PRESIDENT’S COLUMN »

First, congratulations to Brent Kaniecki, the 100th President of the Missouri Athletic Club. Brent has been a member of the Club since he moved to St. Louis in 1997. Since then, the MAC has been a staple for him in his professional and social life. He has been involved with numerous committees in many different aspects of the Club. His leadership and dedication to the Club, along with the other four newly elected officers, will further its prosperity in the coming the year. Looking back at February, I hope you were able to attend the Foundations’ Gala because it truly was the party of the year. The Art Lounge and the Missouri Room had their finest setups. The food stations looked almost too good to eat, and were absolutely delicious. There was an air of camaraderie as everyone rallied together in support of our Club and our Foundations during the silent and live auctions. While the numbers were still being finalized when the magazine went to print, the Gala raised close to $70,000 for the Foundations! Erica and I had a great time celebrating Valentine’s Day, and we enjoyed spending the evening with many of our closest friends. We got in one last laugh at my Most Interesting Man at the MAC videos. A big thank you to Gala Chairman Troy Robertson, his Board of Directors class and, of course, the MAC staff. They all came together to pull off an awesome event. Thanks also to all the donors, sponsors and those who attended the event to make it a success. We wrapped up the month with Good Fellowship Day on Feb. 21 and the annual Boxing Championships on Feb. 26, which utilized our Sports Foundation to support The BackStoppers. As a special treat at this year’s event, three of the exciting bouts were fought by participants from the Guns ‘n Hoses boxing event, which was held at the Scottrade Center on Jan. 31. Also, at this event, the MAC presented a check to The BackStoppers for $2,500.00. Looking forward to some upcoming

spring events, I am happy to report Chris Hyams and his team has put the Father/Son Banquet together again this year. I am especially excited as the speaker will be MAC member, Bob Gassoff. Bob graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with a bachelor’s degree in Russian and Eastern European Studies. During his time there, he played as a defenseman on the hockey team, helping Michigan win the National Championship in 1998. He later went on to play professional hockey with the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks. After Sept. 11, Bob decided to leave his hockey career to join the military as an active duty Navy SEAL officer. He remains an active reserve SEAL with 12 years total service. Professionally, he serves as the director of the wine and spirits division at Lohr Distributing Company, is an owner of the family’s business and he has an MBA from Washington University. Bob serves on the board of directors at The Mission Continues, a non-profit organization supporting returning veterans with a focus on injured and disabled vets. In addition to the Father/Son Banquet, we have festivities planned for St. Patrick’s Day (parade and brunch) and Easter (egg hunt and brunch at both clubhouses) as well as the upcoming Women of Distinction Luncheon and Golf Season Kickoff. Please see the info on all of these events online or in the Cherry Diamond. Moving on to Club finances, the MAC fiscal year continues to be going very well through the first five months. Departmental performance is strong in almost every area with Downtown food and beverage, the hotel rooms, and the tennis program performing exceedingly well. Through the first five months, overall cash flow is 38% better than plan and 59% better than last year. Congrats to everyone involved in making the year extremely successful through almost half of the fiscal year. Lastly, thanks to all of our members who help make this such a great place. The financial performance shows that our membership is using and enjoying the Club in a big way. Membership engagement is great to see, and I say thank you for your patronage of the MAC. I look forward to seeing you around the Club!

The Missouri Athletic Club Nominat-ing Committee is currently seeking ten qualified candidates to run for the 2015 Board of Governors. After receiving all applications, the Nominat-ing Committee will narrow the field of candidates down to ten. GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN »

