As an acclaimed cultural institution, the Modlin Center for the Arts believes in supporting a wide range of art, from the traditional to the unconventional; in supporting artists that generate those works in an effort to create immersive and adventurous experiences for audiences; and in providing and encouraging educational experiences for student and public communities.

The 2014-2015 Season provides an eclectic mixture of traditional and cutting-edge works that will promote a range of responses, from thought-provoking discussions to smiling, laughing, and dancing in the aisles. We launch our season on September 7 for

a fun-filled day on the Westhampton Green, with the All Brass Kick-Off Bash, a high-octane, globally inspired brass show featuring Rebirth Brass Band, Red Baraat, Slavic Soul Party and No BS! Brass.

Additional highlights this season include Alonzo King LINES Ballet, MacArthur genius award-winning choreographer Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion, Compagnie Käfig, and a new work from Richmond favorites MOMIX in our Dance Series; Marc Broussard, An Evening with Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer, The Gibson Brothers with Liz Longley, and Kathy Mattea in our Concert Series; and a host of spectacular events in our Jazz Series, Artist Voices Series, Family and Young Audiences Series, and Theatre, Comedy, and Special Event Series. In addition, beginning this season, the Modlin Center will proudly present the Bolshoi Ballet in addition to the National Theatre Live in our Broadcast Series. As always, be sure to explore the outstanding events and exhibits presented by the University of Richmond Departments of Music and Theatre and Dance and the UR Museums.

The Modlin Center ventures downtown for a variety of events this season as well. Modlin Dowtown events include The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China performing Cirque Peking, the Ukrainian subversive folk-punk of DakhaBrakha, Zap Mama and Antibalas, the Perth Theatre Company’s The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer, the Russian National Ballet’s Cinderella, An Evening with Ira Glass, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.

For this year’s University of Richmond Tucker-Boatwright Festival of Literature and Arts, the UR Department of Art and Art History and the University Museums have teamed up to present a series of programs, exhibitions, educational opportunities, and a major, site-specific creative project focused on the topics of landscape and land use. The programs and projects will engage the campus community in examining how landscape and land use have been defined throughout history and how we wrestle with the tensions and conflicts inherent in the topics today. As part of our season, the Modlin Center will presents events focused on this theme including a lecture from the author of The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History and New Yorker writer Elizabeth Kolbert, a lecture and concert with acclaimed singer Kathy Mattea, and many more. These events will be noted throughout the brochure with the logo below.

Finally, we wish to thank all of our Modlin Members for their continued support. Your generous donations make it possible to present these wonderful performances, artists, and educational programs.

Best,

Deborah S. Sommers Executive Director

Westhampton Green (rain or shine) • General Admission $34

Bring your blankets or lawn chairs and join the Modlin Center for the Arts as we kick-off the 2014-2015 season with an explosion of high energy brass band performances on the Westhampton Green (in front of Booker Hall of Music). The festivities will begin at noon and include local area food trucks, beer trucks, and an extraordinary amount of high octane brass.

Richmond’s own No BS! Brass fearlessly combines elements of James Brown, John Coltrane, Michael Jackson, and Led Zeppelin into their fiercely original sound. Trained in the conservatory and hardened in the garage, No BS! makes instant fans wherever they perform.

Slavic Soul Party brings their fiery blend of funk grooves, Balkan brass, Gypsy accordion wizardry, and virtuoso jazz chops to the All Brass! concert. Slavic Soul Party weaves the techno, gospel, funk, dub, jazz, and Latin influences of New York’s neighborhoods seamlessly into a Balkan brass setting that has won devoted fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

Red Baraat returns to the Modlin Center with jazz, go-go, brass, funk, and hip-hop. The incredibly danceable music of this pioneering band from Brooklyn draws people from all backgrounds and ethnicities into an exuberant celebration.

Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. From the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world and being featured on the HBO hit series Treme, they are committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, and extending themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound.

Having shared the stage with Dr. John, Willie Nelson, Gavin DeGraw, and the Dave Matthews Band, Broussard emanates a soulful, youthful, and inventive sound. Take a day out on the bayou with Broussard as he blazes up New Orleans flavor on his guitar, strumming chords of classic, southern melodies with fiery verse.

Two of contemporary music’s most commanding and creative instrumentalists will combine their gifts to offer a thrilling evening of duets. Double bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolinist Chris Thile are both multiple Grammy Award winners and recipients of the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant. They are also virtuoso improvisers and composers, equally fluent playing jazz, Bach, and Americana, as well as writing concerti and bluegrass tunes. Both played with Yo-Yo Ma and fiddler Stuart Duncan on the 2011 Grammy Award-winning The Goat Rodeo Sessions.

“When I hear someone like The Gibson Brothers, I know it’s them from the first note. They have that little thing in their voices that no one else has.” – Del McCoury

The powerhouse harmonies and virtuosic picking combine with a high caliber live performance reflect their dedication to the craft.

