Johnson Engineering’s GIS team has developed Mobile Mapping applications for iPhone and iPad devices, as
well as for some Android and Blackberry mobile devices. These applications allow you to access and view
your project specific data layers on your mobile device, and see your current position relative to those layers
with an aerial background using your device’s GPS location information. Mobile maps are also viewable using
standard desktop web browsers. Data layers vary from point based features to linear or polygon features. Our
team currently employs this technology to assist field operations for environmental/species mapping, well

Lykes Bros Glades and Highlands County FloridaOne of Florida’s premier ranch operations, Lykes Bros covers some 337,000 acres in Glades and Highlands Counties, one of the largest operations in the state. Their activities include cattle, forestry, landscape materials, sugar cane and bioenergy crops. An agricultural leader, Lykes staff utilizes mobile mapping to efficiently access their various facilities while on the move.
Collier County StormwaterStormwater Facilities for Major Roadways In 2008, Johnson Engineering began a GIS inventory of the stormwater facilities constructed in association with major roadway construction to assist county staff in meeting NPDES requirements. County staff can answer questions and better direct operations related to the structures spread over the entire county by utilizing the mobile mapping components on staff iPhones and iPads.

Lee County Topographic LIDAR and Conventional Elevation DataJohnson Engineering staff has created a mobile mapping site for internal staff use that integrates various publically owned topographic datasets. With either an iPhone or IPad, staff engineers can visit project sites throughout the county and reference topographic information at their current location by utilizing the GPS functions of those devices. They can then make decisions about stormwater runoff or project drainage and proposed fill questions.
Babcock RanchMonitoring, Planning & Permit Compliance Babcock Ranch Community and the Babcock Ranch Preserve are developing into a tremendous asset to the south Florida region. Johnson Engineering staff utilizes a group of mobile maps to assist efficient field data collection and permit compliance efforts both on the privately held lands and on the public owned preserve lands. Well locations, monitoring sites and proposed/existing structures can all be viewed on the mobile maps while on the ranch. The mobile devices show the current GPS position on a current aerial, along with the data layers containing the facilities of interest.
