OBJECTIVES SME was tasked by the Minnesota Wild, a franchise that joined the NHL in 2000, to create its first ever team mascot. The assignment, which commenced prior to the 2008-2009 NHL season, focused on developing a mascot that supported community and youth-based initiatives. SOLUTION As the two organisations have worked together in the past to develop a logo and team jersey , SME and the Wild leveraged this successful partnership to research, concept, and design the new mascot: “Nordy”. The idea of Nordy was borne out of factors that heed the Minnesota region, culture, and local social demeanors and attitudes. Additionally , feedback from Wild fans played an integral role in the process. RESULTS Nordy enjoyed a successful first season in The State of Hockey , including appearances at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, a primary benefactor of the Wild’s community giving efforts. Nordy was also involved in Wild About Reading, youth hockey fund raisers, Kids Club events, Season Ticket Holder events and local non-prot charity events.
