GLOBAL CROWD GATHERS FOR JRHA SALE(cont. from p1) "Now the Japan sale is the place to find the fastesthorse in the world," said JRHA international consultantNaohiro Goda in opening remarks. "It can be said the JRHA sale has become one of theworld's best sales," added JRHA Chairman Taro Kono,a longtime member of Japan's House ofRepresentatives. "Japan's economy has beenimproving, so hopefully the sale results tomorrow andthe next day will be strong." Several leading Japanese owners and staunch JRHAbuyers in the past attended the party, including MakotoKaneko, who raced Triple Crown winner and nowleading sire Deep Impact (Jpn) (Sunday Silence);Masahiro and Mizuki Noda; and Hajime Satomi. Theywere joined by a contingent of foreign-based agents, owners and trainers in what has been described aslikely the largest number of non-Japanese professionalsto ever visit the JRHA sale. Some plan just to observeand learn about the Japanese market and bloodstock, but others said they will attempt to make purchases. Australian trainer Gai Waterhouse, who is amongthose on their first JRHA sale foray, chatted andmingled with other partygoers while looking ahead tobidding. "I'm just so happy to be here," Waterhouse said. "Ihope to buy as long as we can make the numberswork." Prices at the JRHA sale are boosted by the highpurses Japanese horses compete for on the JapanRacing Association circuit. The JRHA sale is coming offtwo consecutive record years for gross, and last year'saverage price for 404 horses sold was -31,126,361(about $305,160 based on the exchange rate at thetime). cont. p5

European-based bloodstock agent Mick Flanagan, who worked in Japan while participating in the DarleyFlying Start program, said he had found several horsesduring his inspections of JRHA sale entries that wouldsuit some of his American and European clients. "It just depends on how much they bring," Flanagansaid. "I hope to get to buy something, but if I don't, I'lldefinitely be back next year." On the other side of the sale ring, Runnymede Farmof Paris, Kentucky, will offer a yearling in the openingsession. There are not many foreign-based entities thathave sold horses at the JRHA sale, but Runnymede hasparticipated for years. Runnymede General Manager Romain Malhouitre saidhe felt hopeful about the sale, primarily because thefarm's colt, hip 20, is "a nice horse" with a strongpedigree. The big bay son of Dubai World Cup winnerVictoire Pisa (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}) is out of a half-

sister to prominentJapanese sire KingKamehameha (Jpn)(Kingmambo) and toAmerican Grade Iwinner The Deputy(Ire) (Petardia {GB}),and is being offeredthrough the ShadaiFarm consignment. Among sale visitorswho have traveled toJapan primarily to

observe and learn is Airdrie Stud's Bret Jones, who saidhe was encouraged to make the journey by bloodstockagent John McCormack. Jones spent much of July 12visiting the Yoshida family's Shadai and Northern Farmsand inspecting a number of foals that will be offeredduring the second day of the JRHA sale. "I wanted to learn about the Japanese marketplace,"Jones said. "So far, it has exceeded my expectations.Everybody's been very kind and I couldn't be moreimpressed. We've sold horses to some buyers here inthe past. So I wanted to come over and put a face tothose names, and I want to offer them the same kind ofhospitality they have given me when they come toKentucky.@ "And now I can't wait for my second trip to Japan,"he added. The yearling session begins at 9 p.m. Eastern Sundaynight, and the foal session at the same time Monday.Click here for the catalogue.

I=ll Have Another Producing >Strong= Stock... One of the many intriguing sidelights of this year'sJapan Racing Horse Association select sale will be the offering of two members of the first yearling crop by GIKentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. winner I'll HaveAnother (Flower Alley), who stands at Big Red Farm inthe Shizunai area of Hokkaido. If the looks of the first yearling set to enter the ringare any indication of how I'll Have Another is stampinghis offspring, then the forecast will be good for thenow 6-year-old stallion. Hip 42 is a chestnut colt out of multiple Japanesestakes winner MalteseHeat (Old Trieste),who is from thefamily of Americanchampion sprinter Eillo(Mr. Prospector). Thecolt was bred byNagako Fujita and isconsigned by AmabaReiji Farm. "He is a specialtype," said HirokazuOkada of Big RedFarm of the yearling."But generally, I'll Have Another's offspring are strongphysically." I'll Have Another has been well supported in Japan. This year, in his third season at stud, he covered 128mares, following books of 126 and 152 in 2014 and2013, respectively.

