PAGE 2 REFLECTION OF THE WEEK November 17, 2019 • 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

REFLEXION de la SEMANA 17 de noviembre 2019 • 33° domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Gospel Summary • It is clear from this passage in Luke’s Gospel that when the world ends, some terrifying events will occur. The clear message, however, is that we should not face these events with apprehension, but rather with trust — trust that God wants us to have everlasting life with him. Instead of being afraid, we are called to find strength and courage in God’s love and persevere in our faith.Refl ection for Families • Today’s Gospel makes it clear that we should persevere in our faith and be faithful disciples. We are most responsible for evangelizing our own children. There is an expression, “Faith is caught, not taught.” How do our children see us live out our faith? How do we witness the greatness of God’s love and our personal response to that love? Share with your child(ren) what it means for you to walk with Jesus.Bringing the Gospel into Your Family • Find a copy of Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco at the library or Owl Babies by Martin Waddell. Read the book as a family and talk about who was there when someone was afraid. Ask one another who helps us when we’re afraid? The answers may be predictable or you might be surprised. In either case, it’s good to remind one another that Jesus is always with us . . . especially when we are afraid.Discussion StartersOnce I was really afraid, but I found comfort when . . .The most challenging part of my witnessing for Jesus was when . . .My faith is strongest when . . .Questions of the Week

Adults: When bad things happen, how do you deal with them?Children: Have you ever worried about something that might happen? What can help you worry less?

Refl ection and questions from RCL Benziger. http://rclblectionary.com

We have a “Special” one time 2nd Collection

this weekendThe Annual Social Justice Second Collection will be held at all the Masses the weekend of November16-17. This collection always seeks to provide resources to those local organizations which help the most needy in our community. This year it will provide funds for the Hope in Home – Rental or Utility Assistance Program.Hope in Home is a seasonal (October to December) program that provides rental or utility assistance to families and/or individuals who need support to pay rent or utility bills. Assistance is one-time only. It is administered by our own Catholic Charities for families in our county. Our parish has always responded most generously to our Social Justice Collection. Your generous response to this year’s collection will provide hope and help to our brothers and sisters in our own community.

- that we all have - is in creation.”

Words of Wisdom“Let us bring light, blessing and healing to this earth, this world.” - Pope Francis

We can just practice simple acts of kindness to ourselves and to others. At this time of year as we approach Thanksgiving there are so many inspiring words of wisdom to remind us how very blessed we all are. We are preparing for the Advent season and as always there will be a festive atmosphere as we welcome visitors from all parts of the world. We enjoy sharing their stories and fellowship. It is the best part of what we do.

May you enjoy many blessings as you surround yourself in celebration with your friends and

family. We wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving. The Gift Shop will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving. We welcome you to visit us on the week-

end of November 30 when we will be open from 9-4 pm.

composter received from San Luis Garbage and then sprinkle a thin layer of soil over the top. Add more organic matter the next day and more soil. When the container is full set it aside and start another. Stir your compost daily, moisten if becoming dried out. At the end of 3 weeks you should be able to use your compost in the garden. What does it mean to love our neighbors in the midst of such a divisive climate? Catholics are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with anger and harsh language, often directed at people themselves. As Catholics, we must model a better way. We invite you to model love for neighbor by pledging to Civilize It and committing to civility, clarity, and compassion this election year. Civilize It: Dignity Beyond the Debate is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even those with whom we disagree, and to put faith in action. Make room in your heart for those with whom you disagree and pledge dignity beyond the debate today at: CivilizeIt.org

Bishop Danny has asked us all to “put our faith into action” toward a more peaceful society. As Catholics, we teach the inherent dignity of

all our sisters and brothers, and recognizing that dignity is the foundation of how we connect with others to build peace.

Planning for a Catholic funeral and burialLife is so full of joy – none of us likes to think much about death. It’s an uncomfortable topic, but it is inevitable.Staff members from Old Mission Catholic Cemetery in San Luis Obispo are available to discuss the spiritual and practical reasons for learning about how to plan a Catholic funeral and burial for yourself and your loved ones. Thses rites are an integral part of the Church and our Catholic community, and burying the dead is one of the Corporal Works of Mercy. If you would like to better understand the importance of a Catholic funeral and burial, the Church’s position on alternatives such as cremation, and other helpful information, call for an appointment at Old Mission Cemetery, (805) 541-0584. Pre-planning and making your wishes known can be a great gift to your family.
