Opening in 2002, Hemlock Golf Clubis conveniently located just outside thecity of Ludington and is one of golf'sbest values. Designed by nationallyacclaimed architect Raymond Hearn,Hemlock Golf Club is very formidable18-hole, 7044-yard course from thechampionship tees and the epitome ofpicture perfect playable golf from theother four sets of teeing areas. Sculptedfrom natural landscape that featuresrolling topography, unspoiled wetlands, deciduous and evergreen forests, andunique sand dune formations, HemlockGolf Club has received rave reviewsfrom Golf Magazine, Golf Digest, andThe Wall Street Journal:

Golf Magazine named Hemlock GolfClub in the top 35 of 325 new coursesopened in the United States in 2002.

Golf Magazine March/2003

Despite its ominous name,Hemlock is a real treat.

Ron Whitten, Golf Digest

Ray Hearn won kudos from golf writ-ers for his Hemlock Golf Club inLudington, Michigan, where his lowprofile design challenges golfers withnarrow alleys, exposed sand dunes anddeceptively pitched greens.

Paulette Thomas, Wall Street JournalOctober/2002

The combination of these characteris-tics and the natural waste area is whatmakes Hemlock Golf Club one of themost unique golf experiences inMichigan.

Eagle Glen and The Pines at Lake Isabellateam up in 2013 to host the 59th State MatchPlay Championship.

This July central Michigan welcomes the2013 Michigan Publinx State Match PlayChampionship. Local favorites Eagle Glenand The Pines at Lake Isabella host the 59thannual event and golfers are geared up for agreat time.

Can’t play in Scotland? That’s why EagleGlen brought Scotland to Michigan. Withnatural wetlands and bunkers bordering finegrass fairways in the tradition of Scotland’sfinest courses this picturesque, rolling ter-rain may have been central Michigan’s bestkept secret, but it is sure to shine this year atthe tournament.

The Pines at Lake Isabella is the secondcourse in the tournament and you’ll find afun, yet challenging course surrounded bylarge growing pines. When you reach the15th tee take a moment to soak in the view. That’s what The Pines is all about.Reminding you to enjoy your day on thegreens and surrounding you with naturalbeauty. You will be able to overlook thebeautiful lake as well as stand atop the damseparating the lake from the flowingChippewa River.

The two featured courses are not the onlyplaces you will find amazing golf in centralMichigan. The area boasts more than adozen play worthy courses. If you’re inter-ested in coming up throughout the summercheck out www.micentralswing.com, a cus-

tom play and stay program out of MountPleasant where you can play courses rangingfrom the Premiere St. Ives, Tullymore,Bucks Run, and PohlCat to challenging four-star courses like Snow Snake, The Emerald, and Riverwood. They even offer fun localcourses like the newly owned Maple Creekor Pleasant Hills, a local favorite.

The program will set up your tee timesand find you the best hotel in the area so allyou have to do is show up and have a greattime. With so many courses and multiplelodging options you can truly create yourown custom golf package based on whereyou want to play and how much you want tospend.

So when you’re up for the state tourna-ment this July be sure to check out courseslike the well known Bucks Run. The coursescenery is relaxing, beautiful and windsaround Lake Fisher, the Chippewa River, and several natural wetlands. The greens arefast and healthy, and you can see that atten-tion has been paid to every detail makingthis Jerry Mathews layout worthy of its 4.5star rating.

Snow Snake, a striking golf course, tuckedaway in central Michigan with its challeng-ing terrain, elevation, undulating green, andtree lined fairways, Snow Snake is sure togive any golfer a challenge as you experi-ence the feeling of being up north, withoutthe extra two-hour drive. Snow Snake’s sig-nature hole would have to be number four. With a green guarded by a deep valley in thefront and lined with boulders along the back- topped with luscious flowers, you’ll seewhy number four is the most photographedand discussed post-round.

Riverwood Resort, a 4 star course, whichwill test any golfer’s ability and skill leveland bring out the best in your game. GolfDigest’s voted them one of the top places toplay and when you hit the number nine hole, one of the most popular holes, you’ll begiven a full sensory experience. As you

approach the 359 yardage, the scenic pondand water fountain come alive as you’re sur-rounded by the green bunkers. From the teethe Chippewa River is flowing softly behindyou, relaxing you as you prepare for a toughtee shot. This is what golfers look for inevery course they play, the challenge, thescenery, and that zen moment right beforethe swing.

All of this can be found right in the sweetcenter of Michigan, Mount Pleasant, whereyou will discover small town hospitalitywith big town amenities. When you’re intown be sure to check out the beautifuldowntown area with local boutique shops, locally owned restaurants, and the charmonly a downtown can supply. The fun andexcitement doesn’t stop there. The SoaringEagle Casino offers up more than 4,000 slotmachines, table games, and a bingo hall. While the entertainment hall and outdoorsummer concert series features some of thebest live entertainment around.

Teaching philosophy focuses onpositive communication and use

of drills to create an excitinglearning opportunity

We all know what an unbalanced golfswing, follow through looks like and feelslike. Here is something that I encourage allmy students to do during the off-season andleading into springtime.