Singer-songwriter Liz Longley is best known for her stop-you-in-your-tracks voice, but is quickly gaining recognition for her skills as an accomplished songwriter, crafting intimately personal portraits through her music and winning some of the most prestigious songwriting competitions in the country.

"When I meet someone like Allen Toussaint – that for me is like meeting the equivalent of the Dalai Lama, because he influenced the way I played the piano. He’s a historical part of rock-and-roll.” – Elton John

“Return to the roots of jazz, America's great indigenous art form, and don't miss an opportunity for a performance by the ‘best jazz band in the land.’” – San Francisco Examiner

From the heart of the French Quarter to the world’s stage, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has spread the joyful, timeless spirit of true New Orleans jazz since 1961. This American musical treasure recently released That’s It!, the PHJB’s first album of original material.

Allen Toussaint is part of New Orleans music royalty – a renowned songwriter, producer, arranger, and performer celebrated for his distinctive deft and funky feel on the piano that earned him a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With a poet’s ear for lyrics and songwriting steeped in New Orleans street music, Toussaint’s hit-making R&B songs have been covered by countless artists in an array of style. In 2012, he was recognized by President Obama as a recipient of the National Medal of Arts and Humanities.

Together, these musical titans of New Orleans bring the life and heart of the Big Easy to Richmond for an evening of legendary music-making.

“They make you get up and dance, tap into the good-natured, communal spirit characteristic of salsa at its timeless best.” – Los Angeles Times

The two-time Grammy-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra is one of the most formidable and authentic Latin jazz bands today. The 13 world-class instrumentalists and vocalists of SHO brings music bursting with punching horn lines and spirited vocals straight from the barrio. Their raw, vintage sound is marked by fiery salsa mixed with moments of melodic balladry and represents the authenticity and tradition of Spanish Harlem. Generating a spontaneous, natural energy all their own, SHO doesn’t get any better than when its New York-style, hard-core salsa is heard live.

Known to her fans as Zap Mama, Marie Daulne redefines the term "vocalist." Athletic and powerful on stage, Daulne is a “sonic stylist who alternates between storytelling and creative vocal expression.” She is the sound of urban, afro-scat, and alternative funk. Since bursting on the scene almost 20 years ago, the Belgian-Congolese diva has wowed audiences around the world with her unique sound, which seamlessly blends African, American, and European cultural influences and effortlessly mixes genres such as R&B, hip-hop, and jazz with indigenous and tribal sounds.

Antibalas is Afrobeat’s premier second-wave ensemble and disciples of Fela Kuti, the brilliant big-band leader and Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer. This eleven-member ensemble from Brooklyn deals in the rhythms that define the Afrobeat style, but bring in jazz, funk, dub, improvised music, and traditional drumming from Cuba and West Africa to much acclaim. Through their concerts, tours, and recordings, Antibalas has earned the admiration of a wide array of respected musicians, including everyone from Questlove and David Byrne to members of Fugazi and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. NPR Music’s Bob Boilen writes “If they come to your town, drop what you’re doing and go see them. Wear dancing shoes.”

“This kind of gonzo alchemy comes our way once in a blue moon, which makes it all the sweeter.” – Sam McDonald, dailypress.com

Singer-songwriter Nellie McKay enchants audiences with her musical wanderlust. Her sweet, light voice enraptures as it dances on a vivacious lyrical journey. Her voice is an instrument in its own right, undulating with the staves of Turtle Island Quartet’s melodies to create smooth, and at times gentle, music. Light and airy, the swishing and sliding of sound through the strings of the quartet blend into one philharmonic, nimble as they move between classical quartet to jazz band. This performance by McKay and Turtle Island is an evening spent running through the natural notes of song and string.

“So how do you like your virtuosos: Veteran or wunderkind?...This recital was not a competition, but a glorious collaboration between two like-minded players who share not only blood but also a passion for the intricate interplay that chamber music affords...” – St. Paul Pioneer Press

American pianist Jonathan Biss is widely regarded for his artistry, musical intelligence and deeply felt interpretations, winning international recognition for his orchestral, recital, and chamber music performances and for his award-winning recordings. Miriam Fried has been recognized for many years as one of the world’s preeminent violinists. A consummate musician – equally accomplished as recitalist, concerto soloist or chamber musician – she has been heralded for her “fiery intensity and emotional depth” (Musical America) as well as for her technical mastery.

Mr. Biss has been a member of Chamber Music Society Two at Lincoln Center, is a frequent participant at the Marlboro Music Festival, and often collaborates with such chamber ensembles as the Borromeo Quartet and Mendelssohn Quartet, of which Ms. Fried is a member.

The evening’s program will include Brahms’ Sonata in A Major, Op. 100, Bartók’s Sonata No. 2, and Beethoven’s Sonata in G Major, Op. 96.

