TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 20, 2020Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 20, 2020
IDLENESS IN THE MARKETPLACEReflection on Matthew 20:1-16a
I had to laugh recently at a social media posting advocating that no one really needed to be a billionaire. The poster suggested that as soon as someone makes 999 million dollars, all additional income should be given to education or health care, the person should be given a trophy that says, “I won capitalism,” as well as provided with free tacos every Tuesday for life! There seems to be no end to economic theories these days, debating what is fair and just in the earning, keeping, taxing, sharing of wealth.
Today’s parable is definitely not proposing an economic theory, nor is it suggesting a method for calculating salary and benefit packages. It is, however, presenting us with a certain truth about the economy of God’s grace, which has its own logic quite apart from our human sense of fairness.
What concerns God, the landowner, is not how long we have labored in the vineyard, but rather idleness in the marketplace. That idleness is essentially a blindness, or unrecognition that there is a larger reality than myself, a reality called the Kingdom of God, and that participating in building up this Kingdom is the true purpose and work of my life. Once I am an intentional laborer in this Kingdom / vineyard, all of the concerns of the ego – am I getting what I deserve, how does my status compare with others – fall apart at the sheer ecstasy of joining with the Lord of the vineyard in the labors of love. The work itself is the reward.
The owner of the vineyard is relentless and even shameless in the diversity of ways the calls are sent to people to join in the labor, represented by the many visits at various times of the day to the marketplace, inviting the participation of those who still do not comprehend that there is a harvest to be made for God. If you have been working in the vineyard for the whole day, rejoice that the latecomers also have a full share in the great work of God’s love!
~ Fr. Jay
Feast Day: September 21 Patron of Money Managers
As a Roman tax collector, Matthew was considered to be a traitor by those he collected money from. For this reason, friends and followers of Jesus were shocked to see him associate with Jesus. According to legend, Jesus saw Matthew sitting at the tax office and asked him to follow. Matthew followed, not just in step but also in his way of life. He preached among the Jewish people for well over a decade, and he may have traveled to Ethiopia and farther east. His patronage is associated with accountants, bankers, bookkeepers, financial officers and stockbrokers.
PRAYER TO SAINT MATTHEW
St. Matthew, faithful servant to our Lord, you toiled with coins and worked hard at your profession. Ask the Lord our God to be at my side as I work in the same regard. I pray for good wisdom, good fortune, wise decisions and ethical practice. May I see ways in my profession to make the world better. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.Philip Lief Group, Inc.
