Letter from the PresidentSusan Russell, Board President

What an amazing three months since your Midcoast Conservancy was created! We are already developing new community partnerships throughout our region, reaching out to funding sources, hosting dozens of recreational opportunities for kids and families, working with schools, and expanding our conservation, stewardship and water quality goals. It is remarkable to me how quickly the gifted staff and volunteers of our four “parents” (DLWA, HVNC, SVCA, and SWLA) have joined forces in order to broaden and strengthen our impact and success in all these areas. I hope you will stop in at the new offices at 36 Water Street in Wiscasset to say hi and to let us hear your views, dreams, and ideas. In addition to our fiduciary responsibilities, the Midcoast Conservancy board is deeply engaged in four important “start-up” initiatives: strategic planning, branding and marketing, new board member recruitment, and planning for significant land protection. When you see them, please thank these founding board members for their extra special diligence, energy, and vision: Vice President, Susan Shell (SWLA); Treasurer, Hugh Riddleberger (DLWA); Secretary, Jo Steneck (SVCA); Carole Cifrino (HVNC); Chuck Dinsmore (HVNC); Buck O’Herin (SWLA); and Marty Welt (DLWA). We all look forward to hearing from you as we embark on this important journey together “to support healthy lands, waters, wildlife and people in the Midcoast through conservation, education and recreation”.They join me in thanking you for your membership and support.

The stretch of the Sheepscot River from Kings Mills in Whitefield down-stream to the Head of Tide is a hidden gem known mostly to canoeists, people fishing or collecting fiddleheads, and those residents fortunate to own land along the way. Those with knowledge of this stretch know the magic of undeveloped river meandering through slow turns with deep water, paralleling the WWF railway bed past old bridge abutments, and the long stretch of rapids near the Alna-Whitefield town line to the Head of Tide.

This stretch, as well as other regions of the River, have benefited from SVCA’s past work on protecting Salmon spawning and rearing habitat over the years through easements and land donations, erosion control efforts, and the 25+ years of water quality testing. Midcoast Conservancy continues this long tradition, working to protect not only the quality of water but the forest and riparian habitats critical to long-term protection of the Sheepscot river.

While most of us see the larger picture of the river by car, foot or canoe, there is much more to the river we don’t see, beneath the surface. The denizens of the river come in all shapes and sizes, from anadromous fish to the lesser known ‘macro invertebrates’ that help shape the river ecosystem. Buffers and maintaining clear cold water are critical for the health of this underwater com-munity we don’t often consider.

Just above the Head Tide dam, a population of Brook Floaters can be found: a freshwater mussel listed as a Threatened Species in Maine. The Brook Floater lives in flowing water with sand and gravel substrates, and like all mussels is an important filter feeder within the river ecosystem. Most of us don’t think about the connections these animals have to health of the watersheds and the fish that live throughout the region. Their complicated life history involves producing a larval form called a glochidium that must be taken up by a fish —a somewhat random strategy for reproduction!

The mussel glochidia attach to fish gills and go through a parasitic phase, receiving nutrients from the host fish. Without a healthy fish popula-tion, mussels cannot reproduce. As filter feeders, the mussels filter water, remove sediments and move nutrients through the system for fish and other invertebrates. A long-lived creature, mussels may survive from six to 100 years depending on the species. Those mussels currently living above Head Tide dam may have been around when the dam was producing electricity!

The work of Midcoast Conservancy will continue to focus on long-term stewardship throughout the service area: working to maintain health of the rivers, streams and ponds; and paying attention to connections between land and water. River and human communi-ties are dependent on our awareness and stewardship to maintain important connections and cycles. Next time you have an opportunity to visit the river, give some thought to the bigger con-nections—from your own role to that of the lesser mussel!

Midcoast Conservancy Spring 2016

Member Tom Boothby has been involved with land trust work since Sheepscot Wellspring Land Alli-ance formed in the early 1990’s after a group of neighbors in Montville, including Tom, discovered cutting and disturbance of a nearby wetland. Says Tom, “It was a wake-up call in the neighborhood that this could happen right under our noses.” The group was driven to action, and formed a land trust in order to conserve what is now known as Bog Brook.

Tom stayed involved with Sheepscot Wellspring Land Alliance. Fifteen years ago, the group began to develop hiking trails at the Sheepscot headwaters.

When Tom was approached about having a marked hiking trail cross his land, he thought carefully about it— for two years. “I hesitated. My property is very near and dear to me; I don’t want somebody who’s not going to appreciate my property to be on it willy-nilly.” He watched how the current trails were being used, and saw that the people walking them treated the trails with respect. At that point, he agreed to have trails cross his land.