With a “rich, natural sound that’s larger and more complex than the sum of its parts, “ (NPR), the four men of New York Polyphony have won hearts and ears as one of the finest vocal chamber ensembles in the world. They “sing with intelligence, subtlety and consummate artistry,” (Richmond Times-Dispatch) applying a distinctly modern touch to repertoire that ranges from austere medieval melodies to cutting-edge contemporary compositions. Their dedication to innovative programming, as well as a focus on rare and rediscovered works, has not only earned New York Polyphony critical acclaim and a devoted following, but also helped to move early music into the classical mainstream.

The evening’s program will include Guerrero’s Regina caeli, and Quae est ista/Surge propera; Byttering’s Nesciens mater; Power’s Beata progenies/Psalm 117; Dunstable’s Speciosa facta es; Pyamour’s Quam pulchra es; Plummer’s Tota pulchra es; Brumel’s Sicut lilium; Clemens’ Ego flos campi/Sub umbra illius; Roll’s There is no Rose and several selections composed for the New York Polyphony.

It's a musical dream team: three-time Grammy-winning instrumental sextet eighth blackbird, and New York-based all-star composer sextet Sleeping Giant. The challenge: create six pieces that together comprise an evening-length work, Hand Eye. Each sextet features a member of eighth blackbird, with one "giant" composing and one "bird" highlighted, creating an evening fizzing with the alchemy of twelve unique personalities. Rule for composers: mold a dramatic arc through the evening. Rule for the ensemble: perform this sextet of bird-songs entirely from memory. You will hear the thrilling result at eighth blackbird's spring concert!

Under the leadership of director and choreographer Mourad Merzouki, Company Käfig / CCN Créteil et Val-De-Marne has become an international phenomenon, touring the world with sold-out performances and rave reviews. Merzouki, himself a major figure on the hip-hop scene for more than two decades, created Correria and Agwa after an inspiring encounter with eleven dancers from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. These young dancers, whose individual stories, passion for dance, and fervent determination resonated with Merzouki, blend the powerful components of samba, hip-hop, and capoeira to create an athletic dance style that is fluid, beautiful, and surprising. Correria plunges us into a frantic, hectic race just like the one that governs our daily lives. Agwa is all about water – the most vital component of the human body, a precious natural resource to be preserved, and a symbol of renewal.

Premiered just months ago at New York Live Arts, the Modlin Center brings new works by celebrated choreographer and 2013 MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham and his company Abraham.In.Motion to Richmond audiences. Vogue describes Abraham’s choreography as having an “avant-garde aesthetic, an original and politically minded downtown sensibility that doesn’t distinguish between genres but freely draws on a vocabulary that is as much Merce and Martha as it is Eadweard Muybridge and Michael Jackson.”

Performed over two nights, The Watershed and When the Wolves Came In pay homage to the 150-year anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 20-year anniversary of the abolishment of apartheid in South Africa. The powerful themes inherent in these historical milestones – in tandem with Abraham’s choreography and music by Max Roach, Robert Glasper, and Otis Redding – connect ideas postured in a cross-cultural exploration of freedom and its progression from the 1960s to present day.

nt live The Modlin Center for the Arts presents, in partnership with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the sixth season of broadcast performances by the National Theatre, London.

National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre with Helen Mirren and has since broadcast more than 20 other productions live from the National Theatre, and on occasion, other theatres in the U.K.

NT Live broadcasts have been experienced by more than 1.5 million people in 500 venues around the world. Past broadcasts include Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller, One Man, Two Guvnors with James Corden, The Last of the Haussmans with Julie Walters, and The Audience starring Helen Mirren.

Though each live broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the “best seat in the house” view of each production.

Additional information can be found at www.nationaltheatre.org.uk

**** “… strong, ferociously smart play..” – The New York Times ***** “…. an evening of ebullient provocation..” – The London Guardian

A spin-off of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, this cutting-edge satire takes a stab at race and landed property in an imaginary Chicago community. The play begins in 1959 as a “negro” family moves into a white neighborhood. In Act Two, circa 2009, we visit the same house as gentrification sets in and the roles are swapped. Have things really changed? Internationally acclaimed, award-winning theatre director Chuck Mike follows up his 2011 production of A Raisin in the Sun by staging Bruce Norris’ superlative sequel on the Modlin stage. Clybourne Park is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award.

REMNANTS is an American hip-hop, coming-of-age musical that tells the story of three life-long friends who graduate from high school at the top of their class. Now celebrities, one of the boys witnesses the brutal murder of a Chinese delivery boy. Outraged, our young hero vows revenge. With original R&B songs, rapping, popping and locking, live deejay, and a full-out block party, our young philosophers contemplate retaliation and reflect, along with a heavy dose of humor, upon the challenges of adolescent boys as they strive for success in an uncertain world.
