Congratulations. The fact that you are here, reading this guide, means that you recognize that our children today are having to navigate tremendous challenges in the educational system, their communities and at home. It means that your experience tells you that these children need a set of 21st Century tools to help them develop as a whole child and to succeed in the world. And it means that you personally care enough about the students in your school or district to be investigating social/emotional learning and positive education programs.

In a 2015 report from the World Economic Forum, New Vision for Education: Fostering Social and Emotional Learning through Technology, the report highlighted the fact that SEL

skills will be critical to the future of a productive workforce by developing the collaborative, creative and problem solving skills our children with need to compete in an increasingly ambiguous, paradoxical and dynamically changing global economy.

In the report, the WEF highlighted that a child’s education should first and foremost create the building blocks for lifelong learning — instilling the characteristics of curiosity, grit, personal initiative, leadership, adaptability, and a social and cultural awareness that enables partnership and collaborative teams. To quote from the report, “A meta-analysis of 213 studies showed SEL potentially leads to long-term benefits such as higher rates of

employment and higher levels of educational attainment.”

Additionally, the report went on to add that in a five country survey of more than 2,000 educators and parents that there was broad agreement on the need to include SEL in schools. In fact, in the US, 81% of parents and 78% of teachers emphasize the importance of teaching SEL skills in schools.

We couldn’t agree more and are proud that our MindUP™ program is an evidence-based, CASEL approved SEL solution provider to schools. By offering a wide array of access and implementation strategies for schools and districts we can help you provide a measurable and sustainable approach to whole child development in your school or district.

I hope this guide answers all of your questions, in case it didn’t, please feel free to contact me. Best regards,

.

Principals that want to bring MindUP™ to their schools have a variety of choices on how to implement the program — each approach representing a different degree of investment, commitment and participation to achieve implmentation fidelity.

DIY - For those schools that have established a tradition of SEL programs and who are looking to enhance their existing programs, you may purchase the K-8 curriculum guides directly from Scholastic or Amazon, or effective 10/1/16, you may subscribe to our K-12 curriculum guides through our Digital

Portal. With materials in hand, you can work together with your faculty and staff to determine the best implementation plan for your school.

Introductory Training - For those schools who are new to SEL or who need to reboot from another program, we offer a 6 hour MIndUP™ Introductory Training for teachers, administrators and staff utilizing a designated PD day.

This introductory training provides an overview of the program, a review of the published research and journal articles; a summary of the objectives and activities for the

15 lessons; a guided tour of of the digital portal, including additional links, webinars, resources and community content available; hands-on, interactive breakout sessions and role playing; and guidance on integration with current lesson planning.

Our MindUP™ Introductory Training also includes a 60-minute session for School Administrators and a two-hour evening workshop for Parents.

EVERY SCHOOL DISTRICT NEEDS A UNIQUE APPROACH — THERE ISN’T A “ONE SIZE FITS ALL MODEL.”

With An Implementation That Fits

The MindUP™ program shifts perspective — cultivating positive behaviour, improved learning and scholastic performance as well as improving student’s relationships with themselves and others. These are the qualities our children need in order to build success for a lifetime.

MindUP™ provides Principals and Superintendents with an approach that integrates four disciplines. The MindUP™ program is grounded in Neuroscience, activated by Mindful Awareness, inspired by Positive Psychology and a catalyst for Social and Emotional Learning.

At its heart, MindUP™ consists of a framework for teaching that provides 15 lessons — tailored appropriately to student’s age group and development level. Each lesson gives students the knowledge, skills and practices

that help them increase their self-control, focus, empathy and overall resilience.

The program is brought to life by teachers in a classroom following an immersive training session with teachers and administrators. Our objective is to help Principals and Superintendents fully integrate the MindUP™ lessons into the fabric of a safe and optimistic school culture.

MindUP™ is evidence-based, being one of the most researched SEL programs available to schools today. Our curriculum is published and distributed by Scholastic and also available via an on-portal, surrounded by support tools and a community of fellow teachers.

MindUP™ is CASEL accredited and provides specific skills and practices to develop all five CASEL objectives, from Self-Awareness to Responsible

Decision Making.The MindUP™ training

provides teachers with new skills and strategies that result in a more focused classroom. With fewer classroom disruptions, teachers have more time to teach while also equipping their students with a growth mindset.

MindUP™ schools have documented lower levels of absenteeism, suspensions, class disruptions as well as bullying and violence, with increases in positive behaviour, like self-regulations, optimism, compassion and empathy.

MindUP™ Certified Schools - In this MindUP™ implementation The Hawn Foundation offers everything provided in the Introductory training with a full school year of continued support, coaching and mentorship

This includes a monthly check in with your school coordinators, plus two to four phone conferences with your teachers or administrators to provide the opportunity to check in, ask additional questions or request additional support for your school.

In this implementation, The Hawn Foundation offers a “Booster” training at the 6-7 month mark to drill deeper into the curriculum, principles and practices and to offer and make adjustments for your School’s implementation. This is also a time for The Hawn Foundation to share new research findings with you, your faculty and staff, as well as the recap of your individual School’s assessment data.

MindUP™ Certified Schools are eligible to receive continued portal access and support for subsequent years at a 10% reduced rate for a flat licensing fee.

“The program teaches my staff and students awareness of their emotions and behavior, that they can be controlled, and gives them the knowledge and tools to be calm, serene, and make the best choices for the moment they are living in. This is huge in a school where there is racial conflict, especially living in the time that we are living in.”

WHAT PRINCIPALS ARE SAYING...

Our approach to District implementationsWe have yet to meet two school districts that

have the same goals, objectives and desires for district implementation of their SEL programs, so we approach each with a consultative approach.

Some districts simply want to offer MindUP™ on a menu of available SEL programs to their school principals - leaving implementation up to each school. Some districts want to implement at a specific grade level, adding subsequent grades each year. Some districts want to implement in key leader or beacon schools, or in schools that share socioeconomic conditions. And finally, some districts have reserved our program for key “turnaround” schools that are receiving extra attention and investment.

No matter the choice, we meet with your key stakeholders to understand the goals for the implementation and then with those who will be responsible for helping us steward the implementation.

For any implementation, THF provides early “socialization” meetings prior to training with your faculties, staff and parent to present the scope of the program and to answer any questions. We then help you identify designated MindUP™ coordinators who will be providing support for teachers throughout the district and leading any learning groups that you intend to establish.

THF will also provide extra training and support for your MindUP™ Coordinators so that the district can keep up with average teacher turnover and any dissemination of updated training materials as needed.

In those districts where there are dedicated personnel responsible for SEL content and implementation — we provide a “train the trainer” model to reduce costs to the districts and to provide a sustainable model for success.
