ANNUAL REPORT

32009 started off as a year of uncertainty for Miriam’s Kitchen. A financial collapse that was second only to the Great

Depression caused great anxiety about how we would

find the resources to meet the current and growing needs

of our homeless guests. This anxiety was tempered

however by a historic presidential election and faith

that the generous community we live in would respond

to these challenges. Whether luck or providence, the

new federal administration, unprecedented generosity,

and unforeseen opportunities turned what could have

been a very dark year into one of growth, vibrance, and

optimisim at Miriam’s Kitchen.

2MK 2010, our five-year strategic plan, recognizes the increasing

numbers and complex needs of the individuals we serve. The

ambitious plan outlines the strategic objectives necessary to

meet these growing demands, and identifies future innovative

opportunities to serve DC’s chronically homeless population.

Implementation of several of these strategic objectives began

in 2006, including planning for a weeknight dinner program

and enhancing our mental health services. Currently, there is

no consistent indoor dinner and case management program in

downtown DC for both homeless men and women. Miriam’s

is filling this void by adding weeknight dinner and case

management services consistent with the quality of our current

programs. The new programming commenced on January 18,

2010 at Western Presbyterian Church.

There were two great challenges faced in implementing

these new services: funding and location. While the former

is an ongoing challenge, we were fortunate to exceed our

2009 fundraising goals despite the poor economy. This gives

us hope that we will be able to meet the ongoing budget

increases associated with our new programming. In 2009, our

organizational budget was $1.3 million. In 2010, the budget

jumps by 33 percent to $1.76 million.

The other challenge was location of the programs. We are

still considering whether a more centrally located, downtown

space would be a more appropriate location for the homeless

men and women we serve. After a two-year search, Miriam’s

located only one potential location downtown, New York Avenue

Presbyterian Church. While we are still considering whether

this is the best location for evening programming, we were

able to implement the program more quickly and much more

cost-effectively than had we waited on the funding for New York

Avenue Presbyterian.

3Open every weekday since October 1983 (in blizzards, heat

waves, protests, and during holidays), Miriam’s Kitchen

is a reliable source for a hot meal and a warm, supportive

environment for men and women who are homeless. The

program is staffed by the Director of Kitchen Operations and

more than 1,000 volunteers annually.

Miriam’s Kitchen uses its nutritious, homemade menu to attract

guests to critical services that focus upon longer-term solutions.

This is especially true for many of our guests who suffer from

mental illness and would be reluctant or unable to reach out

for help regarding drug or alcohol addictions, housing, legal

counseling, medical care, and much more. Once a guest enters

our dining room and sits down for a delicious meal, it is easier

for a Case Manager or volunteer to make contact and begin a

conversation about what he or she needs.

In 2009, the Breakfast Program served 52,356 meals to our

homeless guests. This is a 49 percent increase since 2002, but a

five percent decline from 2008. Possible reasons for the decrease

is the number of guests who have become housed and do not

come to Miriam’s as regularly for the morning meal, the closure

of Franklin Shelter at 13th and K Streets., NW, making it more

difficult for people to be here by 6:30 am, and the decrease in case

management guests who might also access a meal and vice-versa.

4 CASE MANAGEMENTProgram

In its ninth year, our Case Management Program served 2,301

guests! This is a six percent decline over 2008, which we

attribute to more of our guests being housed and identification

assistance being offered by the District of Columbia for the

first time ever. The program was staffed by our Deputy

Director, Director of Social Services, four Case Managers, and

an Art Therapy Intern. These staff members are present at

every meal as a resource for our guests. The Case Managers

engage clients in meeting various needs such as transportation

to appointments, toiletries, clean clothing, access to mail and

voicemail services, information about services provided by local

social service agencies, and counseling. Through these services,

and by being a constant presence in the dining room, Case

Managers work to build trusting relationships with our guests.

We estimate that nearly three-quarters of our clients sleep on

the street each night and nearly all struggle with mental illness,

addiction, or both; therefore creating a trusting relationship is crucial

to providing our guests with the services they need to survive.

