Dear Parish Family,Peace and all good! This weekend we celebrate the final

Sunday of the Churchs liturgical cycle, the Solemnity ofChrist the King. Talk about going out with a bang! Thiswonderful feast represents the recapitulation, the gather-ing together in its entirety the whole story: of Gods crea-tion, of Jesus coming, and of our own individual and col-

lective experience on this earth. Its the celebration of theend of time, of the complete, total, and fulfilled realizationof Christs final and definitive victory. As our Creed in-forms us, He will come in glory to judge the living and thedead.

Indeed, this is one of the most serious of all solemnities, filled as it is with awe and power; glory, majesty and might. You can almost hear the blast of trumpets and the roar of amighty pipe organ somewhere. Its even a bit overwhelm-ing, though, isnt it. I find myself saying, Yeah, and itsscary, too! Especially the part in Matthews Gospel todayabout the final judgment, the separation of the sheep andthe goats. I know what group I want to be assigned to:Baa! Just be sure to point me in the right direction, thatsall I ask.

But Jesus did no come to scare, intimidate, or traumatizeus. He came to love us, to save us, and to invite us to live inHis Love forever. The final coming of Christ in glory is theday we ought look forward to as Christians, not one thatwe should dread. But lets be honest; some of us havebeen taught to fear this event. As one of my grade schoolteachers ruefully proclaimed; Just remember this. Whenthe final judgment comes, you will have to stand beforeGod as He reveals every single one of your sinsright infront of your family, friends, and everyone who ever lived!Imagine the humiliation, the shame, the horror of that mo-ment. Its absolutely no comfort to consider that every

other single human being just might be in the same boat onthat unlucky day.

But, no, wait a minute! Were supposed to celebrateChrist the King as the day weve all been waiting for all ofour lives and throughout all of history. In and throughChrist, we celebrate His final victory of love over hatred; ofpeace over violence; of justice over oppression. In otherwords, of life over death, once and for all.

We are not meant to be guilty bystanders on that day. Were supposed to have tickets to front row seats. And theprice of admission is both clear, accessible, and, with Godshelp, affordable. We need only to give some of our breadto the hungry, some of our drink to the thirsty, some of ourshelter to the homeless, some of our time to the lonely, some of our healing to the sick, and some part of our heartsin this life to those who, like us, are longing for love. Whenwe can do our best to do that, then we can come to Godwith confidence and joy. And we will surely share in Hisglory. For this promise and its fulfillment we give Godthanks. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

quiet prayer finishing by 9:00 p.m. If you are a man over

welcome to discern along with us. We meet on the second

Wednesday of every month for two hours. We invite you to

    Youth Ministry

Our Youth Ministry has a new meeting area in the Main

Parish Building, upstairs near the Parish School. The old

Youth Center is in serious state of disrepair and it was neces-

sary to move out until the building is restored. The Youth

Leadership Council met Saturday 19th November at 8:30a.m., and we welcomed new members who will serve for a

year. Parish Youth Ministry has been doing a great job help-

ing with the Confirmation Program and mentoring young

people generally in our parish. Thank you for your great

support and please continue to cheer us on as we reach out

to the many young men and women in our sprawling and

diverse parish. We have a small section in this bulletin so go

have a look at what were up to.

    The New Missal

Yes, the prayers sound a little different and it will take

some time to get used to saying, And with yourspiritbutnow we will be saying what our Hispanic, French speaking,

Portuguese and Italian sisters and brothers say at Mass

they say , Y con tu espiritu and E con il tuo spirito etc. So

it looks like we are in step once again as Catholics since the

old days of Latin. Some people are worried that this is a

backward step and that Latin in sneaking back into every-

thing. Not true. The Mass stays the same the structure of

the liturgy is a dialogue and is participative. In the Triden-

tine Mass (Old Latin Mass) before 1965 there was little or no

dialogue between priest and people and no participation in

various ministries except by the ordained, the altar boys and

the choir. The whole Mass was said in Latin and people fol-

lowed along quietly from their prayer books or said the ro-

sary. How things have changed! We now resemble the early

Church of people like St. Augustine (died 430) when there

was great participation and a lot of noise in church. (Remind

you of anywhere?!!) Lay women and men will continue to

exercise ministries during the liturgy alongside the ordained,

and Mass continues to be in the vernacular (English, Spanish,

Chinese, etc) while Latin has an honored place as part of our

heritage. Singing some Latin at Mass reminds us of our

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATIONThe Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated at 9:00 a.m.

patrimony, our heritage, which is precious and belongs to allof us. It is a thread that holds us together as Catholics, andisnt it great when as pilgrims in the Holy Land, or Rome orLourdes, we can join our Catholic sisters and brothers whenthey sing the Gloria or the Agnus Deiat an internationalMass? Isnt it good to know the ancient and beautiful SalveRegina as well as more contemporary songs in honor of theBlessed Mother? It really doesnt have to be either or butboth and. We will all have our likes and dislikes when it

comes to the New Missal, so whats new? If we didnt lovethe Mass we wouldnt care one way or the other. Its okay toget heatup about some changesI do! However, its thesame Mass - Jesus among us in Word and Sacrament, nour-ishing us and sending us forth again to become for otherswhatwe receive ourselves.

Solets plunge in and see how it goes; how the Holy Spiritmay touch us as we pray together!

    Spaghetti Dinner

I have to say that the lasagna deserved First Prize. I washappy to be second with my Fettuccine with Pesto Sauce(homemade). Thanks to the Squires and all who took part

    and theres always next year!

    Brother Kelly Seat

He would have loved it! Fabulous is what he would call it.Brother Kellys Seat is a memorial to friendship, which en-dures forever. He really loved his friends and you loved himback to wellness and happiness. There is no greater lovethan that you lay down your life for your friends, Jesus said.

Have a Fabulous week and peace in your heart.

    YEAR END PLANNING

If you have been reading the business section of either of

our local papers you have no doubt noticed that the year end

tax advice columns are starting to appear. The last quarter

of the year is the time to take the necessary actions to re-

duce that tax liability that looms just around the corner.

Many folks choose charitable giving as the avenue to reduce

those taxes. If this is your plan please do not forget our par-

ish. If you need to make a mandatory IRA withdrawal this

can be done directly to the church and tax can be avoided.

We know that there are many demands on your resources,

and many charitable organizations asking for your gift, just

remember that what you give to your church is used right

here. It may be for food for the needy, education for our

youth, or services to other sectors of our community, but it

    stays here.

If there is a special need that you would like your gift to

address just say so with a note and we will honor your wish.

Thank you for all that you do and all that you give. Our par-

ish is stronger and better able to cope with local needs be-

    cause of your gifts.

    THANKSGIVING equalsGIVING THANKS

We are now at the threshold of the Holiday season. Thiscoming Sunday marks the beginning of Advent, a time ofpreparation and anticipation. As we once again approach

this special time of the year it gives each of us time to pause, time to think, time to truly recognize and note the manyblessings that often may be taken for granted, but encircle

us. Often we become so intent on what we do not have thatwe fail to recognize all that we do; together let us take thatpause and reflect on those treasures in our midst.

Old Mission Montessori School continues to be veryblessed with a growing number of children, parents and ofcourse our community at Mission San Luis Rey Parish! This

Yo me encuentro a mi

mismo. Oh, y temeroso tambin!

traumatizarnos.

to.

to.

bienvenida a miembros nuevos.

As que