I’d like to express my gratitude to all of our members and our staff who worked together to truly make the Foundations’ Gala the party of year. Thank you for your planning, creativity, and for an absolutely incredible evening. We promoted that party for months, and I believe it was everything that everyone anticipated and more. We would also like to thank the almost 300 members and guests who came out and enjoyed the evening. Everyone loved the event and so did our fantastic staff that worked it. Our staff, in my humble opinion, is one of the primary factors that make us a Platinum Club of America. Great clubs have great staffs, and in celebra-tion of them, on Thursday, March 12, I have the pleasure of attending our 24th Annual Employee Service Awards Dinner along with our Board of Governors. At this very special dinner, the MAC extends its appreciation to our staff for their outstanding service, loyalty, and longevity. Employees are honored for their perfect attendance, achieving the Twenty-Five Year Club, all of our 2014 Distinguished Employ-ees are there along with those who have reached five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five and thirty years of service in 2014. Another highlight is seeing our retirees; many return and reconnect on this wonderful evening. One of the things I enjoy most about the Service Awards is the reaction of our Governors who attend for the first time. They’re often amazed by the camaraderie of our staff. They enjoy the stories and laughter, and they are left with a new appreciation of our staff’s

dedication and love for the Club. The evening is electric, and I get to stand up and brag on everyone, which is so much fun; I can’t wait. Speaking of bragging, I need to give a shout out to our Bylaw Committee and all the sub-groups who have been combing through our official papers for the last couple of years. They are taking a document that has been in existence for 100 years (and amended many times) and updating, condensing and tweaking the entire body to bring it into the year 2015 so it reflects current times and best practices. Refreshing and aligning our governing documents has been a major undertaking, which will be shared with all in conjunction with our annual meeting in May. I can assure you that this project has not been as fun as the Employee Service Awards or the Gala, but it is very important so my thanks to all who have labored through this huge undertaking. Another major undertaking has been working with our Planning Committee and a task group specif-ically assigned to consider our West Clubhouse’s needs in the next 5, 10 and 20 years to support current and future member interests, activities, and families. To date, some really smart people have accomplished great work, and we look forward to sharing some

of those thoughts and plans as they develop. A glimpse of a possible phase one project was leaked out at the Gala, and the overwhelming excitement and support were immediately clear to all. Much more to come on this one so stay tuned as we go. As I type this column, Good Fellowship Day has just wrapped up at our Downtown Clubhouse. I enjoyed spending the day with several hundred of our members who attended this annual tradition. I talked with just about everyone, and the spirit and vibe of the MAC is incredible. New members, old members, new staff and old staff all laughing, telling stories, competing in various events, and in general, just enjoying being at the Club. It’s a special place, and I’m honored to walk into work every day and think yes, I do have a very cool job for which I’m so thankful. It’s obvious that the MAC is full of people that live life with an “attitude of gratitude.” It shows and it’s contagious. Cheers! See you at the Club,

2013 Sonoma County Chardonnay | Lioco WineAroma: Crushed chalk, lemon oil, kaffir limeFlavor: Candied lemon rind, ruby-red grapefruit, tomato leafFood Pairings: Ginger chicken, shrimp & grits, stonecrab clawsAt a Glance: Showcased by the glass at many destination restaurants, both at home and abroad, this wine is a bridge between the leaner California Chardonnays of the ‘70’s and those being made today.

2012 “Indica” Mendocino County, Carignan | Lioco WineAroma: Sour black plum, red licorice, lavenderFlavor: Fresh blackberry, salted plums, orange pekoe teaFood Pairings: Cracker crust pizzas, carnitas, banh miAt a Glance: This is an old-timey, “heritage-wine” that harkens back to pre-prohibition days. Featuring a nearly extinct (in California), yet once prolific grape called Carignan, it hits similar notes as the classic bistro wines of Europe such as Beaujolais, Cotes du Rhone, and Dolcetto. Welcomes a slight chill.

Weight Loss Standings After Three Weeks of CompetitionThe MAC Weight Loss Competition is under-way! Between both clubhouses, 25 members are competing in the program by working out regularly and participating in health assess-ments, nutrition counseling, and regular weigh-ins. At the time of publication, partici-pants are halfway through the competition. The winner will be the person with the greatest percentage of weight loss when the competition ends on March 20. Below are the standings for the top ten participants as of the Feb. 1 weigh-in. The competition began on January 12. The final results will be published in the May issue of the Cherry Diamond.

