• Provide a safe place for children after school in a Godly atmosphere
• Partner with families to positively influence the surrounding neighborhood
• Support the public school teachers efforts by helping students with daily assignments
Developing strong literacy skills is at the core of what we do at Micah House. Teaching our kids to read, then teaching them to LOVE to read is one of the secrets to the successes of the Micah House program.
Micah House got its name from the Bible verse found in Micah 6:8."He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you; but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?" By focusing on the spiritual and educational needs of our students we strive to put this verse into practice in very practical ways.
our name
We serve students at our two locations, Chapel Street and Oxford Drive.
Micah House after-school program serves children and youth from 1st through 12th grades. . Strategically located in low-income, high-crime neighborhoods Micah House provides a safe place to go after school. Students receive homework help, tutoring, literacy support, recreational activities, computer training, character-building skills, and nutritious snacks all at no cost to their families. Intentional partnership with families creates a positive influence in the surrounding community. Our staff and volunteers seek to support the efforts of the public school teachers and target literacy needs.

Literacy is not just about reading books, but about building strong skills using technology. Students are given opportuni-ties to practice computer literacy each week, ensuring they can keep up with peers who have computers at home.
Volunteers work with students one-on-one to ensure homework is completed and understood.
A generous grant from the Redlands Art Association provides exposure to different artistic
mediums and local artists.

Students are assessed at the beginning of the school year and we are able to strategically pinpoint areas of greatest concern. Our literacy coordinator then works with the school to set and meet yearly reading goals.
Volunteers read with students one-on-one to assist in tracking challenges in phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Students have the opportunity to not only read one-on-one, but partici-pate in comprehension and vocabulary games as well as games that en-courage thinking and strategy and help improve understanding and visual discernment.
We evaluate progress throughout the year to ensure students continue to advance in reading level and comprehension.
Students typically advance one reading level by the end of the year.