Let’s face it......we all had good intentionsof working out, stretching, and strengthen-ing our golf specific muscles this off seasonbut time got away from us! What I like tohave students do is to make nice rhythmicgolf swings inside with a nice balanced fin-ish holding the pose seen in the picturesbelow for a three-second count. Notice the

golf shaft splits my head in half thru myears. Notice my hips and shoulders are fair-ly level with the ground and my weight hastransferred to my left foot/heel giving megreat support from my lower body underwhere the club has been swung. I suggeststarting with 25 swings three times per weekfor the first two weeks then slowly increasethat each week until you can reach a goal of200 swings three days per week. You will bepleasantly surprised at the result comespringtime. Your friends will wonder whatgolf school you have attended! Just tell themit was the Boyne Golf Academy and BrianO’Neill that helped you get golf ready!

Publinx State Match Play Returns North In 2013

The Michigan Publinx Golf Association will return to its northern home in 2013 tocontest its annual State Match Play Competition.

Farwell, MI has long been considered home for the SMP where Eagle Glen and ThePines Golf Club have served as the battlegrounds to determine some of the greatestchampions in the history of this fantastic event.

The tournament moved south for a few years to Bedford and Rochester, MI where thetournament was held at some great venues such as Bedford Valley Golf Club and TwinLakes Golf Club but the call from the northern atmosphere was to strong to resist in2013.

Dean Paesens and Joe Schumer (club managers) have done a fantastic job with thistournament through the years and look forward to welcoming back players from all overthe state to compete again in 2013.

Block off your calendar from July 26th to July 30th, get your game in shape and trav-el north to see if you can capture a SMP title in 2013.

Memorial Day weekend marks one of the

best weekends of the year for tournament

golf! This year was no exception as the

Publinx Michigan Medal Tournament con-

tinues to attract top players from all over the

state to win the Lee Gohs Trophy.

The field had over 90 players again this

year and the change in venue appears to

have played a big part in the attendance.

Greg Bores (PGA Pro) and his staff at

Pheasant Run did just a fabulous job and the

course is a good test for these great players.

The weather seems like it is always a fac-

tor but not this year as the conditions were

perfect, sun, cool and no wind!

In the Championship Division Dave

Vaclav went right to work and took full

advantage of the conditions. Dave fired the

only sub-par round of the day shooting 106

but Eric Dovre was right behind Dave shoot-

ing even par 108.

In the net division it was the Szymanski

“duo” Robert and Steven setting the pace

shooting “net” scores of 101 and 105,

respectively.

Dick Blank provided the shot of the day

with a “Hole-In-One” on hole 25, his play-

ing partners claimed it was a perfect shot!

In the final championship round of 27

holes, the scoring conditions continued with

Anthony Sorentino (2012 Publinx Player of

The Year) stepping up with the best round of

the tournament shooting 102, followed by

Erik Schleicher with 103. Dave Vaclav fired

104 to continue his fine play and distance

him self from the field, shooting a total

score of 210 for a seven shot victory over

Eric Dovre who shot 217.

In the final round of the “net” division,

the Szymanski “duo” just continued to roll.

This father and son team took first and sec-

ond place with plenty of cushion from the

third place finisher Fritz Reifert. In the end,

it was the son Robert who took home the

trophy shooting a sizzling net score of 207,

five shots better than his father Steven.

On behalf of the players, we would like to

thank the Publinx Tournament Committee,

the staff at Pheasant Run Golf Club and the

Officials who did a fantastic job!

WerkmeisterWins 7th West Michigan Amateur Title!

Quail Ridge Golf Club • Ada, Michigan • May 18th & 19th, 2013

For years the WMA made home Candlestone Golf Club inBelding, Mich. and in 2013 decided to move to a new venue “QuailRidge”.

Quail Ridge was started when Randy Erskine, a five-timeMichigan Open Champion and former PGA Tour player, partneredwith Michigan’s own renowned architect, Raymond Hearn and 15other investors to create a “great golf course with classic lines...thatwould be playable for players of all levels.”

Quail Ridge opened in 1998. This 18-hole championship course isknown for its stunning natural beauty and lush greenery. The mostobvious characteristics are the generous fairways and greens. Largetrees, gentle hills, water and bunkers come into play, but with fivesets of tees capable of playing to 6900 yards, this course made acompetitive challenge for these top amateurs in the West MichiganAmateur Tournament.

Tom Werkmeister was the defending champion and held sixWMA titles, three short of Bob Sakocius who currently holds ninetitles.

In the first round, Tom got off to a great start in defending his title, shooting a round of 70 but trailed Bob Sakocius and MichaelZoerhoff who both shot rounds of 69.

Bob and Michael both slipped a bit in the second round while Tomremained steady with a round of 73 but Andrew Yeager would be theleader going into the final round by shooting 69 and a total score of140 followed by Werkmeister at 143.

The final round was a two-man race between Tom and Andrew.Andrew fired a round of 71 but it wouldn’t be good enough asWerkmeister got on a roll and shot 67 to capture his seventh title byone shot.

Jim Hegarty captured the “Senior” title with a score of 147, twoshots better than Mark Ochsankehl who shot 149.
