Fall 2016 Tennessee Dental Hygienist Association Presidents Message MIKE TULLOS, RDH, BS 2016-2017 TDHA PRESIDENT This year Tennessee joins a handful of states, less than 10 to be exact, that can practice teledentistry. Here in our state, through our collective volunteer efforts, we are not only making positive change happen but incorporating emerging technologies into the delivery of oral health care services. Now that is something to be proud of! We are no longer just a progressive state in the South but, now one in the nation! The previous leaders of the Tennessee Dental Hygienists’ Association have helped pave the way for us to make changes to our scope of practice today. To everyone that has helped move us forward, I would like to say Thank You! We have looked past our operatories to see how we can improve access to care. Where do you see our profession going in the future? Self Regulation? Owning our own practice? SRP in a general setting? We are here to help make your voice heard. We are stronger in larger numbers and that is why it is very important to be a member of our professional association ADHA. TNDHA is the only organization in our state that has the interest of dental hygienist at heart. With this being said, do not be stagnant; in turn be Openly Willing to Learn(OWL). I was told by a wise professor in dental hygiene school that being a dental professional requires a lifelong pursuit of learning. I have practiced by this model since then and plan to never stop learning! So I challenge you to be an OWL. President’s Message MIKE TULLOS, RDH, BS

2016-2017 TDHA PRESIDENT

This year Tennessee joins a handful of states, less than 10 to be exact, that can practice teledentistry.

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” ― Walt Disney

Annual Session 2016 was a fun filled weekend of continuing education, networking, association business and

shopping. Downtown Chattanooga offered a beautiful landscape for visiting the aquarium, restaurants, and

walking around with friends. Attendees heard trending topics such as determining patients' health by looking at their tongue, as well as caring for our elders in facilites. Student table clinics featured many interesting presentations from dental hygiene students across the state.

We were thrilled by a riveting mystery dinner theater and had a blast following the clues to find the murderer put on to raise money for the HYPAC. Finally, exhibitors from top oral health companies offered insight into

new products and provided the always desired goodies we love so much.

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported TDHA.

We look forward to seeing you in 2017!

ADHA SENIOR DELEGATE REPORT

Bambi SnappUpon arrival to Pittsburg, we received our t-shirts and registration materials for the Inaugural IOH 5K run/walk. Thank you for your sponsorship!! We helped at the “Water Station at the TURN” and a great time was had by all. It was a tremendous success and raised a lot of money for IOH!! Afterwards we attended the AFTER GLO Party on the Rooftop of the David Lawrence Convention Center. Tennessee reached its goal of $1350!! While at CLL, I volunteered for 2 CE courses (with Cindy) and I also attended the Liaison Luncheon for IOH.

After CLL, I attended all the Association business meetings: Association Update, All District Discussions, 1st, 2nd and 3rd House of Delegates, Reference Committees A, B and C where we gave testimony on various PR’s and PBY’s, Candidates Forum (although all candidates were running unopposed), Governance by Design, Leadership Mentoring Session and ADHA Advocacy with the Governmental Affairs Division. Tennessee Delegate Cindy Godfrey served on Reference Committee B and did a GREAT JOB!!! Membership is down in Tennessee and overall in District VI.

**There was very little mention of California’s decision to withdraw from ADHA**

There was discussion of implementing a $4.50 Administrative fee from each ADHA member. This would not be a dues increase rather a deduction from what ADHA collects and distributes to the state!! Trustee Diana Saylor stated the state would need to get “creative” in ways to make up this revenue loss. After much “grumbling” through the delegates in district discussions, the BOT took this back to reconsider.

BULLET POINTS FROM 93RD ADHA ANNUAL SESSION:• ADHA has formed a NEW PROFESSIONALS ADVISORY GROUP. These are appointed by the president from recommendations received.