Reap More Benefits from Stretching: Schedule a Stretching SessionStretching should be part of everyone’s daily routine. Most people know that stretching increases flexibility, but it also increases range of motion, circulation, can reduce stress and help alleviate pain. Proper stretching is so important that the personal trainers at the MAC offer 20 min-ute stretching sessions to members. Assisted stretching with a personal trainer provides a deeper stretch to a greater number of muscles than self-stretching. On Friday, January 23 at the Elvis Tribute Event the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children presented the three benefiting charities from the previous year with checks for $9,159.78 each. The three charities were the Assistance League of St. Louis,

Kids in the Middle, and Missouri KIDS. Additionally, the Elvis impersonator was a hit and many enjoyed dancing to his songs. Charlie Hyams, son of Governor Chris Hyams, ventured up on stage and sang “Suspicious Minds” with Elvis.

Here’s what others had to say about the event :

The King Sings for Local Children’s Charities

On behalf of Kids In The Middle, I want to thank the MAC for the generous donation that was presented to us. Because of the generosity of your members, Kids In The Middle will be able to help an additional 126 children get started in group counseling. The children are truly “in the middle” of their parent’s divorce and the counseling that we provide to them gives them the skills to cope with it. This support really does impact the number of children we can help. Also, we enjoyed the evening with Elvis. It was a great opportunity for us to show a few of our new board members what Kids In The Middle is involved in. What a great way to celebrate St. Louis charities helping St. Louis kids.

– Meredith Friedman, Chief Executive Officer

It was a great night for the charities, guests and the MAC members who attended. We even had couples wandering up from the Jack Buck Grille for the last hour of the Elvis show and before you knew it they were dancing too. The members who didn’t make it to this event missed out on one of the best MAC events of the year.

– John Breck

On behalf of Assistance League of St. Louis, thank you for the contribution for our philanthropic programs on Friday evening. The event was fun and enjoyable. Plus, it was good to meet and speak with other organizations participating in the event. I have placed the large check you presented to Assistance League at our Ellisville headquarter offices so our members are able to learn the generosity of MAC Charitable Society for Children.

– Marilyn Panter, President

Thank you so much for the wonderful contribution from the MAC to Assistance League of St. Louis. The donation was more than we had hoped for. That amount will buy clothing for more than 90 children. In addition to being one of the recipients, our group loved the dinner, music and dancing! We really appreciate the support and opportunity you have created for us.

Coat-A-Kid provides new coats, hats and gloves, free of charge, to kids in the St. Louis area with the only stipulation being that of true need. What began as a child’s single act of compassion has grown into a citywide initiative to keep children warm. According to Coat-A-Kid’s website, the organization began when a third grader reported to her mom that a girl in her class did not have a coat to wear out on the playground on a cold November day, and she said, “Mom, she needed a coat!” A coat, hat and gloves were purchased and given to the school counselor to give to the student in need of the items. It was then discovered that there are hundreds of children in all areas of St. Louis who do not have warm winter coats to wear.

FACTS ABOUT COAT-A-KID:F Coat-A-Kid, Inc. was established in 2001 by the Beckman Family.F It is an all-volunteer agency.F About 4,000 coats are provided to St. Louis Public Schools and the Head Start Program every year.F 3,755 coats were distributed during the 2014-2015 season. F Since 2001, more than 18,000 kids have received coats from Coat-A-Kid. F Coat-A-Kid’s staff serves children in several school districts in St. Louis city and county, foster care programs, and YWCA and Urban League Head Start programs.F Social workers determine a child’s need for a coat.F Volunteers personally fit each child for a coat.F ColorArt generously donated a warehouse to Coat-A-Kid at 1325 N. F Coats are purchased from Operation Warm, Burlington Coat Initiative, Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Sears, and Old Navy.

2015 Charitable Society for Children CharitiesThroughout the year, the Cherry Diamond will profile each of the 2015 benefiting charities of the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children. The three charities are Coat-A-Kid, The Maren Fund, and Sweet Babies. This month highlights Coat-A-Kid.

What C oat-A-Kid had to say about the Elvis Tribute Event :

For more information, visit coatakid.org or email [email protected].

I had a lovely time last night. There is no ballroom in St Louis like the one at the MAC. The food was delicious and the entertainment so lively. Coat-A-Kid is very honored and extremely grateful to be one of the charities for this year. We are so appreciative for whatever we receive, and the money will directly be used for purchasing new coats, hat, and gloves. Thank you; I am honored to be in the company of such wonderful people in our community. Thank you for all you do to help all of us and all the children we serve.