That trail has existed for ten years now. The Sheepscot Headwaters trails have grown to a 20-mile network in Freedom, Knox, Liberty, and Montville, with imminent connections to trails from Belfast to Unity and a new addition from Lake St. George State Park, where Tom is leading trail development.

Now it’s hard for Tom to imagine the trail not being at the edge of his back yard. Occasionally, he hears hikers on the trail talking, and finds it life-giving. “It’s something I would not want to be without. It’s delightful, affirming of land being appreciated, used, valued, and recreated on. Having the trail affirms the whole goodness of the land, of my property as well as all the interconnected properties—including both public conserved and privately owned properties —that are part of that trail.”

Tom knows he always has the option to say he no longer wants the trail to be on his property but can’t imagine that day coming. Lately, he’s been talking with his children about conserving his 30-acre property, and is ready to consider a conservation easement on the land, so that future generations can enjoy it as he and his children have.

Gearing Up for a Year of Outdoor RecreationAndy McEvoy

Spending active time outdoors is good for individuals and it’s good for families. More and more research is showing that spending a little bit of time being physical outside has significant health benefits for people of all ages. As winter disappears and spring fever sets in, let’s take stock of all the upcoming opportunities for outdoor fun and exercise that Midcoast Conservancy has lined up.

If you’re really eager to hit the trails, be sure to sign up for the 6-week Trail Run Training Series at Hidden Valley Nature Center (HVNC). Each Wednesday from

April 20 to May 25 runners of all levels can join others for a casual, non-competitive trail run. A short course and a longer course will be marked each week, and runners can start anytime between 4:30 and 6pm. It’s a great chance to meet other runners, explore the trails at HVNC, and stay committed to six weeks of outdoor exercise. Plus, you’ll get a good jump start on training for the annual Race Through the Woods trail race at HVNC in October.

If you have a younger kid at home, between ages 10 and 14, make sure to get them signed up for the Paddle Camp we’re hosting with the Maine Winter Sports Center on June 21–23.

Participants will learn the basics of canoeing and stand up paddle boarding on Damariscotta Lake. That way you can all spend the rest of summer on Little Dyer Pond at HVNC, Damariscotta Lake, or even on the Sheepscot River!

All of this is above and beyond the everyday opportunities available to all members: access to 60+ miles of trails and opportunities to paddle on Little Dyer Pond, Damariscotta Lake, and the Sheepscot River. Events like these are designed to give you the confidence and skills you need to explore the beautiful places around you.

Go ahead, get outside!

Building a Conservation EthicAndy McEvoy

In a way, these workshops are a miniature model for how we at Midcoast Conservancy aspire to tackle the many obstacles and challenges that face communities and conservation right now.

Each year we offer three Timber Frame Construction workshops at Hidden Valley Nature Center. Over the course of four days, eight students work together to do everything from mill timber to cut joints in order to raise the final frame on day four. It’s a fascinating process each time. The entire workshop happens with in a stone’s throw from where the trees were cut. As students walk through the forest learning about which trees were harvested and why, they confront tough choices that have profound effects on the forest and therefore on conserva-tion goals. Participants grapple with the conundrum that in order to build the structure of their dreams they will need to make a very real impact on the Earth.

Students then have to find ways to work together to build the structure. They come to the workshops with all kinds of backgrounds, some experi-enced with carpentry and many not so much. Over the course of four days students form relationships and work in teams to make the building design a reality. An enormous team effort happens on the last day when “many hands make light work” becomes a living fact as students work together to raise the frame.

In a way, these workshops are a min-iature model for how we at Midcoast Conservancy aspire to tackle the many obstacles and challenges that face com-munities and conservation right now. We plan to invite all kinds of people to the table to share stories and ideas and opinions; we plan to build effective teams that together are capable of the heavy lifting necessary to face today’s challenges; and finally together we will build great, durable communities that are steeped in tradition but which have a strong focus on the future.

If you’d like to find out more about the Timber Frame Construction work-shops coming up this year please visit www.hvnc.org/registration/ or head to Midcoast Conservancy’s event web-

page. The first class of the year will be April 28-May 1. Once again we’re thrilled to have MOFGA, Hancock Lumber and Woodmizer Sawmills as proud sponsors of the classes.

Midcoast Conservancy Dives into SummerGarrison Beck

At Midcoast Conservancy we have been busy planning a great summer season for our entire region. As the Watershed Protection Specialist, I have been especially focused on ensuring that the important work we do around Damariscotta Lake continues as strong as ever. Meanwhile, we have also been learning about the incredible resources we have in our region and thinking creatively about new ideas to protect and restore our shared waterways.