Our Case Management Program continued to focus on other

shorter-term needs experienced by our guests. We helped 1,072

guests obtain identification. At the beginning of the District’s

fiscal year in October, the city started offering vouchers for

free identification for those who are homeless resulting in a

26 percent decline in this category of assistance from 2008.

1,670 times we provided guests with bus tokens and other

transportation to get them to documented job, legal, or medical

appointments. This was a 46 percent increase over 2008. This

increase was due to a change in the Washington Metropolitan

Transit Authorities’ policy, which mandated the use of

SmarTrip cards to receive free ride transfers. Miriam’s Kitchen

began offering the SmartTrip cards to its guests in January.

Beyond these shorter-term needs, we aided 205 of our guests

in obtaining food stamps and other public benefits. Case

Managers moved 13 people into intensive drug and alcohol

rehab programs. We also referred or placed 29 of our guests

in mental health treatment programs. We helped our guests

find employment 99 times and also moved 121 people into

transitional or permanent housing. This was a nine percent

decrease in the number of guests we moved into permanent

housing in 2008. This decrease is mostly due to the slowing

of the District of Columbia’ Permanent Supportive Housing

initiative, which provides free housing and supportive social

services to chronically homeless men and women.

We maintained our partnerships with community providers

in 2009, allowing us to further provide on-site services to our

guests. Unity Health Care provided guests with on-site medical

treatment 653 times. We also continued the podiatry clinic run

by faculty and students at George Washington University’s

Physician Assistant program, providing 65 guests with

services. 274 guests received legal services provided weekly by

Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless.

Mental health treatment is one of the most pressing needs

for our guests. We have a psychiatrist each Monday morning

to provide on-site mental health treatment and to dispense

medications to our guests. In total, 160 treatment sessions were

provided to our guests.

In 2009, 2,301 guests received case management services at Miriam’s Kitchen.

“I’ve seen things you couldn’t even imagine.” Tyler has been homeless and living on the streets of DC for more than half his life. And at just 28 years old, he’s experienced enough trauma to last a lifetime.

He left his native South Carolina at 16 in an effort to get away from it all. He had dropped out of school in the ninth grade, and there wasn’t much left for him at home—not even family. So he and a friend made a beeline for Washington, DC.

But when they arrived in the Nation’s Capital, his friend abandoned him. Tyler was left without money in his wallet, homeless and wandering.

And that’s when he fell into a life of drugs. Tyler spent the next six years high on heroin and powder cocaine.

It wasn’t until his two-year-old son was murdered in 2005 that he got clean.

Nestled in the crook of Tyler’s right arm is a tattoo of his son. Tyler, Jr. is seen kneeling next to his final resting place—a cross that bears his name and date of death, and marking the spot where he is now buried.

Tyler’s been sober for six years now, and trying to put his life back together. He comes to Miriam’s Kitchen a couple of times a week to work on getting his identification cards and his dream of getting his GED.

Tyler states emphatically that he won’t be homeless on his 30th birthday and if he can help it, no one else will be either.

‘I’m starting to see new people come in to Miriam’s Kitchen that are younger than me. If I can help someone, even in my position, I’m going to do it—even if it’s my last dollar.’

He knows a tough road is ahead of him. But, he also knows that there is hope.

‘If I had housing, it would turn my life around. Anytime I come to Miriam’s Kitchen, it’s like my home. But I’ve got to get back on track. Nothing’s going to hold me back now.’

With just two years until his self-imposed deadline to get off the streets, Tyler is looking ahead and moving forward—for the first time in a long time.

6Since 1994, Miriam’s Kitchen has offered therapeutic group

activities. Our daily activities now include art therapy and

creative writing workshops, yoga sessions, knitting and

geography classes, and a homeless advocacy group. An average

of 568 Miriam’s guests per month currently attend. This is a 70

percent increase over 2008. Frequently the guests who attend

are the most vulnerable and frail of our guests. This allows

our Case Management staff and volunteers to develop trusting

relationships with our guests to be able to serve them better.

Miriam’s also was lauded for its program as a nominee for the

2009 Mayor’s Art Awards in February 2009.

We also continued Miriam’s Café on Wednesdays. It is a time

when many of our most vulnerable guests can engage in

therapeutic activities and meet with Case Managers. Through

2009 we have had an average attendance of 100 guests at Café

every Wednesday.