– Lisa ArendsExecutive Director of Coat-A-Kid

Last night was lovely, and we at Coat-A-Kid are honored to be a 2015 MAC CSC charity. If we are lucky enough to get a check for $9,000 next year that would mean we would be able keep 360 children warm on their way to and from school with new coats, hats and gloves!

The Event of the Year! The Foundations’ Gala on Friday, Feb. 13 was a raving success. Members praised the décor and atmosphere, the extravagant food stations, the band and entertainment, and of course, the opportunity to interact with each other and the staff. Members also took home some prized auction items. Past Governor David Weiss was the lucky winner of the sold out Golden Ticket Raffle. He won a trip to Napa Valley, California. Another sought after item was the Sand Hills golf outing. Two groups battled back and forth, and it was eventually purchased for $7,700.

Here’s what attendees had to say about the event:

“The MAC staff planned and executed an absolutely astonishing party for the Foundations Gala! From the creative decorations to the innovative menu and inspired food displays to the graciousness of every single staff member, each detail was platinum plus. What wonderful imagination and teamwork it must have taken to execute such a great event! Great job Katie Maurer and team! The bonus was that every staff member I encountered seemed to be enjoying the festivities as much as the members. It was great to see and talk with the chefs while they showed their skills at the various food stations. We don’t often get to interact with them because they are always so busy in their kitchens. I was pleased to see key food service and catering staff leaders looking calm as the staff performed so brilliantly. Clearly, they had prepared their teams to deliver the ultimate in product and service. Quite simply, major congratulations to every single staff member! What a showcase for their talents!”

– Past Governor Judith Hanses “The Foundations Gala exceeded my every expectation. I would like to extend a full thanks and congratulations on a brilliantly run event to all the MAC staff involved (just about everyone, I imagine). It was an incredible party; lots of mingling and wonderful conversations. The photo booth at the head of the stairs was a brilliant idea, giving us a chance to be silly with lots of folks throughout the night. With all our chefs on hand, the food stations were marvelous! From Bart’s New Orleans to Grant’s France everything was beautifully prepared and the buffet service got everyone through without serious delay. The band at evening’s end got people on the dance floor, and what more could you want? It was a great night all around. To steal a cliché from every high school prom article you ever read, “a good time was had by all.” Congratulations to all, and thank you.”

– Governor John Salter

Missouri Athletic Club basketball Hall of Famer Charlie Wittenberg recently returned to his alma mater to cele-brate his Notre Dame teammate Tom Hawkins entering the school’s Ring of Honor. The ceremony took place at halftime of the Notre Dame vs. Miami basketball game. Wittenberg and his old teammates saw the Fighting Irish pull out a comeback victory. Wittenberg and MAC Past President Hank Luepke played with Hawkins in the 1950s. Hawkins is still the leading rebounder in Notre Dame history and went on to enjoy a 10-year NBA career with the Lakers. He was the first black

basketball player to earn All-America accolades at Notre Dame. “Tom faced some discrimination during that time when we went on the road,” said Wittenberg. “He was not allowed to enter a movie theater in Chicago and he was not allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl Tournament. Our team refused to play in that tour-nament. We had a very close-knit team that stuck together. I’m proud of my alma mater. At my stage of life, return-ing to Notre Dame was a reminder of how truly blessed I have been to have gone to a great university and for the friendships I developed.”

Just mentioning the name “board retreat” or “staff retreat” can sometime put both board and staff members in an uncomfortable mood. The notion alone of opening “Pandora’s box” and laying issues out on the table with plans of honest feedback can be unnerving and provoke a feeling of uneasiness. The first step when decid-ing whether to convene is to be sure all key players are identified and the team is in a position to have open and honest dialogue. This step is critical in ensuring that everyone is not only on the same page, but willing to open up to meaningful and purposeful discus-

