“Rafiki Power brings modern life to our village”

Example: business model for washing machine in a Rafiki Power village

Zakaria Kayo is 31 years old, lives in Soitsambu and is enthusiastic about running his own businesses
He won the business competition Rafiki Power conducted for recruiting Kiosk Operators
He bought two freezers and a TV from Rafiki Power and started a cinema and cold drinks business in the Kiosk
Given his success and enthusiasm, Rafiki Power offered him a loan in terms of productive equipment. He chose a washing machine and a printer to start a laundry and a stationery business
He started the laundry business, running the only such service in the village
Among the challenges he faces is water shortage in the village. He gets his water in tanks, from a source that is about 3km away
He is also forced to use the normal hand wash detergent since the washing machine detergents are not available in the village
The business case: Sells usage per load (1 blanket = 1 wash = ~15minutes) Revenue: 4,000 TSH Costs Electricity: 0.18KWh x 4TSH = 716 TSH Costs Water (50 litres): 500 TSH Costs Detergent/wash: 500 TSH Profit: 2284 TSH (~1USD)
