While there was a lot to celebrate with our school outperforming the national sta- tistics, we still have students who we are working hard to support to meet the National reading and Writing stand- ards. We have been interested to see stud- ies which show that increasing the amount a child reads by just a few minutes each day has a massive im- pact on a child’s reading development. Learning is the primary business of school, but children are learning all the time, and the impact that parents and family have by placing value and em- phasis on reading and writing is as big as any impact that a teacher can have. For this reason, it is crucial that fami- lies help their children to develop and maintain sound habits around using their book bags to regularly get read- ers home, time for reading with some- one else (the cat can’t tell them the words they get stuck on), and showing our teachers that this is being done by making use of the reading diaries that are in your child’s book bag. The benefits of this kind of support from home is obvious in the children we teach and we cannot help but ob- serve the gains being made by the stu- dents who are receiving daily support from home. It’s a challenge to us all in a busy day and age, but we want to think that we can manage this support creatively, perhaps by taking time at drop off time to read with your child in the library, or do a deal with another parent to read with their child immediately before or after school, and they read to yours. The library is available, and it would make good use of that messy time at 8:50 and 3:00. Kind regards John Elliott Principal

MIMI SCHOOL “WHERE THE COUNTRY, COAST, AND CLASSROOM MEET”

August 7, 2014

Dear Parents and Caregivers, At their last meeting, the Board of Trustees looked at the literacy results of our children at Mimi School. While there was a lot to celebrate with our school outperforming the national sta-tistics, we still have students who we are working hard to support to meet the National reading and Writing stand-ards. We have been interested to see stud-ies which show that increasing the amount a child reads by just a few minutes each day has a massive im-pact on a child’s reading development. Learning is the primary business of school, but children are learning all the time, and the impact that parents and family have by placing value and em-phasis on reading and writing is as big as any impact that a teacher can have. For this reason, it is crucial that fami-lies help their children to develop and maintain sound habits around using their book bags to regularly get read-ers home, time for reading with some-one else (the cat can’t tell them the

words they get stuck on), and showing our teachers that this is being done by making use of the reading diaries that are in your child’s book bag. The benefits of this kind of support from home is obvious in the children we teach and we cannot help but ob-serve the gains being made by the stu-dents who are receiving daily support from home.

Kind regards John Elliott

Pet Day 2014

Believe it or not, it is that time of the year again. We are looking at Saturday, 18th October for our Mimi School Pet Day. Please remember that the birth-date for animals is 1st August for lambs and calves, and 1st July for goats. John will ask all of the children what they are planning to have at Pet Day and organise the booklets for them, so if you could have a discussion with your children so that they have an idea about what they are doing, it would be much appreciated.

Mums vs Dads Bake Off

We need five mums and five dads to step up to compete for the Mums vs Dads bake off. For new and up and coming parents, this is where the mums and dads bake a cake each for auc-tion at Pet Day. The team that raises the most money at auc-tion for their cakes wins the title. The mums are cur-rent holders of the title after wrestling the trophy from the dads last year.

Sponsorship

The Home and School are ap-proaching a variety of places for prizes for our kids at Pet Day. If you have contacts with any busi-ness or organisation that will con-sider this, please get in touch with Melinda McClutchie or Kelly Stew-art-Cranson.

Tainui Sevens

Senior students from Mokau have organised a sevens rugby day for all Tainui kids next Friday. We hope to take three teams of Year 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6 to Ahititi School next Friday for the after-noon for fun. If your child indicates that they would like to play, a form will come home tomorrow for per-mission, and help with transport. Please complete and return the form on Monday so we can con-firm our involvement on the day.