"I'm very happywith his offspring,"Okada said. "It seemsthey will be well suitedto dirt racing, but healso is a good matchfor mares with SundaySilence blood, sohopefully they can runon both turf and dirt." I'll Have Another'sother yearling in theJRHA sale is hip 173,

a dark bay or brown colt out of Special Woman (Jpn)(Special Week {Jpn}), a half-sister to Group 3 winnerTokai Mystery (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) and twoother stakes performers.

In addition to the two yearlings, I'll Have Another isrepresented by a pair of foals in the JRHA sale: hip410, a filly out of Hishi Alcor (Jpn} (Daiwa Major {Jpn}who is from the prolific family of Japanese championsHishi Amazon (Theatrical {Ire}) and Admire Moon (Jpn)(End Sweep); and hip 523, a colt out of Hiraboku Girl(Jpn) (Tanino Gimlet {Jpn}), a half-sister to the dam ofGroup 1 winner Whale Capture (Jpn) (Kurofune). Okada noted that buyers interested in the offspring ofI'll Have Another will have more chances to acquire oneat the Hokkaido Selection Sale on July 21, as 11yearlings by the stallion have been catalogued for thatauction. The offerings include a filly who is out ofAmerican Grade 3 winner Bully Bones (Hesabull) andanother filly out of a daughter of multiple ArgentineGroup 1 winner Guernika (Arg) (Luhuk).

324, c, Midnight Lute--Silver Bullet Moon, by VindicationConsigned by Northern Farm

The full-brother to GI Malibu S. winner and first-year Spendthrift Farmstallion Shakin It Up, this brown colt claims champion Silverbulletday(Silver Deputy) as his second dam. Katsumi Yoshida plucked SilverBullet Moon, with this foal in utero, out of the Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agencyconsignment at last year's Keeneland November sale, paying $1.25million. Foaled on Feb. 11, the colt is big, robust and dark, like his sire, and will enter the ring with a reserve price of ¥50 million (about$410,000).

350, c, Deep Impact (Jpn)--Silverskaya, by Silver HawkConsigned by Northern Farm

Not much more needs to be said about this colt other than he is a half-brother to Australian Group 1 winner and Irish Derby runner-up Seville(Ger) (Galileo {Ire}) and that the family already has worked well inJapan. Silverskaya's Group 2-winning half-sister Daneskaya (GB)(Danehill) produced Group 2 winner Six Sense (Jpn) (Sunday Silence),who placed in both the G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) and G1Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas). Silverskaya, bought by KatsumiYoshida privately, has produced five foals for him to date, including thiscolt's full brothers Oreichalkon (Jpn), a multiple winner, and juvenileSilver State (Jpn). Born Feb. 5, this well-made colt sells with a reserveprice of ¥80 million (about $656,000).

371, f, Deep Impact (Jpn)--Weemissfrankie, by SunriverConsigned by Northern Farm

This filly's full-brother sparked fireworks at last year's JRHA sale whenhaltered as a foal by Ryouichi Ootuka for ¥140 million ($1,372,550). GIDel Mar Debutante and GI Oak Leaf S. winner Weemissfrankie thusreturned dividends to Northern Farm owner Katsumi Yoshida with herfirst foal, and this stylish filly born Feb. 5 is sure to add a bonus to theledger. Her family includes GI Spinaway S. winner Stormy Pick (StormCreek).

384, f, Orfevre (Jpn)--Taiki Clarity (Jpn), by Special Week (Jpn)Consigned by Paca Paca Farm

As a member of the highly anticipated first crop by 2011 JapaneseHorse of the Year and Triple Crown winner Orfevre (Jpn) (Stay Gold{Jpn} and a half-sister to Group 1 winner Clarity Sky (Jpn) (Kurofune),this filly will be sure to get her share of attention. She descends from thedeep American family of sires Known Fact (In Reality) and Tentam(Intentionally) as well as Secrettame (Secretariat), dam of Gone West(Mr. Prospector).

390, c, Deep Impact (Jpn)--Belle Watling (Chi), by Dushyantor Consigned by Northern Farm

Not only did this colt's dam win five Group 1 races in her native Chileand claim a pair of championships, she also walloped colts in the G1Classic El Ensayo and in the G1 Gran Premio Latinoamericano and is afull-sister to another Chilean champion, Scarlet (Chi), and to the Group2-winning dam of another champion, El Tigrito (Chi) (Sir Cat). KatsumiYoshida acquired Belle Watling privately, and this colt is the third foalshe has produced for him following a juvenile filly by Deep Impact (Jpn)and a yearling colt by Daiwa Major (Jpn). He is offered with a reserveprice of ¥80 million (about $656,000).

