Kermit Ambrose Award

We name this award after a man who was a founding father of MITCA in 1957. He held all the offices at one

time except that of the treasurer, and was our newsletter editor for 22 years. We remember Kermit for his

experiences at Birmingham Seaholm H.S., where he had an outstanding record before retiring from coaching

and later teaching in 1976. He has been an active track and cross country official upon retiring and served as

Officer Emeritus with MITCA until 1998.

Recipients of this award, and the Sweeney (track) Award, are members of the MITCA Hall of Fame. The

award is in recognition of their outstanding service to the sport, their school, the association and their

community. It is given to someone who epitomizes all that a coach is supposed to be. The Ambrose Award

winner receives a watch and a lifetime membership in MITCA.

To receive the award a person is nominated to the Executive Board in writing along with supporting

documentation. Support may come from a building principal, an opposing coach or other people connected to

the sport.

Nancy Grant - Alice Averill Award

This award is named after two wives of prominent members of MITCA who were very involved in the track and field,

and/or cross country programs at their husbands school. Much of their work was completed behind the scenes such as,

scoring the meets, setting up heats, helping at team camps, etc. This award is usually given to a spouse, (male or female)

but this is not a requirement. Anyone making a significant contribution to a program may be considered.

To receive this award a name should be submitted in writing to the Executive Board along with some notes regarding

why the person is worthy of the award. It is also advantageous to have some letters of support from others in the

community and/ or opposing coaches in the area if possible.

Finish Line Award

This award is given to a newspaper that has been a contributor to track and field or cross country. MITCA recognizes the fact

that without media coverage of our athletes and sport, many memories and recognition would be lost. To nominate your

newspaper simply drop a line to the Executive Board and explain why you believe the newspaper is worthy of this award. It

may be given to the newspaper or an individual who works at the newspaper.
