Program Title: Innovations in Wood Design: Trends for a Sustainable Future

• Aspen Art Museum: Design and Construction of the Wood Roof Structure • Gregory R. Kingsley, PhD, PE, KL&A, Inc. Structural Engineers and Builders

Greg is the president and CEO of KL&A Inc., Structural Engineers and Builders in Golden, Colorado, a firm of 65 that includes structural engineers, steel detailers, and construction managers. He enjoys working with design architects on innovative structures, especially in masonry and wood.

• The Aspen Art Museum, designed by architect Shigeru Ban, includes a long-span three-dimensional wood space-frame roof. Ban’s charge was to create a wood space frame with spans of more than 50 feet and cantilevers of 14 feet, in a structural depth of 3 feet. The space frame was to have two planes of intersecting diagonal webs of curved members that undulated up and down to touch the planes of the top and bottom chords with no visible connectors. This case study presentation will describe the design and construction of the wood structure, including paths explored but not chosen for the final design. Dovetail Partners January 2017

Program Title: Innovations in Wood Design: Trends for a Sustainable Future Introducing CLT: New Opportunities for Timber Construction Archie Landreman WoodWorks – Wood Products Council

• Cross laminated timber (CLT) is an engineered wood building system

designed to complement light- and heavy-timber framing options. Because of its high strength and dimensional stability, it can be used as an alternative to concrete, masonry and steel in many building types. This presentation will introduce CLT with a series of project examples that demonstrate its use and associated benefits in a range of applications. Information on manufacturing, specification and code-related considerations will also be discussed.

Task 6. Updates

• As a Park & Rec Board member I’ve been appointment to the Committee on Urban Design & Environment (CUDE) which reviews building plans in Rochester before they go to the Planning & Zoning Commission.

• In December, Rochester budgeted for a 20% time Sustainability Coordinator (the position is 80% DMC). I don’t think they’ve been hired yet though.

• Other Extension staff and I met with Patrick Seeb, of the DMC on 1/4/17. I brought up wood utilization and innovation.

• I posted a reply on my City Council Reps Facebook post about using TIF tax financing for wood innovation work in Rochester on 1/27/17.

Task 9 – New Use for Sawmill Residue and for Softwood Pulp Wood Bolts

• The NRRI organized a Minnesota visit by technology provider PolymerTrend LLC during the week of February 20th.

• The company has developed composite panel board concept plants that can be scaled down to 60,000 cubic meters per year.

• In addition the company has an innovative log pretreatment method that may have the potential to help lower energy cost in pulp wood production.

• The NRRI and PolymerTrend will work to develop an agreement to further commercialize these and other associated process technologies.

• Following the creation of an agreement the NRRI will reconvene the consortium of regional composite boards users that meet in November to develop a focused initiative to build the business case for a new flexible compact board mill to be associated with the Potlatch Lumber Mill in Bemidji, MN.

Task 9 – Building Leadership Capacity - Ligna

• The NRRI has proposed wood sector leadership training for Kristen Bergstrand (MN-DNR UM forester) and Tamara Lowney (Area Partnership for Economic Expansion (APEX)).

• The training will occur at Ligna – with 1,500 exhibitors from 45 nations, it is the world’s trade fair for forestry and forest products (May 22-26, 2017, Hanover, Germany), where companies from across the globe showcase their latest forest industry products, processes, and innovations

• The primary goal is to discover leading-edge wood products technology that can add value, not only to Minnesota’ pine pulpwood logs, but to all of Minnesota’s forest resources.

• We have a developed a funding campaign to help augment the trip expenses.
