) and it is a comprehensive way to assess and tune up performance of existing buildings.

Commissioning is an increasingly important discipline today as building owners look to optimize their investment!

INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE  Our consultants have a number of years of experience in this  field  having  completed  Commissioning  related projects in Canada previously.    With climate change and the greater emphasis placed on green  building  technology  in  most  of  today’s  major projects, the role of Commissioning has become an even greater asset.

In  the West,  Commissioning has  played a big role  in helping  to  underline  the  importance  of  processes  in meeting  the  necessary  building  certification standards  and  in  turn  this  has  encompassed  green building standards as well.  MICA’s  experience  means  we  can  help  your organization  develop  its  Commissioning  framework and provide the necessary guidance to meet guideline standard.  Typically,  in  setting  up  a  successful  Commissioning framework,  an  organization  can  achieve operational savings of USD 4 over the first five years of occupancy as  a  direct  result  of  every  USD  1  invested  in commissioning.    This  is  an  excellent  return  on investment in any business model.

However, the cost of not utilizing Commissioning best practices is equal to the cost of correcting operational deficiencies plus the cost of operational inefficiency.

For a mission‐critical facility,  the cost of not utilizing Commissioning  can  be  measured  by  the  cost  of downtime and the lack of appropriate facility use.

MICA QATAR and OUR VALUE PROPOSITION TO YOU  MICA Qatar’s  core  value  proposition  to  our  clients  is  to always ensure that we offer the best possible solution to our clients.   As an ISO 9001:2008 certified organization, we practice what we preach and this has culminated  in our  considerable  success  in  delivering  solutions  to  our clients in and around the Gulf.  Talk to our consultants today  to determine how we can help your organization with our building commissioning services.

DISPUTE MANAGEMENT AND

RESOLUTIONFacilitating Claim Management, Arbitration,

Adjudication, Mediation and Schedule

Delay Analysis

CLAIMS PREPARATION AND

APPRAISALFull claims preparation service or guidance

ADJUDICATIONAdjudication is a quick and relatively cost-

friendly method of resolving disputes.

S E R V I C E S A V A I L A B L E Cost – especially if there is a

prolonged litigation or

arbitration – can bring about

a huge and totally

unnecessary impact to

project and the client.

MICA has the ability to bring

about a quick resolution by

managing your disputes by

analyzing your contractual

and legal standing, and

through fact-finding by

involving your project

personnel in proceedings.

With over 20 years of

experience in managing

projects in the construction

and oil and gas industries,

MICA Qatar has developed a

fluent understanding of the

fundamental aspects of

claim and dispute

management.

Often, disputes are mired in

a stand-off situation with

both effected parties

unwilling to reach a

compromise.

In this case, the situation

calls for the intervention of

a third-party to analyze and

bring the dispute to a quick

conclusion.

Page 28: Mica Qatar General Profile

te c hn ol o gy co n su l t in g

CLAIMS PREPARATION

APPRAISAL

In order to facilitate

proceedings, our team will

undertake the preparation of

key documents to support the

dispute.

MICA will also provide counsel

on any key issues raised in its

findings. This will also include

the development of key

strategy.

As such, MICA undertakes the

management of all your

dispute requirements thus

acting as your representative

while off-setting the need for

the case to be heard via

arbitration.

We understand that in a claim

or dispute, each case is a

unique proposition therefore

requiring specifically tailored

consulting services to ensure

a cost effective and succinct

resolution.

Regardless of your role, be-it

that of a contractor or an

owner, MICA will ensure that

our planned approach is in

accordance with your needs

as a client.

ADJUDICATION

Adjudication is a fairly new

practice in the Gulf but is

quite widely practiced

internationally.

Adjudication is the statutory

right given to every party to a

contract to refer a dispute to

an independent third party—

in this case, MICA— who will

function as the adjudicator.

MICA will present its finding

so that judgment can be

passed based on the

determined rights and

obligations between the

parties involved.

The adjudication procedure is

intended to deal with all

manner of disputes, including

delays, additional cost claims,

variations etc.

As one of the first to introduce

adjudication locally, we hope

to be able to increase the

awareness of this method of

dispute and claims settlement

as it is both a cost-effective

and can be a quick method of

resolution.
