      Mitchell and Surrounds   

Mitchell and Surrounds Equine Landcare Group was formed in June 2012. Our Members are horse owners from across Mitchell Shire and the surrounding region, from Macedon to Mansfield! We come from all sections of the farming and non­farming community alike, own one horse or many, beginners and professionals ­ all are welcome.  The Group aims to improve knowledge and understanding of land management to maximise the health, performance and welfare of horses whilst enhancing the environment. Landcare events are a great fun way to networks with your local community. with Mitchell and Surrounds Equine Landcare Group you will meet other passionate horse owners with similar land management and environmental interests.  Landcare has been around for a long time but our Group aims to promote to and assist landowners specifically with sustainable horse keeping and land management practices.   We aim to promote whole farm planning, Equicentral design, grazing management systems, soil conservation and increase the number of  horse property owners who benefit from these concepts.  Managing land well can increase pasture production and quality and decrease  the land degradation and weeds often associated with horse properties.  

Equine Landcare Group:   These land management systems lead to happier,  healthier horses kept in a way that suits their herd instincts and minimises injuries.  Sustainable land and water management on your property can: 

● Reduce numbers of pest plants and animals 

● Improve water quality ● Improve soil health ● Protect and enhance the natural 

environment and biodiversity ● Help protect land from soil erosion and 

salinity ● Address animal health issues such as 

laminitis ● Increase pasture quality and growth which 

will reduce your fed bill.  Landcare presents a great opportunity to meet and 

socialise with interesting people who are passionate about their horses. Learn about sustainable land management, the latest 

technologies in prompting horse health and performance, grant opportunities for on ground 

works and work together to address environmental 

issues  

    You can be part of this dynamic Group ­  New Members are always welcome.  Our Workshops:  We run a minimum of four Workshops each Year, providing information to horse and landowners. Our guest speakers are all experts in their fields  Topics have included 

● Integrated pest management including parasite control in horses 

●  Native pasture identification ● Horse property design ● Soil testing ● Biodiverse pasture for horse health ● Managing the horse property through 

bushfire ● Direct drill seeding for shelter belts