In 2009, we began offering Life Skills classes during Café.

These classes were started in response to the increasing number

of our guests who have moved into permanent housing. Despite

receiving case management services from the District, there

remain gaps in basic life skills instruction such as personal

finance, grocery shopping, and self-care. We presented classes to

an average of 25 guests per month over the last third of 2009.

8In 2003, Miriam’s Kitchen opened a transitional housing

program for four men who were ready to begin the transition

from homelessness to permanent housing. As part of the

MK2010 strategic plan, Miriam’s made several changes to the

structure of the program to help increase positive outcomes.

After much thought and consultation with donors to Arnold’s

Place, it was determined that Arnold’s Place was not adequately

addressing the needs of chronically homeless individuals

transitioning out of homelessness. This became even more

apparent when the District of Columbia government launched

its own housing program in fall 2008.

Early in 2009 Miriam’s Kitchen’s staff and board decided to

close the program and sell Arnold’s Place. The program was

officially closed in June. Residents were transitioned to other

housing and given first- and last-months rent and security

deposit. The house was sold to a private party in November, and

the proceeds from the sale were put back into our programs.

9 VOLUNTEERSupport and Community Involvement

Volunteers continue to be the driving force behind our Meals

Program. Breakfast was prepared using 1,000 volunteers who

donated a total of 12,350 hours of volunteer time, nearly the

equivalent of having six full-time staff members. This included

45 volunteer groups who came from faith groups, corporations,

and other community organizations.

In addition to preparing and serving breakfast, volunteers also

helped with cleaning, painting, organizing, maintaining our

database, sending newsletters, making new bulletin boards, and

running After-Breakfast groups. In June 2009, we held our

eighth annual Volunteer Appreciation barbecue. In attendance

were 100 Miriam’s Kitchen volunteers. We were happy to have

a chance to thank our volunteers for all of the ways that they

have helped us over the years. Miriam’s Kitchen simply would

not be possible without them. At the barbecue we recognized

the following individuals as our Volunteers of the Year: Marc

Adams, Case Management; Charles Hagwood and Mike Hirsch,

Meals; Bob Blair, Miriam’s Studio; and Dale Kasab, Miriam’s Café.

Volunteers also provided substantial support for all of our

fundraising events— happy hours, 100 Bowls of Compassion,

and the Help the Homeless Walkathon. Volunteer contributions

to these events helped maintain low over-head costs. This is

particularly true of 100 Bowls where, among many other tasks,

volunteers prepared and served a fabulous menu under the

direction of Chef Steve Badt.

10Miriam’s Kitchen had its best year in terms of community

recognition of our work since 2001 when we received the

The Washington Post’s Award for Excellence in Nonprofit

Management. We were recognized as a “Best Place to Work in

Greater Washington” by the Washington Business Journal and

also the “Best Place to Volunteer in DC” by the Washington

City Paper. Additionally, we were a runner up for the Mayor’s

Annual Art Awards for “Innovation in the Arts”.

In addition to these accolades, we were also graced with a visit

from First Lady Michelle Obama on March 5. The honor of her

visit and the publicity surrounding it were astounding. What is

equally astounding is her continued support for Miriam’s. The

White House garden provided donated produce to Miriam’s

throughout the fall. The garden received press throughout the

year, often with a mention of Miriam’s Kitchen.

We also received recognition for our innovative usage of social

media technologies such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

funds to expand our programs in 2009. Miriam’s Kitchen is nearly 100 percent privately funded, and we are very grateful to all of

our supporters for their extraordinary support in 2009. Below is a snapshot of our 2009 revenue and expenses.

FUNDRAISING

Miriam’s maintained two major fundraising events to support

our programs. The eighth annual 100 Bowls of Compassion

was extraordinarily successful. Run entirely by Miriam’s staff,

Board, and volunteers, the event took place on May 14 at the

National Building Museum. We auctioned dozens of exquisite

donated pottery pieces and other items, raising $300,000. The

event also allowed us to maintain and expand our corporate

donor base. We also participated in the Fannie Mae Help the

Homeless Walkathon with more than 500 Miriam’s supporters

walking and $180,000 raised.
