This spring, it was easier to get to the annual Graduate Orthodontic Resident Program. Residents packed themselves into a van and headed east on I-70 for a little “bonding” in St. Louis, Mo. Featured speakers of this year’s meeting were Dr. Arnet (surgeon) and UMKC alum Dr. Kavanaugh. The meeting was a great chance for the new residents to get to know their senior residents, and to make new friends with residents from other schools. In addition to lectures, the meeting also featured a picnic at the AAO, complete with a St. Louis BBQ and band. A party, graciously sponsored by Ormco, encouraged the mixing of residents from programs throughout the country.

Dr. Katherine Kula has announced that she has accepted the position of professor and chair of the Department of Orthodontics and Orofacial Genetics at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, effective January 1, 2008. During Dr. Kula’s time as UMKC Chair of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, she has served as alternate MSO delegate to the AAO House of Delegates and as a member of the AAO Task Force for Faculty Recruitment and Retention. Please join us in thanking Katherine for her contributions to UMKC and wishing her well in her future endeavors.

As of Jan. 1, 2007, Drs. Laura R. Iwasaki and Jeffrey C. Nickel joined the UMKC School of Dentistry, Division of Graduate Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics as the Leo A. Rogers Chair and Graduate Program Director, respectively. In addition to their teaching duties in the graduate program, Drs. Nickel and Iwasaki are engaged in funded research. Part of their work is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, and explores the inter-individual differences in jaw mechanics that may be relevant to the development of myofascial pain and

TMJ degenerative joint disease. This work brings together a research team of collaborators from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and the University of Nebraska. Drs. Nickel and Iwasaki also work with research teams in Zurich, Switzerland, and Osaka, Japan. Another part of their research is sponsored by an AAOF Center Award. This project is examining the factors related to the speed of tooth movement in humans,

including magnitudes of stress, stage of development, cytokines secreted in gingival crevicular fluid, and genetics.

UMKC Residents bid a fond farewell to Dr. Dennis Harper.

2 Retire from UMKCDr. Doug Thompson

recently retired from teaching. We

wish Dr. Doug all the best as he is embarks on

building his new orthodontic practice. The demands of opening a new practice were the reason that Dr. Doug decided to hang up his educator’s shoes. Thanks Doug for your time and dedication to the education of UMKC residents! Dr. Dennis Harper also retired from teaching at UMKC. After six years of teaching in the Orthodontic Graduate program, Dr. Dennis Harper is retiring from his Friday afternoon obligations. Dr. Harper has made

significant contributions to the training of orthodontic residents in the areas of orthognathic surgical/orthodontic therapies. Thankfully, Dennis has agreed to provide the orthodontic residents with yearly seminars, and thus the orthodontic program continues to benefit from his extensive knowledge.

Arizona and Tweed…Naturally! In May 2007, first-year orthodontic residents Drs. Michael Barlow, Patrick Briscoe, Tara Cash, and Larissa Freytag traveled to Arizona for the Tweed course. UMKC residents participate in this course after completing two semesters of course work and clinic obligations. The Tweed course offers the opportunity to further acquire and develop skills in the areas of diagnostics and therapeutics. The residents say that it took a couple of weeks to stop the pain in their fingers.

The Midwest Dental Conference and

Orthodontic Meeting will be held April 3-4, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri. Plan to attend the two-day continuing education program “3D Imaging for the Orthodontist” presented by Dr. C.H. Kau, BDS, MScD, MBA, PhD, FDS, FFD (Ortho), MOrth, FAMS. The topic for the 2008 Midwestern Dental Conference and Orthodontic Meeting will be 3D Imaging for Orthodontists, and will feature Dr. Chung How Kau as our distinguished guest speaker. Dr Kau is an associate professor of orthodontics and director of the 3D Facial Imaging Laboratory at the Dental Branch, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. His research lab is in possession of $250,000 worth of imaging equipment, which includes the 3D Sirona Galileos cone beam scanner and the 3dMD surface imaging device. Dr Kau serves on the national educational level and is on the Panel of Examiners for the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh,