sion. If you can honestly answer ‘yes’ to your team’s cohesiveness, then you are one step closer to the next step: identifying key issues to be examined. If you’re beyond these steps and host retreats annually to keep your ship sailing in the right direction, consider hosting your retreat on the sixth floor of the Missouri Athletic Club. Let the MAC start the process for you by offering our board room(s), catering services, and/or overnight rooms. The Missouri Athletic Club shined bright once again for Saint Louis Priory School’s annual Father Son Banquet on Jan. 24. More than 400 fathers and sons gathered in the Priory red and bluefestooned Missouri Room for an extraordinary night of fun, food, and fellowship keynoted by former Navy SEAL, Rhodes Scholar, best selling author, and native St. Louisan Eric Greitens. Mr. Greitens spoke inspiringly on the importance of purpose and service in all walks of life and more than 200 signed copies of The Warriors Heart, an adap-

tation for teens of his New York Times best seller, The Heart and The Fist, were provided by Priory’s Fathers’ Club to their sons. Many in attendance proclaimed the event the best Fathers’ Club banquet yet and Saint Louis Priory School looks forward to returning to the MAC again in 2016! In October, Saint Louis Priory School recognized alumnus and Missouri Athletic Club member, James Bommarito, during the homecoming half time program for his accomplishments and honors as an All State Football, All Metro Basketball, and All Metro Base-ball athlete. He is the only Priory student to ever receive all three of these high honors, and one of few Missouri students to be recognized for all three sports. This honor was bestowed on him around the thirtieth anniversary of his gradua-tion. In 2015, the school’s basket-ball court will be renovated, and a plaque will be displayed in Bom-marito’s honor. “This recognition is a nice honor for my family and the Priory class of ’84. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to play with a lot of great players such as fellow MAC member Judge Gary Gaertner and to learn from great coaches such as Marty Macabe and Pete Buha,” said Bommarito.

Safety First at the MACFor the last 12 years of his 21-year career with the Missouri Athletic Club, Fred Nelson has worked in security for the Club. He is supported by Greg Thompson who has a background in security from Brink’s and Danny Slay who recently joined the staff after retiring as a police detective. The three of them monitor both clubhouses 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the security desk at the Downtown Clubhouse, which offers surveillance from more than 60 cameras. Additionally, they routinely walk the parking lots and garage to check for anything suspicious, and someone is always available to walk a member or staff person to their car, if they feel uncomfortable going alone for any reason. The newest enhancement Downtown is a face recognition, buzz-in lock system for the front and back entrances provided by Hackett Security. When someone tries to use the doors during off-hours, the security team is able to see them through the video monitor before unlocking the doors for their entrance. This feature will be added to the valet area in the near future. On weekends, the Club adds extra security staff when large events are taking place. As head of security for the MAC, Fred takes pride in the safety of the Club and wants members and staff to feel secure and comfortable at all times. “I’ve been here for 21 years; this is a great place to be, and I want all of our members to always feel like we’ve got their back,” said Fred.

When looking for a venue to celebrate George Pace’s twelfth birthday, he and his parents wanted a place that offered a va-riety of athletic opportunities for a group of six boys to play. They chose the Missouri Athletic Club. The boys played bas-ketball, golf, swam, and then took the shuttle to the St. Louis Blues game. Upon returning to the Club, they played paddle on the roof and then billiards before calling it a night in a family suite, which sleeps six. Each boy also received a MAC t-shirt as a party favor. The next morning the boys enjoyed

breakfast at the Club before returning home. “The boys loved it! They had a blast, and the staff was great, very welcoming to them. It was the ideal environment for the boys to have a day of sports, and it gave them an opportunity to really enjoy the Downtown Clubhouse,” said George’s father, Mr. George Pace. Birthday Celebration AT THE MAC

In mid-January, longtime members Jay Blanke, Barry Pannet, Jack Herman and Art Hollenbach were playing their usual racquetball game when Jay bumped into the sidewall going for a shot, fell backwards and bumped his head. Jay was knocked out for a minute and his buddies were concerned and placed a call to 911. Shortly thereafter, Jay came to and his buddies spoke to him about what happened and their concern for him. The guys told Jay an ambulance was on the way. “Well, that’s probably a good idea,” said Jay, “but let’s at least finish the game before the ambulance comes.” The good news is Jay was spotted on the fifth floor a week later and he looked no worse for the wear.
