His e-bike was only slightly damaged in the collision, but the young man, surnamed Qin, hit the ground head first and died of brain damage. So far this year, Bao’an Dis- trict has reported six fatal acci- dents caused by e-bike drivers who were driving under the influence of alcohol. If you drink, don’t drive. In the one-day conference, over 280 distinguished guests from home and abroad discussed the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative in the fields of international economic and trade cooperation, the develop- ment and cooperation of cities, international finance and inno- vation in technology. Chen Biao, a senior Party offi- cial with the city government, said in his welcoming speech that Shenzhen will make full use of its advantages in terms of geographical location, industry, capital and opening up in the Belt and Road Initiative, leading enterprises to go global, deepen- ing the capacity for cooperation and optimizing the industrial structure so as to achieve mutual benefits and win-win results. Sun Zhenyu, president of the China Society for World Trade Organization Studies, said: “We have accumulated rich experience in the construction of the special economic zone. We should pro- mote the Shenzhen model.” According to statistics, Shenzhen enterprises invested US$1.518 billion in countries along the Belt and Road route in 2016, an increase of 10 percent year on year, accounting for 14.1 percent of the city’s total for- eign investment. With regard to foreign contracted projects, countries along the Belt and Road route make up an impor- tant engineering contract market for Shenzhen enterprises, with a completion total accounting for nearly 50 percent of the city’s contracted projects. THE prevalence of diabetes in women over 20 years old is now at 5.7 percent in Shenzhen, as the number of female diabetic patients is growing year by year, according to DT News. Currently, there are over 120,000 diabetic patients in Shenzhen. A report released by the Inter- national Diabetes Federation (IDF) notes that there are over 200 million female diabetics glob- ally, and the number is expected to reach 300 million by 2040. Luohu District was chosen as a pilot district to carry out the project. The community clinics in the district will hand out bro- chures, host public lectures and use social media to help diabet- ics gain a better understanding of the disease. Construction of the campus will start in 2018 in two phases, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported. The Sun Yat-sen University was established in Guangzhou in 1924. The university inked deals with the Shenzhen city government to set up a Shenzhen campus in 2015. The campus will be located in Guangming New Area and cover an area of 314.3 hectares. The Shenzhen campus plans to enroll over 20,000 students in the future. The first phase of construction will start in 2018 and is expected to be finished by 2021, with plans to build infrastructure for medi- cine, engineering, science and arts faculties. According to the bureau, the design of the Shenzhen campus was inspired by a traditional Chi- nese tale about how the phoenix, a lucky animal in China, breeds its nine children in a stable and prosperous environment. Located near Zhupo Hill in Guangming, the campus will be designed and built in a shape that resembles a phoenix with long and furry wings. Overlooking the blueprint of the campus, one will find it looks like a phoenix with an interna- tional academic exchange center, library, teaching buildings and a student service center as the phoenix’s body and the canteens along with the faculty buildings as the phoenix’s wings. The landmark architecture of the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou will also be recreated on the Shenzhen campus, includ- ing the statute of Sun Yat-sen and the traditional archways. The blueprint also features some recreational spaces, includ- ing a sports room, coffee shop and book store. (Zhang Qian) AUTUMN and winter are the best seasons for bird watching as large numbers of migratory birds fly across the sky. This year, the birds have returned early to Shenzhen Bay, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yesterday. Billions of migratory birds fly long distances across the globe every year. There are nine important migration routes, four of which pass through China. Shenzhen is located in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Figures from the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society also show that there are a total of 3,951 black-faced spoonbills in the world, and 375 of them will spend the winter at Shenzhen Bay this year, accounting for nearly one-10th of the total. Shenzhen Mangrove Wetlands Conservation Foundation (MCF) has cooperated with Guangdong Neilingding-Futian National Nature Reserve to create suitable habitats for the migratory birds. The renovation includes com- bining several small fish ponds into a bigger one to help birds take off and avoid predators, dredg- ing the waterway to facilitate the exchange of water and nutrients at tides and increasing the area of shallows and the length of the waterline for birds to inhabit. Following the reconstruction of fish ponds of No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, the water area of the entire wetland has increased by 15 per- cent, creating a 9-hectare habitat for water birds and 1.5 hectares of freshwater. The number and species of birds, such as Charadri- idae, have increased remarkably compared with the same period last year, with a maximum of more than 6,200 and account- ing for about 10 percent of the total number of migratory birds at Shenzhen Bay. A total of 38 black-faced spoonbills have also been recorded in this habitat. MCF has carried out bird- watching activities at Shenzhen Bay, Futian National Mangrove Nature Reserve and Futian Mangrove Ecological Park. Resi- dents interested in bird watch- ing can sign up through MCF’s WeChat account to obtain rel- evant infor- mation.
