OBJECTIVE: SWBATDifferentiate between speed and velocity and

distance and displacement.

Essential Question:How can we describe an object’s motion?

Topic:Linear Motion

“Physics is the natural science that involves the study of matter and its motion through space and time”

–Motion happens all around us:Cars, people, soccer balls, etc.

What is motion?

Motion- change of the position of an object with respect to time

Page 5: Monday, 9/27/15 OBJECTIVE: SWBAT Differentiate between speed and velocity and distance and displacement. Essential Question: How can we describe an object’s

DistanceDistance (d) – how far an object travels.

– Does not depend on direction.• Imagine an ant crawling along a ruler.

• What distance did the ant travel?– d = 3 cm

Page 6: Monday, 9/27/15 OBJECTIVE: SWBAT Differentiate between speed and velocity and distance and displacement. Essential Question: How can we describe an object’s

Distance: EXAMPLE

• Distance does not depend on direction.• Let’s follow the ant again.

• What distance did the ant walk this time?• d = 7 cm

Page 7: Monday, 9/27/15 OBJECTIVE: SWBAT Differentiate between speed and velocity and distance and displacement. Essential Question: How can we describe an object’s

Displacement• Displacement– difference between an object’s

final position and its starting position.– DOES depend on direction.

Displacement = final position – initial position• In order to define displacement, we need directions.

Examples of directions:– + and –– N, S, E, W– Angles

Displacement: EXAMPLE• Let’s revisit our ant, and this time we’ll find his

displacement.

• Distance: 3 cm• Displacement: +3 cm

– The positive gives the ant a direction!

Page 9: Monday, 9/27/15 OBJECTIVE: SWBAT Differentiate between speed and velocity and distance and displacement. Essential Question: How can we describe an object’s

Displacement: EXAMPLE

• Find the distance and displacement of the ant.

• Distance: 7 cm• Displacement: +3 cm

Check for Understanding: Displacement vs. Distance

• An athlete runs around a track that is 100 meters long three times, then stops.– What is the athlete’s distance and displacement?

• Distance = 300 m• Displacement = 0 m• Why?

Page 11: Monday, 9/27/15 OBJECTIVE: SWBAT Differentiate between speed and velocity and distance and displacement. Essential Question: How can we describe an object’s

Speed

• Speed (s) – Rate at which an object is moving.speed = distance

times = d

t• Like distance, speed does not depend on

direction.

Page 12: Monday, 9/27/15 OBJECTIVE: SWBAT Differentiate between speed and velocity and distance and displacement. Essential Question: How can we describe an object’s

Speed- EXAMPLE

• A car drives 100 meters in 5 seconds.

• What is the car’s average speed?– s = d/t– s = (100 m) / (5 s) = 20 m/s

100 m

Check For Understanding: Speed

• A rocket is traveling at 10 km/s. How long does it take the rocket to travel 30 km?

Page 14: Monday, 9/27/15 OBJECTIVE: SWBAT Differentiate between speed and velocity and distance and displacement. Essential Question: How can we describe an object’s

Velocity

• Velocity (v) – speed with direction.velocity = displacement

time

Page 15: Monday, 9/27/15 OBJECTIVE: SWBAT Differentiate between speed and velocity and distance and displacement. Essential Question: How can we describe an object’s

Pulling It All Together

• Back to our ant explorer!

– Distance traveled: 7 cm– Displacement: +3 cm– Average speed: (7 cm) / (5 s) = 1.4 cm/s– Average velocity: (+3 cm) / (5 s) = +0.6 cm/s

The GUESS MethodDuring football practice, Martin and Jesus run 2.7 miles eastward in 25 minutes. How fast were they running?GivenUnknownEquationSubstitute Solve

2.7 miles = d, 25 minutes = t

velocityv = d/t

v = 2.7 miles/25 minutes

v = 0.108 miles/min , Eastward

Work it Out!

• Finish the 5 problems on the back of your C-Notes

• Check your work with your elbow partner

• You MUST use the GUESS method and show all of your work!! (you need to get in this habit)

• Pay attention to the units!!