Rest easy knowing that Midcoast Conservancy is working hard to keep the waters you know and love in great condition, and with your help we can make this season better than ever.

Our Invasive Plant Patrol and Courtesy Boat Inspection programs on Damariscotta Lake continue with an even greater focus on prevention. These programs aim to identify and stop any invasive species from establishing in Damariscotta Lake while we work diligently to keep the already-present Hydrilla in check. We will be dedicating the work of this year’s Railsback Intern directly to these projects, ensuring nothing is overlooked.

As it is a recreation asset for the entire region, we keep a close eye on the water quality of Damariscotta Lake by taking regular water quality samples all season long from May to October. We measure for indicators such as oxygen and nutrients, which influence important conditions for cold water fisheries and algae growth, among other things.

Last summer, our inaugural year of running a Youth Conservation Corps, our crew installed 25 different landscape features to help control and prevent erosion on 15 properties around Damariscotta Lake. Home-owner Wilt Jones said of the Buffer Brigade, “They were very eager to solve the problem. They worked hard, and followed up on the project after-ward to make sure it was effective.” These projects are provided at minimal

cost to the landowner as an incentive to take an in-depth look at how prop-erties may be contributing to polluted runoff. This year’s crew, headed up by leader Brianna Smith, already has homeowners eager to get off the waiting list from last summer!

Additionally, we are expanding the program this year; Midcoast

Conservancy will be applying for a grant provided through the Clean Water Act that, if awarded, would go toward on-the-ground work to repair major sources of polluted runoff around Damariscotta Lake. Finally, Midcoast Conservancy will be continuing to monitor the health of the Sheepscot River throughout the summer season, thanks to a dedicated group of active volunteers. Working with other regional and national partners, we will be expanding this program to supplement the informa-tion collected by volunteers with data loggers which will collect temperature readings all year long, giving us the most seamless data on the Sheepscot River we have ever had. This will allow us to target our work in the future, with the goal of improving areas of impaired water quality and protecting healthy ecosystems for the benefit of the entire community.

These projects are provided at minimal cost to the landowner as an incentive to take an in-depth look at how properties may be contributing to polluted runoff.

Trout Brook Preserve Extends Hiking TrailsAnna Fiedler

Happy Voters, Happy FishAt the Whitefield Town Meeting on March 19th, citizens overwhelm-ingly approved a plan proposed by the Atlantic Salmon Federation and Midcoast Conservancy that would provide, at no cost to the town, the removal of the Coopers Mill dam, installation of three dry hydrants for fire suppression (two in Sheepscot River at Coopers Mills and one in the West Branch of Route 17), and construction of a small community park that would memorialize the historical impor-tance of the dam and the mills to the village of Coopers Mills. This is a huge conservation victory for the Sheepscot River, opening up 36 miles of river and tributary to migratory fish between Head Tide dam and Sheepscot Pond. Work to install the dry hydrants may begin this summer with comple-tion of the restoration work (dam removal); park construction will likely by completed in fall 2017 or 2018. Several previous proposals to remove the dam stalled. The approach taken this time ensured that we engaged a diversity of viewpoints on the town committee that helped develop the plan and ensured that water for fire suppres-sion and other community benefits were included in the final plan. This style of partnering is at the center of Midcoast Conservancy’s mission to protect interconnected watersheds, lands and trails, the heart and health of the integrated community ecosystem.

At the end of 2015 we acquired an additional 87 acres of land as an extension of the Trout Brook Preserve in Alna. This was the last of four parcels, acquired since 2005, that were part of the Peaslee Farm. Maxine and Steve Tornell helped to make these acquisitions possible to protect not only important salmon spawning and rearing habitat on the Brook and along the Sheepscot River, but also important corridors of upland forests that buffer the waterways.

Maxine grew up on the farm, though the original farmhouse is now gone. At the closing in December she not only signed papers to make the transfer complete, she shared wonderful stories about the history of her family and her childhood in Alna. She told about open pastures where cows and horses grazed, the bridge across Trout Brook, history of the WWF trains learned from her father, picking cranberries in the wet areas, her mother calling to her up the hill where she played and explored (now covered in forest), turtles in the river, and the ford on the Sheepscot at the end of Peaselee Lane. Her father’s family also owned land north of Rte. 194 off Hollywood Blvd. and she described the apple orchards and hay fields of those lands as well as the old road coming off the hill.

The stories that are passed when land is transferred are as important a resource in many ways as the land itself, providing connections to past communities and clues for future stewardship. We are grateful to Maxine and Steve for their patience and willingness to work with us on this wonderful addition to the Preserve, now totaling 165 acres. The Preserve is open to hiking with several trails already established and plenty of room for exploring and hunting off trail!