Scotland, and an international examiner for the College in Cairo, Egypt. He is on the editorial review board for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics and ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Orthodontics, Angle Orthodontist and Evidence Based Dentistry Journal. There has been an escalating interest in 3D imaging devices over the last decade. Increasingly, orthodontists are beginning to appreciate the advantages that the third dimension gives to clinical diagnosis, treatment planning and patient education. This series of seminars focuses on the cutting-edge technology of cone beam CT/surface imaging and discusses the range of issues associated with this technology. Dr. Kau’s two-day course will include: 1. An overview of imaging devices for the head and neck region 2. Cone Beam Technology for dental applications: • Principles of CBCT versus Conventional CTs • CBCT Acquisition Systems • Clinical Applications

• Radiation and Regulation issues • Small Prints 3. Surface Imaging devices 4. Oral research in 3-dimensional imaging 5. Hands on session (Friday, April 4, 2008): During this session conducted by Dr. Kau, participants will be able to manipulate computer images.

2008 Midwest Dental Conference

As is the case in the rest of the country, UMKC residents and graduates are interested in the use of microscrews as anchorage devices. Under Dr. Katherine Kula’s direction, Dr. Hyo-Sang Park (right) presented on this topic at a well-attended continuing education course at the School of Dentistry in February. Also, in association with the 29th Annual UMKC Orthodontic Alumni Meeting held in March in Kansas City, our first- and second-year residents along with 150+ orthodontists enjoyed two days of clinical examples demonstrating the use of microscrew temporary anchorage devices. The diversity of opinions expressed by Drs. Tyler Jolley and Jack Fisher during these presentations made clear to the attendees in the crowded hall of the Hyatt Regency Crown Center Hotel that there remains a great deal of controversy in this field.

Vance J. Dykhouse (DDS ’66, MS ’70) is now officially the immediate past-president of The

American Board of Orthodontics, having

completed his work as president at the 2007 Annual Session of the AAO in Seattle, Wash. Thankfully, Dr. Dykhouse continues to provide UMKC residents with his clinical wisdom during his bi-weekly Monday seminars and clinical supervision. Please congratulate Vance for his superlative work for the board, and his ongoing support for the UMKC Orthodontic Program.

Each year, UMKC Graduate Orthodontics organizes the Eric J. Schweitzer (ORT ’92) Memorial Symposium. The purpose of the symposium is to have recent orthodontic graduates return to Kansas City to make presentations to current orthodontic residents. This spring’s two guest speakers were William McReynolds (ORT ’04) and Scott Francois (DDS ’99, ORT ’01). The benefactors of the Schweitzer Memorial Symposium have contributed to this endeavor so that orthodontic practitioners can speak frankly of the joys and difficulties they encountered while embarking on their careers.

Graduation 2007: Residents Have a Party before Starting on the Next Stage of Careers

We had a great turn-out of faculty for the annual comprehensive examination of our senior residents on August 6, 2007. Thanks to all the part-time instructors who gave the day to help jury the presentations given by the graduating class!

It was a fabulous night for a graduation celebration at the Indian Hills GCC. The banquet hall was filled with happy families and friends to pay tribute to the success of Drs. Shellianne Kawamoto, Adam Saylor, Erin Jamesen, and Nellie Kim-Weroha. Dr. Kawamoto is returning to practice in her home state of Hawaii. Dr. Saylor is heading to Chicago, while Dr. Jamesen is taking her husband back to her home state of Texas. Dr. Kim is moving to Rochester, Minn., and will be associating there while her husband completes an internal medicine residency at Mayo Clinic. We shall miss our graduating class. They performed admirably in achieving their didactic and clinical goals, and we hope to see you soon at a meeting … hopefully for the April Midwestern Meeting.