401, c, Deep Impact (Jpn)--Love and Bubbles, by Loup SauvageConsigned by Paca Paca Farm

As the full-brother to G1 Tokyo Yushun winner Deep Brillante (Jpn),who is represented at the sale by members of his first crop of yearlings, this colt needs little introduction. His full siblings have been selling wellat the JRHA auctions since Deep Brillante--who was secured as a foalhere in 2009 by Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm for ¥31 million($326,315)--scored his Classic victory. In 2012, Australian Paul Fudgepaid ¥145 million ($1,790,124) for a filly foal full-sister that he namedPuppy Love (Jpn), and Yoshiro Kubota paid ¥105 million ($1,029,412)for another filly foal full-sister the following year that has been namedLove and Dragon (Jpn). Sheikh Fahad Al Thani bought another filly foalfull-sister in 2014, paying ¥78 million ($764,706).

417, c, Deep Impact (Jpn)--Sparkle Jewel, by Unbridled's SongConsigned by Chiyoda Farm

This colt, foaled Feb. 27, could appeal to potential American buyers ashis unraced dam is a half-sister to GI Santa Anita Oaks and GI LasVirgenes S. winner Golden Ballet (Moscow Ballet), who produced GIBelmont S. and GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner Drosselmeyer(Distorted Humor) and Grade I-placed Stage Luck (Unbridled's Song). The colt is a half- brother to multiple Japanese winners Clean Ecology(Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) and Mackenzie (Jpn) (Agnes Tachyon{Jpn}).

The first foal produced by an Argentine Group 1 winner and daughterof champion sprinter Wally (Arg) (Southern Halo), this filly made a markas the initial foal to be born at Northern Farm this year, arriving on Jan.6, and she is big and powerful. Emirates Singapore Derby cont. The punters bet Sunday=s Emirates Singapore Derbyas if it was a two-horse race, and so it proved, asArgentinian import Quechua completed a rare double, tacking this 4-year-old feature onto his victory in thevaluable Singapore Gold Cup last November. A Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed in his nativeArgentina, Quechua has been a model of consistency inSingapore and recorded a breakthrough success with adefeat of his stablemate Emperor=s Banquet (Aus) (Holy

Roman Emperor{Ire}) in the 2200-meter Gold Cup, therichest event on thelocal racingcalendar, Nov. 16.More recently, heturned in a bigperformance to justmiss in the QueenElizabeth II Cupover the course and

distance Apr. 26 and was first of the locals home in theG1 Singapore Airlines International Cup May 17,finishing 3 1/4 lengths behind the Hong Kong duo ofDan Excel (Ire) (Shamardal) and Military Attack (Ire)(Oratorio {Ire}). He prepped for the Derby with a runner-up effort to War Affair in the Patron=s Bowl over aninsufficient 1600-meter trip June 21 and was primed forthis test over a more level playing field. Drawn gate 11 in the field of 14, Quechua hit theground running and was a bit wide from fourth early on,but Corey Brown gave his mount a little rein and theduo was up into a stalking second as VRC St Leger heroOrder of the Sun (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) set thepace. Fastnet Dragon got the perfect spot in the boxseat, while War Affair could not get in from the 13 andtraveled three and four wide in the middle stages. Order of the Sun still led narrowly from Quechua, butBrown was still riding full of confidence, pushed thebutton and hit the front 400 meters from home. WarAffair traveled deep on the second turn, but loopedrivals to draw alongside Quechua and the stage was setfor the final furlong. The Horse of the Year may havepoked his head in front with a sixteenth of a mile to run,but Quechua--who covered 11 meters fewer than WarAffair--used that to his best advantage and stuck hishead across the wire first. Fastnet Dragon saved all theground to be in the photo finish. AHe=s been such a good horse to us. He=s won theGold Cup and now the Derby, what more can you ask ofhim,@ said trainer Patick Shaw, who orchestrated thecareer of the legendary Rocket Man (Aus) (Viscount{Aus}) and who was winning his second Derby after[Our] Falstaff (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) in 2006. AThe planwas to go forward today from the wide draw, but I leftit to Corey to decide where he wanted him to be. I waspretty confident he would be right in it coming to thetop of the straight as he=s such a fighter. He dug downreal deep when War Affair got to him, and was just toogood today. Corey also gave him a great ride.@

Quechua will now get a break before being preparedfor a title defense in the Gold Cup Nov. 15. War Affair=s trainer Alwin Tan put the narrow defeatdown to the luck of the draw--or lack thereof. AWe lost because of the wide barrier,@ he said glumly.AHe was caught four to five wide but he still ran verywell.@ War Affair will also be pointed for the Gold Cup asthis budding rivalry continues to grow.