They will help transition students and states can link up using the Members Only section of the ADH website.• ADHA members only web access doing well• ADHA is going GREEN…membership cards are only accessible online only for printing• Illinois has Direct Access…ADHA staff traveled to Springfield twice to help with lobbying efforts• FTC leadership had article in New York Times discussing the need for Dental Therapists• OHIO passed legislation for the Dental Therapist• Vermont passed legislation for the Dental Therapist

**INTERESTING FACT** Only ONE dental hygiene school in Vermont• Michigan has introduced legislation for a Mid-level Provider and ADHA will be working closely with them• Coalitions are very important networking tools and were used in Utah, Vermont, Illinois and Ohio…Jose at ADHA has a list of Coalitions to

use as needed• Lots of talk about DOS (?) having to do with Non-Owner DDS Dental practices (can’t do in TN)• Interested in ADHA office?? Bio-Data forms must be submitted by Feb. 1, 2017• Unleashing Your Potential deadline is August 1, 2016 to be held in November in Chicago• UYP is a “pool of potential national leaders”….but all candidates were unopposed this year????• Wrigley is giving $120,000 in Community Grants and there may be a second UYP• BIG PUSH TOO REFER TO YOURSELF AS A PROFESSIONAL MEMBER (??)• Trend will be going from Councils to Ad Hoc work groups …these are appointed by the President• Governance of the FUTURE draft models were discussed and out of 3 models, the position of Treasurer seems to be eliminated. I have the

HOD Mega Issue Backgrounder for anyone to look at. Just let me know!!• After attending the Governance of the Future…..ALOT of talk is that states and possibly ADHA will be looking toward going to a General

Assembly…..some spoke to the more “transparency” issue and others thought it would be a more equal representation with this format…..think on that….

Hello TN Hygienists and New Professionals!!I am Diana Saylor, your representative on the national level of your association, American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA). I am

actually the Trustee for 5 states (AL, AK, LA, MS, and TN). ADHA has been busy this year with some exciting programs and restructuring. • ADHA Center for Life Long Learning and Annual Meeting in June in the Great City of Pittsburg, PA and planning for the ADHA’s CLL

and Annual Session in Jacksonville, FL June 14-20, 2017.• Newly Revised Standards for Clinical Dental Hygiene Practice• ADHA task force groups and Adhoc committees are being formed as needed to allow members to be active and use their talents with

their busy schedules in mind. This allows more members to be apart of their association, use their talents, and time commitments can be short depending on the task.

• Publishing a white paper on Transforming Dental Hygiene Education and the Profession for the 21st Century• National Dental Health Month• Cutting edge Continuing Education with CDE World (https://cdeworld.com) and ADHA website (http://www.adha.org/ce-courses)• New Professionals Advisory Group• Advocating for your Profession in Washington, DC• Updating our Infrastructure on the website• Exploring New Governance for ADHA with the help of officers, ADHA delegates and alternate delegates, new professionals, students and members like yourse

These are just a few of the benefits that ADHA offers its members!!!To learn more and to stay in the loop here are some great options!!

Have a wonderful Summer and FallDiana G. Saylor, RDHADHA District VI Trustee

In June of 2014 the ADHA House of Delegates voted to keep the tripartite structure (ADHA, Constitute and Component) for the ADHA. Therefore, in March 2015 the ADHA Board of Trustees voted to revitalize the structure and adopt 3 documents:

• Constitute Charter Agreement• Incorporated Component Charter agreement• Unincorporated Component Charter

These agreements establish a legal structure designed to protect the organization and its volunteer leaders from personal liability. It creates best practices for the tripartite structure therefore all levels can operate in accordance with applicable legal and tax requirements, protects ADHA name and brand, and protects against misappropriation and misuse of member dues.

The Constitute Charter Agreement is going to be coming out this fall and the TN BOT will have ample time to review and return it to ADHA. The TN BOT will have several documents that will accompany the Charter Agreement like a recorded WebEx Informational Series and a Toolkit that will help the BOT in their decision. Then the implementation of the various requirements for our state will span over 2 years.

If you have any questions/comments please email or call ADHA member services.