Happy Voters, Happy Fish

In December, Sheepscot Wellspring Land Alliance purchased a special 54-acre parcel next to Lake St. George State park in Liberty. The property includes ¾ mile of frontage on the Sheepscot River, with enchanting old growth hemlocks along the river’s edge and mature forest throughout. It lies across the river from an-other key property Midcoast Conservancy is working to conserve to create a new 1000-acre block of habitat along the Sheepscot River. Midcoast Conservancy is partnering with the State Park to extend hiking trails from the park to neighboring conserved lands.

The first Maine Summer Adventure Race will take place July 23, 2016, offering a full day (or half day) of exploration of the woods and lakes around Jefferson, Maine, in the Midcoast region.

The MSAR will involve teams of two, three or four competing in a nonstop race involving trail running or trekking, road and mountain biking, flat-water paddling and orienteering. Teams will have to combine athleticism with strategy and navigation to guide themselves to as many checkpoints as possible within the race’s time limit.

Both the eight-hour and three-hour versions of the Maine Summer Ad-venture Race will start at the Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson, ME. The race is designed by Cliff and Kate White of the Strong Machine Adventure Racing team and will be hosted by Midcoast Conservancy.

The race will challenge expert adventure racers and beginners alike with a fun and beautiful course that travels through thick pine forests, across deep cold lakes and rivers and up to prom

ontories that offer the occasional revealing glimpse of the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

“Maine is a beautiful state and this area of Maine is one of our favorites,” said race co-director Cliff White. “When we started exploring the area, our first thought was that it would be the perfect place for an adventure race because it has so much varied terrain. We can’t wait until the race, when we’ll be able to send racers out to explore all the cool places we’ve discovered.”

First-time adventure racers and families can discover how fun the sport of adventure racing is with the beginner-friendly three-hour race, said Kate White.

“If you can walk or jog a 5K, bike five miles and paddle one mile, you will be more than prepared for the three-hour race,” she said. “The eight-hour course is designed to be more of a challenge, with longer distances and more naviga-tional components. However, this race is still appropriate for the outdoorsy, beginner racer since the more difficult routes will be optional.”

Per-racer fees between $50 to $90, not including discounts offered to Midcoast Conservancy members. Race entry includes a race T-shirt, swag bag, post-race feast and drinks (including a featured microbrew), maps, canoe and paddle rental, prizes and giveaways and facility and land-use fees.

The race will be sanctioned by the United States Adventure Racing Association and will count as part of its points series.

“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air,” Ralph Waldo Emerson said.

All of us who live, spend summers, and recreate in Midcoast Maine un-derstand those words. We treasure our natural world, and we know that it requires our care and protection so that future generations will live in its sunlight, swim in its waters, and drink its wild air.

Thank you for being part of that effort through your generous support of Midcoast Conservancy. With your help, we are providing stewardship for land and water throughout the Midcoast, and access to those resources for all. We couldn’t do it without you!

As imperceptibly as GriefThe Summer lapsed away—Too imperceptible at lastTo seem like Perfidy—A Quietness distilledAs Twilight long begun,Or Nature spending with herselfSequestered Afternoon—

The Dusk drew earlier in—The Morning foreign shone—A courteous, yet harrowing Grace,As Guest, that would be gone—And thus, without a WingOr service of a KeelOur Summer made her light escapeInto the Beautiful.

Midcoast Conservancy is delighted to be hosting an exhibition of original artwork by artist, author, and editor Jonathan Alderfer. Jonathan has specialized in painting birds and natural history subjects for more than thirty years; for ten years he was National Geographic’s resident birding expert at their headquarters in Washington, D.C. While there, he authored, edited, or illustrated more than twenty books for the National Geographic Society, including the best-selling Field Guide to the Birds of North America (6th edition), Birding Essentials, Backyard Guide to the Birds of North America, Kids Bird Guide of North America and most recently the 2nd edition of Complete Birds of North America. Currently he is at work on the 7th edition of the field guide. In addition to being the co-author, he is painting new hummingbird illustrations for the guide, which is scheduled for publication in the fall of 2017.

Jonathan is an avid birder and excels at teaching other nature lovers, whatever their age and level of skill, how to draw and paint birds. During the summer of 2015 he taught a weeklong workshop—Arts and Birding—at National Audubon’s Hog Island Camp in Maine. His other interests include art history, fly-fishing, gardening, and foraging for wild foods. Jonathan recently moved to a house overlooking the Sheepscot River in Edgecomb, Maine.
