!Protect Your Teeth Through Healthy Diet Choices A healthy mouth does more for you than you might imagine. Your mouth lets you speak clearly, express your emotions, and eat a good diet by chewing and tasting the foods you enjoy. But tooth decay or gum disease can take a bite out of your oral health. A quarter of America’s 2- to 5-year-olds and half the 12- to 15-year-olds have tooth decay. As many as one in eight U.S. adults has advanced gum disease. Even more troubling, new research paints a grim picture of the oral health status of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. One-third have untreated cavities, 80 percent have gum disease and 10 percent are missing some teeth! A growing body of research suggests that oral health affects overall health, and dental issues go far beyond a person's smile. Brush up on how the food and drink you put into your mouth can protect it—so that you and your family can keep smiling. !Say No to Sodas and Sweets The effects of sugary beverages and foods on your teeth aren’t so sweet. Carbonated soft drinks can erode tooth enamel, leading to decay. Sugary snacks such as cake, cookies, and candies harm tooth enamel. Taffy, gummy bears, and chewy snacks like raisins and other dried fruits are also a common cause of decay. They can easily get stuck between teeth and aren’t likely to be cleared away by saliva. !

Try These Better Options The following beverages and foods support dental health:

Fresh green tea. This antioxidant-rich drink can reduce cavity risk because it offers polyphenols that help keep plaque from sticking to your teeth. To keep it healthy, brew it fresh from bags and don’t add much sugar. ! !!!

Milk and plain yogurt. They’re calcium-rich and low-acid choices. Foods that provide calcium and vitamin D are vital for strong bones and teeth. Healthy protein foods and healthy fats may have a protective effect on tooth enamel especially Soy milk and Almond milk. !! !!Fruits and vegetables. Fruits high in vitamin C, including oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, and kiwi, help keep gum tissue healthy and strong. Celery and carrots clean and stimulate your gums. Sweet potatoes and broccoli help form and maintain tooth enamel. Onions contain sulfur compounds that can kill bacteria in the mouth, helping to combat decay. !!!!

Other Nutrition Principles • Choose whole grain breakfast cereals with low sugar content. !• Eat fresh fruit in place of fruit juices most of the time. !• Drink only water between meals. !• Drink fluoridated water – if you prefer bottled water, buy the kind with fluoride added at a concentration of 0.7 to 1.2 mg/L (parts/million). !• Avoid soft drinks (carbonated beverages) during pregnancy and at least the first 30 months of life. !• Limit snacking between meals, especially soft drinks and snack foods. !!!More Steps To Take !!You don’t have to floss all your teeth; only the ones you want to keep! Tooth decay is largely preventable. Practicing good oral hygiene is important. Each day, brush twice and floss at least once. Have your teeth cleaned every six months and visit your dentist regularly for a checkup. Talk with your dentist about further ideas on how to keep your smile healthy.
