Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month…There’s a tragic story nearly every day in the media about someone suffering from mental illness, hurting themselves or some-one else. We’ve all seen them, and they are becoming more frequent.

Mental Illness is described as a condition that impacts a person's thinking, feeling or mood and may affect his or her ability to relate to others and function on a daily basis. Each person will have differ-ent experiences, even people with the same diagnosis. Re-covery is possible; including meaningful roles in social life, school and work, especially when you start treatment early and play a strong role in your own recovery process.

But, it is important to know the symptoms of some of the more common behavioral dis-orders, especially in children. Here are just a few: conduct disorders; aggression to peo-ple and animals and destruc-tion of property, deceitfulness or stealing, serious violations of rules. Another common children’s disorder—Atten-t ion-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Fails to give close attention to details or

makes careless mistakes in school work or activities, dif-ficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play; often does not seem to listen or follow-through on instructions; has difficulty organizing tasks and activities; often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (e.g., schoolwork or homework).

Northeast Guidance Cen-ter (NEGC). at 20303 Kelly Rd., in Harper Woods, takes an entire 'family approach' to help children with severe behavioral difficulties live up to their full potential. The Children and Family Services

program offer comprehen-sive services to children from birth through age 17 as well as family support.

According to data from Community Network Services (CNS) and Northeast Guid-ance Center (NEGC), while one in five Americans lives with mental disorders, es-timates indicate that nearly two-thirds of all people with a diagnosable disorder do not seek treatment, especially people from diverse commu-nities. Why? Lack of knowl-edge and fear of rejection from members of the public, from friends, family and co-workers, and even at times from the very service systems that they turn to for help – all of which can have a more dev-astating impact on them than the illness itself.

NEGC and CNS will host an Anti – Stigma Forum to pro-mote Mental Health Aware-ness Month and create aware-ness for Human Trafficking on May 4. Keynote speaker will be Theresa Flores, Human Trafficking Survivor. For info call (313) 308-1416.

As NEGC says, 'Mental Health Awareness Month – Label Jars….Not People.'

Reach NEGC by calling (313) 245-7000.

SYMPHONIC NEWS

Ruth's Music Notes...Ruth Crystal-Zaromp

On Friday, May 5, 7:30 p.m., Pro Musica is pre-senting New Music Detroit (pictured) at the Cube at the Max. New Music Detroit is comprised of top talents from the Detroit region's classical music ranks. Call-ing themselves a 'musical collective, more than a for-mal ensemble,' New Music Detroit's primary mem-bers include Gina DiBello, violin; Ian Ding, percussion; Una O'Riordan, cello; Shan-non Orme, clarinets; and Erik Rönmark, saxophones. Each a virtuosic musician, the artists are active solo-ists and members of lead-ing symphonies such as the Detroit Symphony Orches-tra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the cultural and academic worlds. New Music Detroit was honored as a Kresge Arts Fellow in 2014. Concert Program: Karakurenai by Andy Aki-ho (b. 1979), Number 9 by Gabriella Smith (b. 1994), Gravity by Hadi Ayanbod (b. 1980), Mara's Lullaby (from Tight Sweater) by Marc Mel-lits (b. 1966), Prime by Marc Mellits. Chamber Music Society

Detroit is presenting Lise de la Salle, piano, on Friday, May 5, 8 p.m., at the Schaver Music Recital Hall of Wayne

State University in Detroit. Making her Detroit recital debut, Ms. de la Salle per-forms a program around the theme of love and love lost. The all-Romantic first half

also revolves around Franz Liszt. In addition to Liszt's dazzling transcriptions of songs by Schumann and Schubert, the program in-cludes Schumann's Fantasy in C major which, while first inspired by the composer's love for Clara Wieck, was ultimately dedicated to Franz Liszt and performed at an event designed to raise money for a monument to Beethoven that was champi-oned and supported by Liszt. The second half of her pro-gram consists of Prokofiev's brilliant piano arrangement of ten movements from his ballet Romeo and Juliet.Program: Schumann/Arr. Liszt: Liebeslied (Widmung), Schumann/Arr. Liszt: Früh-lingsnacht, Schubert/Arr. Liszt: Ständchen, Schumann: Fantasy in C major, Op. 17, Prokofiev: Ten Pieces for Piano from Romeo and Ju-liet, Op. 75. Post-concert dessert reception to follow. See CMSDetroit.org, or call (248) 855-6070. The Rackham High School

Vocal Intern Showcase is featuring Voices of Tomor-

row on Friday, May 5, 7:30 p.m., at the First Presbyte-rian Church, 529 Hendrie Blvd., in Royal Oak.These students are

coached and trained by the Rackham Choir to become more affluent and skilled in their singing abilities. Most of them, who are currently still in high school, mature to become full-time music students at known univer-sities, which in turn will hopefully help them in their future professional careers. If one wishes to become ac-

quainted with the beautiful voices of the coming years, I suggest that attending this performance will be a good step in the right direction. For more information,

check RackhamChoir.org.On May 7, the Ann Arbor

Symphony Orchestra will present its final program of the season, titled Verdi, Viva l’Italia. As the title suggests, all

items will have some con-nections to Italy, but in ad-dition to Choruses from Verdi’s operas – works by Rossini, Tchaikovsky and Respighi will be featured as well. The event will take place

at Hill Auditorium at 4 p.m. with long-time director Arie Lipsky conducting.
